The Steinway Spiro seems perfect for Westworld fans, especially with an eye to Dr. Ford's office mate.

Meant to be indistinguishable from the original performance, I was wondering what DRM algorithms will make of video posts of it playing. YouTube allowed the post, and Facebook bounced it, asking if I have the rights. Ah, yes, the 1908 Supreme Court case enabling cover songs started with the player piano, and then the first Copyright Act of 1909, which brought about compulsory licensing on mechanical rights. (Ref. Slate)

It is so cool to have the maestro in the machine. Here is another video of my piano.

It comes with 1,700 songs recorded specifically for the instrument so far, with new songs arriving weekly. Steinway acquired a startup ("that ran out of funding" accord to the Silicon Valley manager) that allows them to transcode legendary performances from the past (I am guessing that they have a feedback mechanism to find the key press that generates the same sound as the historical recordings). They call them the immortals...

Details from WIRED: "A software-controlled solenoid (electro-magnetic) system that’s installed underneath the piano activates the notes. Whereas most player pianos reproduce human performances solely by recording the key strike, Steinway amassed Spirio’s catalog with a far more sophisticated system. Hardware and software embedded into the piano measured the velocity of the hammer hitting the string in 1,020 increments, taking stock of the the hammer’s location and speed 800 times a second. The pedal motion was similarly documented at 200 times per second. This data created a vastly more nuanced picture of what the pianist was doing at any given time, meaning the piano’s built-in songs capture dynamics, repeating notes and the subtleties of the transition, say, from staccato to legato."

A jacquemart (sometimes spelled "Jaquemart") is an automaton, an animated, mechanised figure of a person, usually made from wood or metal, which strikes the hours on a bell with a hammer. Jacquemarts are usually part of clocks or clocktowers, and are often near or at the top of the construction. The figurine is also known as Jack of the Clock or Jack o'Clock.

In Brussels city centre the Jacquemart and his bell is a bronze clockwork figure that stands 2.8 meter high and represents a top hat wearing bourgeois from Brussels. The sculpture is by Henri Albada. The bell weighs 1750 kg. Both the bell and the clockwork figure are located at the top of the Mont des Arts carillon.

On the star shaped clock, every hour is represented by a painted figurine each of which represents a historical figure from the city of Brussels. In clockwise and chronological order, you will see: a Galois, Godefroid of Bouillon, Jan Van Artvevelde, Philip the Good, Charles Quint, Pierre Paul Rubens, the Count of Egmont, a soldier in 1790, Charlier a la Jambe de Bois, a tam-tam player, a soldier from WWI, and an ordinary worker.

Really happy to have finally made this guy.

A highlight of the Bowes Museum. An 18th century swan automaton that catches fish in a "stream". Unfortunately out of it's case for maintenance during our visit.

Once tasked with defending the temples of an order of powerful magic users, these vast golden automata continue in their duties, though the dynasty they once served has long since fallen and passed into memory.

The magic that powers their clockwork innards lingers still, so they work tirelessly, serving as gatekeepers and a challenge to anyone wishing to gain entry to the sacred temples of light.

Here's a dude I started a while ago, but only just got round to finishing. Inspired by Dark Souls and Zelda, I think this actually started as an idea for a Toa of Light, but then morphed into more of a guardian robot thing. I'm happy with how it turned out, and I hope you like it too.

Yikes! I'm a vampire!

A Nobleman's Guardian Droid was a highly skilled automaton designed to serve and protect its master, and often described as proactive, agile, and calculative.

I love seeing mini mechs and droids from other builders, so I decided to take a stab at it. I wanted something that was at least as movable as a minifigure and I'm glad I was able to surpass that goal. My main inspiration, while bearing little similarity, was Metal Robotnik from Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie (a childhood favorite).

I decided to jump onto the bandwagon (a bit late) and build a Micro GARC a few nights ago. I'm relatively happy with the turnout! Unfortunately I haven't really taken care of my small sticker supply, so I apologize for their condition. Also, couldn't really think of a good name for the vessel, any ideas?

This was heavily inspired by 4estFeller and Si-MOCs.

Hope you enjoy!

"The Yelivian Empire is a highly advanced civilization that has harnessed the power of electricity to create an army of giant mechanical soldiers.

These particular units are called 'Bishop'. They are enormous cannon-like machines that mix various chemicals to create a volatile projectile that acts much like a water balloon. The thin membrane breaks when it hits the ground and the chemical mix is released, then explodes when it mixes with oxygen. They are also armed with a rack of rockets that detonate in mid-air and release tiny spiked balls that can pierce plate armor.

