Comment:The graffiti shows a famous and well known character, Bart Simpson, from the animated television series The Simpsons. Probably everyone of us watched the cartoon at least once and we all know the Simpson family in which Bart is the eldest child. He is a son of Homer and Marge and has two younger sisters named Lisa and Maggie. The Simpsons represent an American middle class family that lives in a town called Springfield. Homer is shown as a working man who financially takes care of the family, Marge is a typical housewife, Maggie is the youngest child who sucks her pacifier all the time, Lisa is Marges favourite daughter and Bart a ten year old who is always causing trouble. The family is very dysfunctional but despite that they love and take care of each other. After the release of The Simpsons we could find Barts pictures almost everywhere. Teenagers wear T-shirts with his character, there are stickers, posters and other things. I think that the reason why his character was and still is such a success is because of his rebellious attitude and pride by which many teenagers are inspired.

Dec 4 2009, ~4:10PM Civic Center BART. The fat cop on the right is named Shipley. The one on the left lost his baton while waddling to assist Shipley. Shipley was being harsh and abusive to Mohawk, who was being compliant and cooperative.

In other words, with the Marin and Peninsula lines; with Geary and Peninsula lines; and without either.

From Engineering Report: Rapid Transit for the San Francisco Bay Area, June, 1961; Engineering Report Supplement: Rapid Transit for the San Francisco Bay Area, October, 1961; and The Composite Report: Bay Area Rapid Transit, May, 1962.

It's surprising that BART expected higher 1968-1969 ridership without the Marin Line than with it. Maybe because they could get Geary running faster without having to worry about the Golden Gate Bridge.

Actual 1980 ridership, 34,384,335. By now, of course, it is doing quite well.

From Sarah Syed @ BART:

"Thanks for the photo-- glad you are enjoying the new space!

There have been a few problems in implementation (you may still see some

cars with a folding seat too close to the bike space, or new bike space in

cars that bikes don't have access to!), but all in all, its a good start.

We are pushing to make this part of the standard car design when we

replace the entire BART Car fleet in a few years. In a few months we will

be doing passenger surveys on the new bike space, so hopefully feedback

will be good. Until then, I'll pass your comments along to some

colleagues who have been very involved in this project."

BART planners thought people would be diverted from other means of transportation in proportion to what these curves showed for the relative speed of BART vs. the other mode.

(That is, they thought that if they matched the speed of cars, they would get about 75% of downtown work trips and 45% of non-downtown work trips; more than that if they could be even faster; and less if they were not as fast.)

They were optimistic both about the ultimate speed of the BART system and about the rate of diversion from other modes.

This was taken through the cardboard insert from a toilet roll with the Bart Simpson money bank sitting inside our laundry basket. I wanted the blue to contrast with Bart's face.
