Assignment: PCA61 - Backlit
Deadline: April 12th 2009
Image tag: pca61
From: Cynmat
Mission:
Light coming from behind the subject. When light from behind is the main source, the subject is said to be backlit. Just as a reminder... backlighting and silhouettes are not the same, though often confused. A true back lit image will have the key light behind your subject, but another light, or reflection will also add light onto the face of the subject so as not to end up with just a black outline of the subject.
Many influences in photography use this technique. Henri Cartier Bresson, Alex Webb, Sebastio Salgado. If you take time to analyze many photographers you will notice this common denominator.
Good luck, and have fun with this. It can be challenging, but my intent with this assignment is to get folks to think outside the box.
WIT
It is a busy weekend for me, but I sat outside near our birdfeeder this morning to try to get some images of birds backlit by the morning sun.
This is a bluejay that sat for a while in full sunlight. Getting the right exposure is tough with the bright edges of the feathers.
I shot this raw, with aperture priority and a manual adjustment of +.33 to compensate the tendency of the camera to expose for the darker background.
In photoshop a little doging and burning to brighten the bird and branch a little.
Last night there was a police shooting on the surface street that I usually take home.
Two bad guys shot and killed.
Note to self, if you are a felon and are sounded by police do not get out of your car pointing a gun.
Anyhow to say the least I had to take another route home. Streets for several miles were clogged.
A normal 1 hour ride took almost 2 hours.
But I did get this nice shot on a freeway ramp with the sun setting and backlighting these palms.
Someone lit a fire and the place was filled with smoke

Working on backlighting. Took a few quick shots of my daughter in our kitchen while she was home for lunch today.
This is a layer of polystyrene, normally used with overhead lighting to diffuse the light. I'd rather that the light was more diffused. Adding another layer increases diffusion, but absorbs some light, making it dimmer. Moving the diffuser further away from the LEDs increases the diffusion, and would be a better solution for this application. It would require using wider aluminum channel that I use as a frame for the circuit board and stained glass.
This is a picture of an art piece I took outside during the school day. This is called backlighting because the sun was behind the object when I took it.
Two days, 1200 images, 20 minutes of video, and I'm back. I'll be showing bird shots until Christmas!
I like the warm reflection on the bird from the cornfield below. I got a whole series of shots of this bird as it glided by about 90 feet away.
Nikon D800E
80-400 f/4.5-5.6 at 370
f/8 at 1/2000
ISO 400
Cropped about half-size
Adjacent sky added as background
(Handheld, I might add.)
There's a fair amount of detail when seen in Original size. Not the best lens (and certainly the smallest out there among the 700's), but it does an OK job.
OH, I forgot to say that I took this shot at the Ladd Gordon Waterfowl Complex at Bernardo, NM.
