January 21, 2020 - This morning we had our first landing in Antarctica. I can now check off visiting all seven continents from my bucket list.
We visited Argentine Base Esperanza located in Trinity Peninsula. It is a inhabited year round by Argentine families. This base was founded in 1953 and holds the distinction of the birth of Emilio Palma on 7 January 1978. Emilio was the first person to be born in Antarctica.
We saw the historic stone hut where Andersson, Duse and Grunden from the 1903 Nordenskjold Swedish expedition lived. We also visited a small museum, chapel and the school house.
Wildlife seen: Adélie Penguins, Gentoo Penguins and Snowy Sheathbill. On our Zodiac ride back to the ship we saw a Leopard Seal.
Lorient was the location of a German U-boat (submarine) base during World War II. Grossadmiral Karl Dönitz decided to construct the base on 28 June 1940. Between February 1941 and January 1942 three gigantic reinforced concrete structures were built on the Keroman peninsula. They are called K1, K2 and K3. In 1944 work began on a fourth structure. The base was capable of sheltering thirty submarines under cover. Although Lorient was heavily damaged by Allied bombing raids, this naval base survived through to the end of the war. Lorient was held until May 1945 by the Nazi German army, even though this city was surrounded by the American Army, since the Germans there refused to surrender.
Most things in Italy, old or new, have beautiful design and style to them.
I noticed several cities have distinctive streetlights - Florence is no exception.
I saw these throughout Florence.
It is a triangular base with three almost human looking feet, and depending on how you want to look at it, a sensuous design. To me, very Italian!
This particular one was along the banks of the Arno River.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Senior Airman Shawna Richards, a entry controller with the 30th Security Forces Squadron, trains her military working dog, Baiky,on Feb. 26. Security forces train their bomb and drug sniffing dogs to seek out illegal items and potential threats. Handlers prepare the dogs for duty using obstacles designed to simulate real scenarios. Rakaposhi (Räkapoşi) (Urdu: راکا پہشئ, Hindi: राकापोशी) is a mountain in the Karakoram mountain range in Pakistan. It is situated in the Nagar Valley approximately 100 km north of the city of Gilgit. Rakaposhi means "Snow Covered" in the local language. Rakaposhi is also known as Dumani ("Mother of Mist"). It is ranked 27th highest in the world and 12th highest in Pakistan, but it is more popular for its beauty than its rank might suggest.
