The BMW 335 was the company's first luxury saloon. The BMW sales department named it the "Autobahn' model because of its suitability for Germany's new high-speed roads. The powerful six-cylinder engine and the lightweight body and running gear made it the fastest car in its class. For well-off customers, a two- or four-door convertible was available as an alternative to the saloon.

Visit on March 2, 2018 to the Detroit Autorama, America's greatest hot rod show, as it is billed. More than 1000 cars are displayed on two levels, including a few authentic original-style classics.

Undoubtedly one of the best buses I ever bought. EDJ 242J had been in preservation, but unfortunately for its owners at the time had to be moved on. Their loss however was Knotty Bus's gain as this ex St. Helens / Merseybus / Speak Airport Marshall bodied AEC Swift was in first class condition all round. In no time at all it was painted into a similar scheme to that which we see here on sister bus GEM 598N and was placed into service. I recall it being 100% reliable until it was sadly lost in a great garage fire in the mid 1990s.

The Bristol RE on the right was ex PMT JEH 197K which I'd bought from a local independent. It had a seized Leyland 680 engine and it had been my plan to fit an AEC 691 to replicate a factory option which Bristol planned.

Going off at a bit of a tangent, rumour has it that St. Helens Corporation wanted a further batch of AEC Swifts, but Leyland refused to supply them and a cancelled order of Bristol RESLs (as per 197 here) from PMT were sold to them instead.

Chery Automobile was the largest Chinese carmaker for quite some time, thanks to successes of the QQ, Tiggo, A5 and the old Windcloud/Flagcloud (Fulwin/Cowin) models. Chery is a state-owned company founded in 1997. It began automobile production in 1999 after acquiring toolings and a license to produce the first generation Seat Toledo. Interesting is that Chery was only granted a production license for passenger cars in 2003, which means Chery cars couldn't be legally sold until 2001. Until then Chery was officially only producing automotive components, albeit in a fully assembled form. In 2001 Chery solved the problem by piggybacking on a SAIC Motor license, China's largest state-owned car manufacturer. Chery surely knowns the way around the law... After rising tensions between Chery Automobile and General Motors (GM) and Volkswagen, two of SAIC's joint venture partners, the 20% ownership SAIC once held in Chery was sold. GM was not amused and filed lawsuits after Chery copied their Spark (Matiz) and Epica (Evanda/Magnus) models. Volkswagen also planned a lawsuit against Chery, because they apparently secretly purchased the Seat Toledo blueprints, which is quite interesting considering Seat is a subsidiary of Volkswagen...

 

The Tiggo, Chery's first SUV, was launched in 2005. It is a copy of the second generation Toyota RAV4. It has received three facelifts so far and is still going strong. It was renamed Tiggo 3 as Chery was expanding the line-up, starting with the Tiggo 5 in 2013 and followed by the all new Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 3x (a raised and heavily revamped Fulwin 2) in 2016 and Tiggo 5x in 2017. The Tiggo Coupe Concept was first shown in Shanghai in April.

 

The Exeed TX is a new SUV developed for international markets. It is designed by Canadian James Hope, the designer of the previous Ford Mustang. The crossover will compete with the Kia Sorento and Skoda Kodiaq when it enters Europe in 2019/20. The Exeed is fitted with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, consisting of a 1.5T petrol engine (150 hp) and 115 hp electric motor.

Volvo introduced its final P1800 variant, the 1800ES, in 1972 as a two-door station wagon with a frameless, all-glass tailgate. The final design was chosen after two prototypes had been built by Sergio Coggiola and Pietro Frua. Frua's prototype, Raketen ("the Rocket", on the right), is located in the Volvo Museum. Both Italian prototypes were considered too futuristic, and instead in-house designer Jan Wilsgaard's proposal, the Beach Car, was accepted.

 

The ES engine was downgraded to 125 bhp (92 kW) by reducing the compression ratio with a thicker head gasket (engine variant B20F); although maximum power was slightly down the engine was less "peaky" and the car's on-the-road performance was actually improved.