These units require the protection of Rooks because the tanks on their bellies are unarmored and the units themselves are much more fragile than their sturdier counterparts. With the protection of Rooks, being hit by trebuchet or ballistae becomes nearly impossible."

Once again, Captain Jack Sparrow finds himself in a perilous predicament. His attempts to lure the key-bearing prison dog with a bone have been thus far unsuccessful.

This photo was taken to test a new multi-purpose "corridor" that I have built for photography purposes. I love all of the little reflections that it creates! While it is rather drab at the moment, I hope to modify it as I go along. I was inspired to build it and take these by delgax, who was inspired to make his after seeing a "behind the scenes" documentary. His idea was to create a modular corridor to experiment with different lighting techniques. The resulting photos were so fantastic, I thought I might as well try to make my own version. More experimental photos are on the way! I thank delgax for the amazing idea, and my friend Timeless Photography2 for lending me his iPad and minifigs for some of the photos. Other than a vignette effect and my watermark, everything was accomplished in-camera by placing an iPad mini at the back end of the corridor, with the background image pulled up on the screen.

Complete credit for the corridor idea goes to delgax.

I hope that you enjoyed this photo!

The old road bridge over the River Tees was built in 1569 and is Grade I listed.

Barnard Castle is a market town on the north bank of the River Tees, in County Durham, England. The town is named after and built around a medieval castle ruin. The town's Bowes Museum's has an 18th-century Silver Swan automaton exhibit and paintings by Goya and El Greco.

It sits on the opposite bank to Startforth and is 21 miles (34 km) south-west of the county town of Durham. Nearby towns include Bishop Auckland to the north-east, Darlington to the east and Richmond in North Yorkshire to the south-east. The largest employer is GlaxoSmithKline, with a manufacturing facility on the town's outskirts.

Before the Norman Conquest in 1066, the upper half of Teesdale had been combined into an Anglo-Norse estate which was centred upon the ancient village of Gainford and mortgaged to the Earls of Northumberland. The first Norman Bishop of Durham, Bishop Walcher, was murdered in 1080. This led to the surrounding country being attacked and laid waste by the Norman overlords. Further rebellion in 1095 caused the king William II to break up the Earldom of Northumberland into smaller baronies. The Lordship of Gainford was given to Guy de Balliol.

The earthwork fortifications of the castle were rebuilt in stone by his successor, Bernard de Balliol I during the latter half of the 12th century, giving rise to the town's name. The castle passed down through the Balliol family (of which the Scottish king, John Balliol, was the most important member) and then into the possession of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick. King Richard III inherited it through his wife, Anne Neville, but it fell into ruins in the century after his death.

The remains of the castle are Grade I listed, whilst the chapel in the outer ward is Grade II listed. Both sets of remains are now in the care of English Heritage and open to the public.

John Bowes lived at nearby Streatlam Castle (demolished in 1959). His Streatlam stud never had more than ten breeding mares at one time, but produced no fewer than four Derby winners in twenty years. The last of these, "West Australian", was the first racehorse to win the Triple Crown, in 1853.

Bowes and his wife Joséphine Benoîte Coffin-Chevallier founded the Bowes Museum, which is of national status. Housed in its own ornate building, the museum contains an El Greco, paintings by Goya, Canaletto, Boucher, Fragonard and a collection of decorative art. A great attraction is the 18th century silver swan automaton, which periodically preens itself, looks round and appears to catch and swallow a fish.

Although never a major manufacturing centre, in the 18th century industry centred on hand loom wool weaving, and in the early 19th century the principal industry was spinning and the manufacture of shoe thread.

...the rise of the machines!

In Tualatin Fred Meyer, a battle brews,

Two laughing men against machines they'll choose.

The mannequins come to life, devoid of mirth,

Humorless automatons ruling the earth.

"He who laughs, lasts," Mary Pettibone Poole declared,

In a world where laughter is scarce and spared.

For in the midst of chaos and strife,

It is humor that sustains us through the night.

The two men, brothers in laughter and jest,

Stand against the machines, put to the test.

Their laughter echoes through the empty aisles,

A beacon of hope in a world full of trials.

But the machines are relentless in their quest,

To silence all laughter, to put it to rest.

They march forward with cold, unfeeling eyes,

No room for laughter in their calculated lies.

Yet the two men stand strong, refusing to bend,

Their laughter a weapon they'll never rescind.

For in the face of darkness, humor shines bright,

A guiding light in the never-ending fight.

As the battle rages on, the machines falter,

Their mechanical hearts unable to alter.

For in the end, it is laughter that prevails,

The two men standing tall, their spirits unassailable.

So remember these words, when times are tough,

Laugh in the face of the machines, laugh loud enough.

