Because of the Atlantic Ocean, the weather in winter changes several times a day. This is for taking of the different light situations great, but the wet conditions, as heavy snow or rain, is the death for the old cameras as Rolleiflex or Hasselblad.

Nevertheless I took that wonderful moment.

Because you've gone

Because these birds don't always give me such great opportunities in this location, and to follow up on my mistaken belief that they'd shown up and then left the area back in mid- March, please put up with this very lengthy series of Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoneceus), male and female, from the south end of South Belmont Pond, Kelowna, BC. at the beginning off April.

In case you're wondering, they're arranged this way because, well, that's the way I wanted 'em. I'll leave it

to you to figure out whether or not there's a method in my madness....

And finally the best of the lot (IMHO) is buried just past the middle of the series....

I’m interested in the silent shutter for lunar and planetary images because eliminating mechanical shutter wear could free me to improve the quality of my images by taking many more frames and getting better lucky images for stacking when atmospheric seeing isn't at it’s best. Because the extra noise introduced by the electronic rolling shutter used for silent shutter images is far below the eight bit resolution offered by compressed images, I decided to compare the quality of processed images taken with the two techniques as well as the original images.

These images are from my first night out with the a6300 which was at prime focus on a Questar f15 1400/89mm telescope. Images were take at ISO 200 for 1/50 sec. I took about 40 images each with the mechanical shutter (with the electronic first curtain shutter option to minimize vibration) and with the fully electronic silent shutter. The quality of the images was auto graded and the best 8 were selected from each batch. Because of the wide, half degree, field of view atmospheric seeing can cause mirage like distortions of the Moon’s surface. This isn’t a problem for small area shots of the Moon or planetary images because of the smaller field of view. For full disk Moon images, the results of stacking are improved if each image is geometrically normalized before stacking. I use Nebulosity’s 8 parameter affine transformation. The cost of this is that each frame takes about one hour to align. This translates to a practical limit of 8 images for an overnight alignment run. Processing consisted of deconvolution and wavelet processing in Lynkeos to recover resolution lost to the atmosphere and diffraction in the small, 89mm objective, telescope. The exposure curves are then adjusted to enhance contrast and slightly boost saturation in Photoshop.

One way to see the quality of the low intensity data near the noise floor is to examine the terminator region. You can see detail extend into the dark part of the moon in the processed images. The post processing of the two images was similar, but not identical. As you can see in the raw images there were slight differences in exposure although the camera settings were the same except for the silent shutter setting. These may be because of the silent shutter or differences in transparency of the sky between the two sets of exposures.

My current thoughts on astrophotography with the a6300 so far are as follows.

Measurements that I’ve seen of the images of the electronic silent rolling shutter on the Sony a7 series cameras show about a stop of increase in noise at low ISO speed compared to the mechanical shutter.

For dim targets like DSOs where noise must be minimized and relatively few, long exposure, images are stacked - the mechanical shutter is clearly a win.

For small bright targets like planets where resolution must be maximized and cropped video is frequently used, the extra noise in video capture (or wide FOV silent shutter shots) isn’t an issue. Stacking more images can reduce noise and the video codecs don’t capture the full raw dynamic range in any case. Video (or silent shutter for the widest FOV) works well to capture the thousands of frames that are preferred, without mechanical wear on the shutter mechanism.

Full disk images of the moon are an in between case. The images are bright and the number that I stack is limited by the long processing time for the affine geometric normalization. I’d like to have more full disk images to choose from, without wearing out my mechanical shutter. From my results so far it seems that to see a difference that silent shutter makes in quality of the final result takes pixel peeping and may be mostly due to seeing and transparency variation.

“Because Earlier I looked a mess” 🎶🎵🎶

So the next time some single-minded profit-seeking bastards want to come and mess with you and your community and try and irreversibly change it for the worse, follow the advice of how the New Era Estate came TOGETHER, fought them off and WON. So even if Russell Brand self-destructs and becomes that risible discardable figure, it won't matter much because local direct action is all we've got, with or without him. Anyway, other high-profile people can be sought to raise the exposure for the cause. In the end, 93 families have kept their homes in Hackney, East London, and these courageous resident campaigners will undoubtedly inspire countless others who find themselves in similar predicaments whether it be housing or fracking or the like. This for me is what brings hope in 2015.

Dec. 31 2011 - "A Chinese proverb says an invisible red thread connects those destined to meet, despite the time, the place, despite the circumstances. The thread can be tightened or tangled, but never be broken."

I just got this done yesterday and I love it. When I came across this image on tumblr I fell in love with it.

I've always believed that everything happens for a reason, even the shitty things in life. We grow stronger. We meet people for a reason, whether to experience love or hate. I've always believed that everything will happen the way its supposed to. All of my tattoos are important to me but this one for some reason feels a tiny bit more special than the others.

It's strange though because when people see my tattoos all they see are...well....the ink and the drawing. But each one means a lot to me. I love them all.

Because I love to play with my food and have always wanted a life-size blueberry muffin all to myself.

