Thanks julochka for the book recommendation that has transformed my bread baking (The river cottage bread handbook). Pictured here is a basic wholemeal topped with oatmeal in the foreground and poppyseed in the background (the poppyseed is my favorite so far)

Ahh, freshly baked bread in the morning! We bought this bread baking machine and tried it this morning. Well actually last evening, because then I put all the ingredients in and set the timer. So when I woke up from a good night sleep, the whole house smelled of baked bread. And I can tell you, it was good!

I've been wanting to make a Baking Mouse for ages, so this commission was a wonderful excuse! I'm really glad I found a way to have the mouse carrying the baking tray (wire-strengthened arms and paws), and the strawberry jam is liquid polymer clay tinted with red pastel. She's just over 2 inches tall.

Bake the potato for about an hour at 350 degrees. When finished the outside will feel kind of crispy but you'll feel the potato is soft inside.
My delicious new pastime!
Not unlike what Grandma used to make.
I'm still playing a bit, but can post my recipe soon.

This tape has been baked on after years of California sunlight and the texture is pretty interesting (and kind of gross!)

AbC and I decided to give her teachers made-from-scratch red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing. As part of this process, she and I purchased the necessary ingredients last night and baked the ingredients tonight. One of the first steps is to sift the dry ingredients together, which AbC is so dutifully doing here. Though baking with an 8-year old can be a tad bit more labored, we had a lot of fun and successfully baked almost two dozen cupcakes for four teachers with a few leftovers.
vanilla creme fraiche & cassis coulis
Ontario Strawbery Shortcake in the background.
The more exciting choice of the two desserts ordered. It had a crust that had a slight baked mochi chew and crust, but wet and super sweet inside. The cassis and creme fraiche helped quell its saccharine flavours but it was still much for me. I also enjoyed the golden crust more, but that's personal preference.

This square shows a typical scene from the life of a Roma woman in the old days. She pictures a Roma woman baking bread in the large outdoor oven that used to be a common sight outside Roma houses. Bread-baking was and, in some places, still is an essential skill for Roma women and girls to learn so that they will be considered good wives. Women would bake bread or types of pies each day for their families, using firewood or whatever flammable material they could find to keep the flames going.
Some women involved in this project still bake bread in this fashion.
In my quest to find a great Baked Ziti recipe I have stumbled upon this recipe of Mark Bittman's from the New York Times. This is really good. It could use some tweaking but there's always a next time. The one difference this time was I added more water in the sauce...I think it helped some.
Recipe here.
