City backyard winter cat shelters - layout. Food on the left, most shelters on the right. An outdoor length of light partially wraps the fence - you can see part of it loose on the ground, which works well for centrally lighting although it looks bad, but that's all I have. Ah well. Doors and windows are leaned for wind protection and the fence is mostly solid at cat level. (we're near a corner so the wind pattern is strong and erratic here.) Windows were used b/c I wanted to limit totally dark areas and bling spots so it felt safer. The only fully constructed and insulated wooden shelter is the corner one. Bins work well too and are easier to clean. I placed them on 2x6 plywood lifted off the ground with 2x4s, except for the food (whoops) and if there is potential for water on their roofs, bins are tilted backwards. As you can see most of the above is pretty moveable, depending on the weather. To access the inside, I only have to lift a board off.

Our landscape crew came and blew the leaves away.

And this is what our yard looked like just a few short hours later.

Picked up this plant stand at Smith & Hawken today....

This was an old fireplace in the corner of our backyard. I decided early on that i needed the bricks for lining flowerbeds so i smashed it to pieces. Never got around to finishing the job. But i kinda like the ruins anyway. :)

Backyard Campout / 2017

Lots of work on the backyard this weekend. Nate transplanted 3 large azaleas, leveled the soil, and planted 4 raspberry bushes. The bulk of his work was in the dark, rain, and even snow! Moey dug one of the large transplant holes, filled holes, and hauled a bunch of heavy rocks. Only 20+ plants remaining to install!

One of the many deer that traipse through my suburban backyard and eat my apple trees and leave deer "presents" all year long.

The backyard can be a scary place at night.

We found this fellow wandering around the backyard today whilst doing some gardening, I took the shot and to my surprise he was sticking his tongue out at the camera.