 

The ES's rear backrest folded down to create a long flat loading area. As an alternative to the usual four-speed plus overdrive manual transmission, a Borg-Warner three-speed automatic was available in the 1800ES.

 

With stricter American safety and emissions standards looming for 1974, Volvo did not see fit to spend the considerable amount that would be necessary to redesign the small-volume 1800 ES.

 

Only 8,077 examples of the ES were built in its two model years.

The Lancia Fulvia is an Italian car introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963 by Lancia. It was produced by that company through 1976. Fulvias are notable for their role in automobile racing history, including winning the International Rally Championship in 1972. On testing it in 1967, Road & Track summed up the Fulvia as "a precision motorcar, an engineering tour de force".

Slightly disappointed I wasn't able to get a shot of the more distinctive front end but glad I finally came across this nevertheless, one of those spots that kept irritating me as I was seeing it fairly often but only ever on the move, so glad it finally popped up when it was stood still. These are very uncommon these days, this one looks to have been with the current owner since only 2016.

The Holden Torana is a car that was manufactured by General Motors–Holden's (GM-H), the Australian subsidiary of General Motors from 1967 to 1980. The name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning "to fly". The first Torana (HB series) appeared in 1967 and was a four-cylinder compact vehicle with origins in the British Vauxhall Vivas of the mid-1960s.

 

Whilst the 1969-73 (LC and LJ series) cars included more popular, longer-wheelbase six-cylinder versions, and with the 1974-77 (LH and LX series) cars adding eight-cylinder versions to the mix, a range of four-cylinder versions continued for the entire production life of the Torana (with later versions being marketed as the Holden Sunbird from November 1976).

 

Changing tack in Australian motor sport, Holden released the LC Torana GTR XU-1 in 1970, with performance enhanced drivetrain and handling. From this time through to the release of the Holden Commodore, the Torana remained Holden's most successful sports/performance vehicle, with many victories garnered in rallying and circuit racing.

 

The introduction of the VB Commodore in 1978 was preceded by the arrival of the updated UC Torana/Sunbird twins but with no sports versions or V8 engine options. The Torana was subsequently discontinued in 1979, followed by the four-cylinder Sunbird in 1980.

 

During 1977, the LX series saw the development of another limited build high-performance option aimed at winning in Australian Touring Car racing, and in particular at the annual Bathurst 1000 touring car race. This was the 'A9X Option' that was available on the 5.0-litre V8 powered SLR 5000 sedan and SS hatchback models. The A9X visually resembled the L34 optioned LH model, but with the addition of a rear-ward facing bonnet scoop that was specially designed to increase airflow through the engine bay to produce maximum power in racing conditions. The A9X package varied from the old L34 in road form in that whilst the engine was not modified, the A9X nevertheless had some special mechanical features such as rear disc brakes, heavy duty axles and a heavy duty '10 bolt' differential.

 

After being rushed into racing service, Peter Brock gave the A9X a dream debut by winning the 1977 Hang Ten 400 at Sandown. However, after he put his Torana on pole position, the A9X ultimately lost its debut Bathurst race in 1977 to the Ford Falcons of Allan Moffat and Colin Bond. The A9X package was soon refined and proved dominant during the following two seasons of touring car racing in Australia. Drivers Peter Brock and Bob Morris were victorious in the 1978 and 1979 Australian Touring Car Championships respectively, and A9Xs shared by Peter Brock and Jim Richards won the 1978 and 1979 Bathurst 1000's. In a show of the A9X's superiority, Brock and Richards won the 1979 race by a record 6 laps, with Brock setting the touring car lap record on the last lap of the race.

 

The 1978 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 was the 19th running of the Bathurst 1000 touring car race. It was held on October 1, 1978 at the Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst.

 

1978 saw the introduction of the Hardies Heroes Top 10 runoff for pole position, devised by race broadcaster Channel 7 and the ARDC for extra television time. Drivers drew the order in which they would run out of a hat with the order being Grice, Brock, Brabham, Johnson, Bell, Morris, Wigston, Bond, French and Moffat. Each driver had two, one lap runs to set a quick time, though the second lap was optional.
