My sister sucking on a blowpop at Torch Lake, Michigan. This place is just stunning. More Michigan pics to come!

Sometimes I jumble through a stack of negatives and think "Aaaah, yes. There!"...and then I realize that it isn't there at all.

So: this is not Norfolk, as I thought (the white should have given it away), but Normandy. And I had to consult Googlemaps to be sure exactly where.

This is a really long description of the day because we did so much. It's written more as my diary than as a Blip description so feel free to skip it! The short version is we drove across the island to Paleochora today. It was a great day and we did a lot! Finished here with a swim before driving home.

OK, that's the short version - here is the longer one...

The way we drove across Crete it's about 70 km on small winding roads but we looked at so many things on the way over we didn't get to Paleochora until 6 in the evening!

We stopped for supermarket shopping (olives to take back with us), then on to Topolia. Here we saw a bakery and stopped, outside we met an English couple living nearby and chatted for a while. They assured us it was the best bakers in this part of the island and judging by the bread and bits we bought there they could well have been correct.

Just outside the village was a viewpoint into the gorge, which in Topalia was called Topalia Gorge. We may return there tomorrow for a walk! (We did!)

On through a tunnel and shortly after we parked and walked up to the Cave of the Wisdom of God. There are two ways up. The first involves an ascent of many steps, the second is just as you enter Katsomatado and is a much more pleasant walk along a shaded path back to the cave, The cave itself is impressive as a chamber, is also a chapel, and contains a lot of pigeons continually cooing, flapping around, and pooing! I found it a lovely place, quiet and cool, and I can imagine a service here could be very moving.

On from there we took a detour to Millia, apparently an ecological village resurrected from earlier desertion with the help of EU money. It has won a prize for being the best project of its type. Unfortunately once we got there we found zero information on the place so I can’t tell you more about the village or the project! However, the drive there was a truly spectacular 4,5 kms, the last part on a narrow gravel road with fantastic views across the valleys to high mountains.

Once there it was extremely quiet apart from the always present humming of bees and the occasional bleating of a goat. We ate our picnic lunch nearby and then returned to the village for a coffee, which was delicious. The food others were eating looked equally delicious! As we sat there, totally relaxed and contemplative, we realised the afternoon was later than we thought. After a little discussion we decided to carry on with our plan and around 6 o’clock we arrived in Paleochora. The sea was cooling to swim in but warm enough to stay in as long as you wanted. We swam for a while, showered away the salt water on the beach and got dressed. We took a walk across town, paused to eat a huge ice-cream and then set off back home, this time using the main road. Just after dark we got back to the hotel, tired but very satisfied with our day.

Recently, I'm trying to challenge myself (and then because I'm super lazy), by only using 4 sets (the ninja tumbler, and the newsers mixers). I don't really know what I expected out of this build, and don't really know how satisfied I am with it.

Because of excellent connections Jyväskylä was a busy market place even before first permanent settlements were founded in the current city centre. The establishment of Finland’s first three Finnish-speaking schools: the lycée in 1858, the teachers’ college in 1863, and the girls’ school in 1864 proved to be the most important steps from the point of view of the later development of Jyväskylä. Educational services became a heart of the economic growth of the city. In 1912 Wilhelm Schauman founded a plywood mill on the shores of Jyväsjärvi. Soon also other kind of forest based businesses opened factories and premises in the city. Thus, forest, pulp and paper became the second stronghold of the economy in Jyväskylä. Later the high quality education and paper machinery industry tempted information technology businesses to settle in the city.[

After the drama that was last night's photo, I had to be a little silly today.

I'd really like to thank everyone who left a comment or sent a flickrmail (or both) giving me hope and encouragement. It's awesome to know that when times are tough we have such a great group of peeps supporting us here in the Flickrverse isn't it? So again, THANKS YOU WONDERFUL PEOPLE!!!

I love this picture. Because it really shows emotion. It's like she's really showing her struggle. I wrote "Life's a climb, but the view is great". Because for some of you who have seen the Hannah Montana movie, she said that to Lucas Till in the movie. Well actually Lucas Till said it first but then she kept on saying it. And yes life is a climb. (:

I hope you guys like it, if anyone really likes it, you could take it but please just tell me first! And don't credit me if you do not want to. Any comments? xo

"If anyone has children, they better teach their children to follow the traditions that we're leaving behind because it is later than we think with all that's going on." ~ Juanita Centeno, CHUMASH

The habits, attitudes, and beliefs that carry the human through the trials of life are developed at a very young age. If we are taught respect at a very young age, the odds are we'll be respectful throughout our whole lives. If we are taught to dance at a young age, we'll dance our whole lives. If we are taught to sing the traditional songs while we are young, we'll sing those songs throughout our whole lives. And who do we drum and sing songs to? Our children. This is how we keep it going. Great Spirit, today, teach me to teach the children.

At times life is wicked and I just can't see the light

A silver lining sometimes isn't enough

To make some wrongs seem right

Whatever life brings

I've been through everything

And now I'm on my knees again

But I know I must go on

Although I hurt I must be strong

Because inside I know that many feel this way

[Chorus:]

Children don't stop dancing

Believe you can fly

Away...away

At times life's unfair and you know it's plain to see

Hey God I know I'm just a dot in this world

Have you forgot about me?

Whatever life brings

I've been through everything

And now I'm on my knees again

But I know I must go on

Although I hurt I must be strong

Because inside I know that many feel this way

[Chorus]

Am I hiding in the shadows?

Forget the pain and forget the sorrows

Am I hiding in the shadows?

Forget the pain and forget the sorrows

But I know I must go on

Although I hurt I must be strong

Because inside I know that many feel this way

[Chorus]

Am I hiding in the shadows?

Are we hiding in the shadows?

Because of local forest fires last Summer, it was almost too smoky to go for a mountain bike ride, but I'm glad I did because the sun filtered through the smoke made the trail look even more beautiful.

Uncommon common sense and zero courtesy.

Because there is no back to the basics.

Just because you're the Lord of Darkness doesn't mean you can't appreciate the architecture. Besides, it's nice to see how the other half live sometimes.

Incidentally, if anyone has doubts that this IS Satan's Eura Mobil (no, EURA mobil) on the back was the obligatory strapped bike...and it was a 1970's Chopper. If that isn't Satan's push bike of choice I don't know what is.

Because Portland, too is awesome.

Because of the riverfront construction, the view is not as pristine most would wish but I think I can look on the bright side and anticipate what our city will look like in a couple of years!

Here's to the Future!

I went to Target yesterday and they have all their Christmas stuff out -- so I bought some tinsel, lights and a couple bows and took a few shots... I'm sure there will be many more attempts, but here's a first go at potential cards. Bear came in from a short time outside with a new scratch under his eye this morning, so I only got a few of him (plus he's not quite as accommodating as she is). I think it may have been another attempt by Belle to hog the spotlight.

Preferences? Or ideas?

how deep. But I just started thinking. You are not your skin or your arms or your legs or your brain or your hands or your ears or you nose or your butt or anything. Not really. It always seems like there's something else I guess. A soul? I'm not sure. But I just feel like there's something else beyond just my body

Because this is storage for most of my kitchen appliances, I affixed a power strip on the wall behind the shelf and secured it with Scotch foam mounting tape. (you can see it in the upper left-hand corner). As with many of my projects at home and pretty much everything I do at work, I made gratuitous use of the Montera cable management kits.

Because there HAS to be a Father Ted homage sign! I was a little nervous someone else would do one & we'd experience a terrible moment of protest faux pas.
