After 188 years as an active US Army base, Fort Monroe closed on 9-15-11. It is now in civilian control with it future undecided. Hopefully, it will become part National Park and part new development to create housing, jobs and more recreation for the area..

All the birds have flown up and gone;

A lonely cloud floats leisurely by.

We never tire of looking at each other -

Only the mountain and I.

(Soaking in the beauty of Ramjak base camp)

My buddy Eric & I trolled around Munising looking for to pirate camp (set up tent on private or non-sanctioned public land). We settled on this gem adjacent to the Holiday Inn Express.

Had we brought our swimming trunks we would have considered having a dip before snuggling in for sub 0 degree temperatures.

The Base Pond near Saint Marie (the former Glasgow AFB) is such a hidden gem! As soon as you arrive you hear all the best sounds in nature. The water of the pond laps at the shore. All manner of birds sing. And of course the wind blows, because it is eastern Montan after all! Usually not many people are there. Sometimes no one at all. Right now all the rows of lilacs are blooming, the grass is so green and so are the trees. Like I said -- hidden gem!
