aka Pope Air Force Base Depression-Era Cantonment
Cumberland County, NC
Listed: 01/25/1991
The Pope AFB District, which includes Old Family Housing units and Depression-era administration and barracks buildings, commemorates not only the earliest military expansion period at Pope Field, but also marks the pre-Public Works Administration period of direct Federal efforts to alleviate the massive unemployment which accompanied the Great Depression. Under the Emergency Relief and Construction Act of 1932 (Title III, Sec. 301), which provided 3300 million nationwide for public construction, Congress authorized the expenditure of $140,000 to build & barracks and $140,000 and $34,000 respectively, for commissioned and non-commissioned officers' quarters (Old Family Housing units on Etheridge, Virgin, and Maynard Streets.) Thus, the buildings included in the Pope AFB Historic District are an enduring symbol of the few pre-Roosevelt era attempts to put a nation back to work during its darkest economic hour.
The housing structures built at Pope AFB in 1933 - 1934 are also typical of buildings constructed at military bases across the United States during that period to alleviate the severe military housing shortage which occurred during the first quarter of the twentieth century. By 1927 military housing in the United States was described as a "national disgrace," with more than one-half of the S1,O97 members of the military housed in World War I-era temporary housing or tents. Legitimate concerns for the health and safety of the country's military forces, as well as the need to boost the economy, were therefore responsible for 1930s congressional appropriations for military construction projects, including those at Pope AFB.
Pope AFB has played a leading role In the development of United States air power. Established within 15 years after the first successful powered flight in 1903, Pope Field is one of the oldest installations in the Air Force. Pope Field was officially established on April 1, 1919 by the War Department

Our Everest base camp trek is an incredible trek that offers sensational mountain views and an understanding into the lives of the Sherpa individuals. Subsequent to investigating the sanctuaries, altars, bazaars and eateries of Kathmandu we take an exciting mountain flight to Lukla and trek up the Dudh Kosi Valley, encompassed by the taking off tops of Thamserku and Kusum Kanguru. It's a precarious climb to Namche Bazaar, capital of the Kumbu Sherpas, where we are again welcomed by breathtaking mountain vistas. A rest day here guides acclimatization and there are incredible discretionary strolls to appreciate the territory. We then take after the trail to acclaimed Tengboche, found high on an edge where a radiant 360-degree scene is standing by. The perspectives of Everest, the Lhotse-Nuptse Wall, Ama Dablam and Kantega rule this serene and profound area – without a doubt a standout amongst the most quiet and motivating spots on the planet. globalholidaysadventure.com/
This is Mark, a native of Zimbawbe, but currently based and known throughout London as 'Baliva', a hip hop artist spreading the word of Christ. I met Mark while visiting the World Press Photography exhibit at the South Bank Centre in South London.
Mark was easy to chat with and was into having his photo taken for my project. Mark's message focuses on the fact that 'we live in a culture where people are not complete until they achieve fame, until their bank balance overflows, until the pain of relationship breakdowns are resolved.' This forms the foundation of Mark's message and his goal to "create Hiphop that screams of the worth of knowing Jesus Christ."
I dig his views on the current state of hip hop: "At it's best, Hip-Hop started out as the voice of the voiceless, an expression of talent that was used to resolve conflict in a positive way. At it's worst, Hip-Hop has been scarred by the love of crime, sexual immorality and materialism."
Personal beliefs and politics aside, I am thankful my project has brought me to people like this. Do your thing Baliva. Check out more of what he is up to: balivamusic.com/about

Three Hawks and an Owl standing by ready for take-off
On a more taxonomic note: the Hawks are Nephele comma forma derasa. They are commonly called the Comma Hawk, based on a white comma shaped mark in the forwing. However the derasa form actually lacks this mark completely or just, as in these three, show a tiny white point. More a Full-stop Hawk really in this case.
The Owl (Noctuidae) is a bit more of a mystery. Any suggestions there would be much appreciated
