Another sunset, this one from my backyard deck, using a panoramic technique to stitch 39 images together.
Karen often comes into our sun room, where my computer is stationed with my back to the windows, and exclaims: "Look at that sunset!" Many times, I crane my neck and say: "Yup" and go back to my work. Other times, like this, the muse in me moves me into action.
Having a deck that overlooks this expanse of sky is a wonderful addition to our house. We put the sun room and deck on over 20 years back, and have enjoyed them both enormously. I've only recently come to appreciate just how much of the view I could capture using the panoramic stitching technique.
To see the sky, as much of the expanse as I can take in and then be able to grab it, and have it in a single photograph, that is a wonder to me. I'm still wrapping my head around just how much I can use this way of imaging.
I do know that the beauty of a single sunset can make all the difference in my mood.

Not quite literally in my backyard, but less than ten minutes away from my house is Pan Am's freight main passing through Belgrade. The plan for this day was to head up to New Hampshire to shoot the Conway Scenic, but when Mr. Southwell texted me to give me a heads up on POWA clearing Readfield, it was an easy decision to delay my departure for a few minutes to get them coming through Belgrade in the early morning sun. Of course, this being Pan Am, a few minutes turned into about 45 before they finally showed up, but the light held up well, and by pure happenstance, the Melvins showed up, and helped the time go by. A few minutes later, and I was back on the road to North Conway with a decent shot in hand to start the day.
It was an unusual cold afternoon here in Southern California, fortunately my daughter was in very good spirits after being selected as student of the month (from the entire school) her grades are up and her hard work is paying off. I had a great time creating these photos for her.

The sunsets have been simply amazing for the last eight days in a row. I used to drive to places, like the Ottawa River shore or some other place just to see the sunset. For the last three or four years, though, my night vision went to space so I can't drive anymore when it gets dark. But I feel I'm so lucky that I can still see it through a window, or from the backyard.
Our resident wild cotton tail bunny. She's been with us 3 years and had several litters under our storage shed. She's made a place for her self there. She'll come out from under the shed to the sound of my wife's voice knowing that there's usually a small clump of peeled sweet potatoes left near by. She feels comfortable enough in our back yard that when the weather is nice, she'll lounge under one of our trees for hours. Even when we're sitting on the back deck watching. She's still wild and we don't approach her, but she doesn't seem bothered by us being there. We've watched her raise her babies to young adults before she runs them off to fend for them self. She hasn't caused any issues in the yard since she's been here. We grow mostly plants that these rabbits will not eat. The babies are so fun to watch! She loves peeled sweet potatoes and peanuts! She leaves the yard just as it gets dark, then stays out all night. She returns every morning. She sleeps most of the day, then repeats her adventure again every evening.

For those that were guessing, this is photo of banana leaf in my backyard on plant that is leafing out. When they first come out, they are rolled up. I held the flash below the leaf and shot the photo with macro setup down into the leaf with a narrow depth of field.
The diverse wildlife that inhabits our backyard is a constant source of amazement and appreciation for me. While I was visiting family in the lower 48, I left my cameras running, and the footage I reviewed upon my return showcased this incredible variety. From birds to martens, weasels to moose, and even a coyote, it’s fascinating to see the range of creatures that call our backyard home. Sit back and enjoy this glimpse of the varied wildlife that surrounds us.
