On Saturday, Feb. 1, visitors to the Pequot Museum enjoyed a day full of activites and workshops. In our Gathering Space, Dr. Manuel Lizarralde, professor of Ethnobotany at Connecticut College, a bowyer and arrow maker for the last 25 years, demonstrated how to fletch an arrow. During our First Saturday Crafts, visitors learned about the importance of the butterfly and made one out of recycled items as well as enjoyed a creepy-crawly treat. Our featured artist, Elizabeth James Perry (Aquinnah Wampanoag) led a porcupine quill embroidery class in one of our classrooms, where students learned how to sew porcupine quills onto a small leather bag.

Pendant I made for a friend.

I love how it turned out.

Made this for a friend's bridesmaids. This is the first go, hope she likes it.

Pretend the background is actually white.

on a eco-tour, we stopped off at a mayan village just outside of the mayan ruins of Coba, Mexico to learn about their culture and eat lunch. this is a picture of a couple of mayan girls hanging out with one girl beading. plus at the village, there was an awesome cenote, which is an underground cavern filled with freshwater, into which we were lowered to go swimming in the middle of the hot muggy day. the ecotour was working with the villagers for some neat projects to keep their lifestyles more sustainable - such as training some of the local village male youths in photgraphy so that they can sell pictures to the passing tourists instead of leaving their village to the cities for work. a lot of tours of native villages have a bad rep of being human zoo tours - like many of the tours in the hilltribe area of northern thailand - but this tour seemed to genuinely work with villagers and was sensitive so that we would not overly intrude or offend cultural norms.

As in other countries, in Japan there is a large community of enthusiastic beaders who love to create their own original jewellery – whether it is their own original designs or whether they take their cue from professional designers. Either way, beaders most often find inspiration and how-to instructions in specialized Japanese hobby magazines. The most popular beading magazine in Japan is Bead Friend. This year, Preciosa Ornela, together with its Japanese distributor, launched an extensive marketing campaign in Bead Friend. This seed beads jewellery is designed by famous Japanese designer Ms.Yoriko Sho (www.shoyoriko.com/). More about "Beading in Japan": preciosa-ornela.com/Beading-in-Japan

I called this vase "Deep Love" because of the depth and intensity of the colors. I really loved this piece!

The sequins remind me of fish scales.