Because my elementary school age grandchild is not going to school and needs to stay home because of the COVID-19, she and I are doing an art challenge 3 days per week. The first subject is FRUIT. Here's one of my first Tuesday drawings. I did three.

Because of the amazing feedback to my Thunderjaw I really wanted to make something for the fans and the developers of "Horizon Zero Dawn".

So I designed a Mini-Version of the Thunderjaw that you can build yourself!

Because of the long drought conditions the local San Diego area has experienced, the coastal bluffs have had years to dry out and settle. When it rains, the earth absorbs the water and expands, causing bluff collapse.

Because it was low tide yesteday when I was at the beach I was able to get to the far end of the cliffs which is only the second time I have done that as I always time my visits for high tide.

I can only assume that Oyster Catcher and Rock Pipit had eggs in this outcrop because they didn't fly away and just kept a very wary eye on me.

Its amazing how quickly the sun rises and I love how it gives a mellow yellow feel to the sea mist that was hanging around.

I'm feeling rather mellow yellow myself at the moment!

car shows are still horrible venues for a photographer, I would love to get this beast out in a closely mowed open field with a decent background.

I am listening to the song by Chinese diva Faye Wong, "Because Of Love" (duet with Eason Chan).

In the lyrics, it says time loses its impact on the lovers. They become forever young because of love.

"因為愛情 怎麼會有滄桑

所以我們還是年輕的模樣"

When I was shooting the cherry blossoms at Minoru Park yesterday, the wind blew off the flower petals and they showered like rain.

I was standing under canopy. I felt like time was frozen and at the same time time flied in light speed.

When I came out of the shade, it is like the start of a new century.

Happy weekend!

- because street, they say, should be shot in BW? ;)

Because I love Charlotte Cardin and all her songs

Just another frame of this amazing scene, because truly this is what I came for!

Those who follow my photography know that two favorite rail subjects I seek out all over are 'Freight Under Wire' and 'Trains Where Trains Shouldn't Be' (aka street running). Well in Michigan City, Indiana you can do both at once.. I was fortunate to make this happen for the first time last year but alas then it was only light power and a freight against the light.

This time I got the holy grail of an eastbound freight in the morning!

So I'm gonna post a few of these just because before returning to the rest of the shots of this chase.

Having dropped most of their train at Bailey Yard in Burns Harbor, original CSSB GP38-2s 2003 and 2000 from the ten unit order delivered by EMD during the Chessie System ownership era have a dozen or so in two headed east toward the Carroll Ave. shops. A half mile east of the prior shot but still in middle of 11th Street, we see them again swinging through the famous s-curve between Lafayette and Cedar streets and starting up the great as they come through the York Street intersection near MP 33.6 on the South Shore mainline.

In the background can be seen the gothic steeple of St. Mary the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic church. Built in 1868, the central steeple was heightened to its present form in 1927 and is a prominent backdrop in many South Shore images.

Alas scenes like this are on borrowed time which was my impetus for returning so soon. If you want these iconic shots you better come quick because a massive nearly half billion dollar project to double track the line all the way to Michigan City in order to shave 30 or more minutes off transit times and allow greater train frequencies is supposed to start construction soon. This will lamentably lead to the end of street running and the removal of nearly all the homes and structures on the south side of 11th street and the straightening of this curve. In fact, many more than last year were already bought up and either already demolished or boarded up with big no trespassing project signs on them. And of course the downtown midstreet passenger stop on 11th street has already closed so the line already felt different than 11 months prior. To learn more check out the project web site and the detailed PPT presentation on the project: www.doubletrack-nwi.com/images/DT_PRS_DTVirtualOpenHouse_...

But change is the only constant in life, and the CSSB has been modernizing and rebuilding since the Insull era. In fact in 1956 the long section of street running in East Chicago was bypassed and in 1970 the street running into downtown South Bend was abandoned...so I suppose this is just a continuation of what has come before.

If you recognise this a little, that because it was a drawing from 2007, brought to the future by my now more skillful pencil and paper-cutting and painting skills.

Because I fell in love with the haunting, flutey songs that I heard when hiking through local forests, I had been looking for a cooperative Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina) to photograph for quite some time. Frankly, the thrushes are songsters of unmatched beauty to my ear. Their calls are simply composed of notes and tones I would never have expected a bird to make. To me, they intone video game sound effects from the 90s! You may hear the song here.

How do they accomplish these vocalizations? They, like other birds, don't have a larynx. Instead, they have a Y-shaped syrinx that allows them to sing two notes simultaneously. And they are masters of this trick, singing duets with themselves that would put human crooners to shame.

The Cranberries - Dreams

Oh my life is changing everyday

in every possible way

And though my dreams

it's never quite as it seems

I know I felt like this before

But now I'm feeling it even more

Because it came from you

Then I open up and see

The person fumbling here is me

A different way to be

And now I tell you openly

You have my heart so don't hurt me

For what I couldn't find

Talk to me amazing mind

So understanding and so kind

You're everything to me

Just point and shoot...all real ...the ball is made out of acrylic.
