A very worn, largely illegible, and graffiti-covere sign on a Manhattan business.

We don’t know if they are good beans, but at least they are free, or so we are led to believe. This window, made opaque, was under scaffolding that covered a sidewalk next to the building in Manhattan. Such scaffolding seems ubiquitous to me. I can’t vouch for this, but I was told by someone who should know about such things that the scaffolding contractors like to leave the stuff up since it is less expensive than moving it and warehousing it!

This kind of forgotten urban detritus fascinates me. At some point in the past, someone must have put some thought into the signage, determining which colors to use, what size fonts to use for different text, and aligning those yellow lines that divide it into sections. But neglect, weather, and graffiti have done their work, and today it is hard to even figure out what the sign is about.

Taken from a far distance but my first picture of a Tundra Bean Goose, so adding it to the collection :-)

Dries red beans ready for use in your favorite recipe. I used these beans to make Buster Holmes World Famous Red Beans and Rice. Read our review of this cookbook.

View On Black Actually, I took this photo because of the green waterway through the soybean field. This bean field was much larger than it looks. I took this photo over a week ago and most of the fields in this part of the state are harvested already. It sure doesn't take long.

Scarlet Runner Bean Phaseolus coccineus — I planted a lot of these because I had hoped to attract humming birds. Not many are left after they attracted rabbits, deer, and Japanese beetles. I haven't seen a hummingbird yet! 8>)

Even if the hummers don't find them - I may still have a few of the edible beans to enjoy myself.

"The Bean" is a huge Millennium Park sculpture so dubbed by Chicagoans because of its shape. When people say "Meet me at the Bean", there's only one place that could possibly be.

Arrived at 6 a.m. when the park opened to catch the early morning sun on the fantastic Chicago architecture. The crowds later in the day make getting clean shots difficult, though as you can see by the last image in the comments, you can have fun capturing people's reactions to their reflections. :-)

Drying and raking the beans...

The coffee cherries are spread out in the sun, either on large concrete or brick patios or on matting raised to waist height on trestles. As the cherries dry, they are raked or turned by hand to ensure even drying and prevent mildew. It may take up to 4 weeks before the cherries are dried to the optimum moisture content, depending on the weather conditions. On larger plantations, machine-drying is sometimes used to speed up the process after the coffee has been pre-dried in the sun for a few days.

The drying operation is the most important stage of the process, since it affects the final quality of the green coffee. A coffee that has been overdried will become brittle and produce too many broken beans during hulling (broken beans are considered defective beans). Coffee that has not been dried sufficiently will be too moist and prone to rapid deterioration caused by the attack of fungi and bacteria.

The dried cherries are stored in bulk in special silos until they are sent to the mill where hulling, sorting, grading and bagging take place. All the outer layers of the dried cherry are removed in one step by the hulling machine.

The dry method is used for about 95% of the Arabica coffee produced in Brazil, most of the coffees produced in Ethiopia, Haiti and Paraguay, as well as for some Arabicas produced in India and Ecuador. Almost all Robustas are processed by this method. It is not practical in very rainy regions, where the humidity of the atmosphere is too high or where it rains frequently during harvesting

All I could find in my pantry were these teeny weeny little green beans, called "mung beans". I make a sweet bean soup using palm sugar and dried mandarin peel, following my mum's recipe. Those containers are thimbles, which illustrates how small the beans are.

WIKIPEDIA

The mung bean (also known as mungbean, mung, mungo in Philippines, green gram, or golden gram) is the seed of Vigna radiata. It is native to the Indian subcontinent. They are small, ovoid in shape, and green in colour. The English word mung derives from the Hindi word मूँग mūṅg [muːŋɡ].

April 2012 Scavenger Challenge #25. Education Center: "Be creative!" You've seen it often in Scavenge Challenge. What exactly does "creative" mean? It means to "think outside the box" (in colloquial terms), to visualize something in a manner which is surprising and unusual. A dose of creativity elevates photography to an art form rather than simply a means of documenting objects and events. Creativity cannot be taught. It comes from within. To tap the depths of your creativity, you are given as your assignment subject this item: one cup of dried beans. Use them wisely!

Today I am thankful my youngest comes home from a weekend retreat with her youth group. I am thankful that her favorite soup is 13 bean soup and it is the perfect weather to cook it in. I am thankful that my husband convinced me to start using my 24 mm the way I shoot, not the way I think one should shoot with it.

Happy Sunday Sliderday! I slid saturation, contrast, added a little blue and took out some black.

I've been craving beans and rice. It's something always available at my great grandmothers home. No matter what time of year it was or what else she cooked there was always beans and rice.

Microwave the beans for about four minutes—this will keep them crisp while you cook them on the stove.

Heat a bit of olive oil in a saucepan and add garlic when the oil is hot. Add the beans when the garlic is slightly brown, and add oyster sauce and a pinch of sugar to taste. Stir on medium heat until the beans are slightly pliable. (Taste a few of the beans to make sure they've taken on enough of the oyster sauce flavor.)

She finally arrived yesterday. As soon as I saw her picture, I had to have her, & I knew her name was Bean. She is just so friggin' cute. She's all dressed up for her first grownup party, I'll have to get her big sister ready too.

Little bean with his owner is here ( from penang ).

Queso Beans (muted calico) has taken over Kiwi Fruit’s (lynx point) favorite daytime sleeping spot… the 1994 MLB baseball comforter we thrifted last year. After I laundered it I laid it on the bed with the sheets/pillow cases/bed skirt, fully intent to move it to the project pile to deconstruct and make a summer time baseball set to wear. Kiwi promptly claimed it and it has been a staple of the “end of bed” bed making routine ever since. Today I sat it down in the wrong spot and Queso took that as her cue to steal home.
