Photo composite (2) showing the valley between Baked and Broken Mountains.
From the top of the saddle we could see a second trail leading back toward the Gas Shacks but it was up higher on Baked Mountain. For some DUMB reason I assumed it was there so that you didn't have to hike back up to the huts - you could just stay up high on Baked Mountain and end up at the same elevation as the shacks.
WRONG.
For one thing, even if the ground wasn't treacherous, there's this big craiggy spot close to the shacks that is impassible. Well, stupid me, I decided to try the trail and eventually it petered out and we were left high and dry halfway up Baked Mountain on the most precarious "rock" footing I've ever experienced, this side of ice.
In the photo, all the dark grey stuff is compacted pumice. It is hard, you cannot dig in at all for traction, and it is sprinkled with loose, lentil-sized bits of pumice which act like marbles in terms of slipperyness. Whee. The light patches are loose, "fluffy" areas that give out under your weight but because they give they act like a pillow and you only skid so far before stopping.
If a person was standing at the bottom of the mountain in this picture, they'd be a mere speck. It took over an hour to skid from fluffy patch to fluffy patch aaaaaallllllll the way down to the bottom. Talk about hair-raising. This is why people die out here. At least we didn't have our 50-ton packs on us.
Last weekend I participated in a Bake Exchange. I assembled a tray for Paul to take to work and share. I love cookies, but I've been feeling too sick these last few weeks to really enjoy them.
There is a selection not on this tray....I saved Noella's favourites for her to enjoy. They are these balled shaped pecan cookies coated with an icing sugar glaze. When she asks for them she requests "cookie balls". Paul and I only got one and I've saved the rest for her. She only has 2 left.

The Counselor (our newest coworker and a longtime friend of VV's) cooked us dinner on Monday! It was the awesomeness and the deliciousness. He can crash at VV's place whenever he likes as far as I'm concerned.

It's got my baking spices, some vanilla extract, a vanilla bean and some vanilla powder. There's also one of the nifty little Microplane graters that holds a whole nutmeg and a short cinnamon stick.
It sits on the shelf over my baking area. When I lift it down I've got all the basics in one spot and they don't take up space near the range where they're not particularly useful.
This is what came OUT of Kitchen Aid Mixer #3!! It's metal shavings. vanillaicing.typepad.com/vanilla_icing/2009/12/and-then-t...