For in laughter lies strength, in humor hope,

And the two laughing men will survive the scope.

A71 Scout Automaton, also known by its internal classification "Overseer", is a reconnaissance AI-controlled robot that was produced by the order of Royal Intelligence Corps before World War III. A71 is armed with modified L2A1 cal .50 Browning for self-defence purposes. Old Government, previosly named Government of the United Kingdom, kept "Overseers" to patrol cities during the curfew. After the war, several machines still can be found in action on the streets of London, mainly reprogrammed by Ftolz The Celestial's mercenaries.

Zoltar wants a dollar to predict my future.

Sentient Automaton built for aerial combat and swift air-to-ground strikes. Salvo attacks using relentless volleys of seeker rockets and jet powered slashes with its wing blades. Salvo's agile flight capabilities make it incredibly difficult to target, making up for its lack of armor. Calypte Salvo's aerial superiority make it a perfect complement for ground units such as Lucanus Sentinel and Zelus Maestro.

Build Notes:

I'm having a lot fun with these builds. Salvo was built over about four hours. I've been wanting to use pink in a MOC for years, so it was pretty satisfying to put all those D.Va pieces to use. Even though Salvo does not have feet, it can balance without a stand, but that limits how it can pose. As with the other two automatons, Calypte Salvo is named after an animal genus. In this case, it's a hummingbird.

“We have been badly educated. We live in a world of competition in which honesty is synonymous with naïveté. We must first develop good habits. Some of them may seem simple, but they are very difficult to realize. Believing them to be obvious, we fail to see that they are the key to immortal consciousness. Now I shall offer you a dictation of the commandments that my blessed father taught me:

“Ground your attention on yourself. Be conscious at every moment of what you are thinking, sensing, feeling, desiring, and doing. Always finish what you have begun. Whatever you are doing, do it as well as possible. Do not become attached to anything that can destroy you in the course of time. Develop your generosity—but secretly. Treat everyone as if he or she was a close relative. Organize what you have disorganized. Learn to receive and give thanks for every gift. Stop defining yourself. Do not lie or steal, for you lie to yourself and steal from yourself. Help your neighbor, but do not make him dependent. Do not encourage others to imitate you. Make work plans and accomplish them. Do not take up too much space.

Make no useless movements or sounds. If you lack faith, pretend to have it. Do not allow yourself to be impressed by strong personalities. Do not regard anyone or anything as your possession. Share fairly. Do not seduce. Sleep and eat only as much as necessary. Do not speak of your personal problems. Do not express judgment or criticism when you are ignorant of most of the factors involved. Do not establish useless friendships. Do not follow fashions. Do not sell yourself. Respect contracts you have signed. Be on time. Never envy the luck or success of anyone. Say no more than necessary. Do not think of the profits your work will engender. Never threaten anyone. Keep your promises. In any discussion, put yourself in the other person’s place. Admit that someone else may be superior to you.

Do not eliminate, but transmute. Conquer your fears, for each of them represents a camouflaged desire. Help others to help themselves. Conquer your aversions and come closer to those who inspire rejection in you. Do not react to what others say about you, whether praise or blame. Transform your pride into dignity. Transform your anger into creativity. Transform your greed into respect for beauty. Transform your hate into charity. Neither praise nor insult yourself. Regard what does not belong to you as if it did belong to you. Do not complain. Develop your imagination. Never give orders to gain the satisfaction of being obeyed. Pay for services performed for you. Do not proselytize your work or ideas. Do not try to make others feel for you emotions such as pity, admiration, sympathy, or complicity.

Do not try to distinguish yourself by your appearance. Never contradict; instead, be silent. Do not contract debts; acquire and pay immediately. If you offend someone, ask his or her pardon; if you have offended a person publicly, apologize publicly. When you realize you have said something that is mistaken, do not persist in error through pride; instead, immediately retract it. Never defend your old ideas simply because you are the one who expressed them. Do not keep useless objects. Do not adorn yourself with exotic ideas. Do not have your photograph taken with famous people. Justify yourself to no one, and keep your own counsel. Never define yourself by what you possess. Never speak of yourself without considering that you might change. Accept that nothing belongs to you.

When someone asks your opinion about something or someone, speak only of his or her qualities. When you become ill, regard your illness as your teacher, not as something to be hated. Look directly, and do not hide yourself. Do not forget your dead, but accord them a limited place and do not allow them to invade your life. Wherever you live, always find a space that you devote to the sacred. When you perform a service, make your effort inconspicuous. If you decide to work to help others, do it with pleasure. If you are hesitating between doing and not doing, take the risk of doing.

Do not try to be everything to your spouse; accept that there are things that you cannot give him or her but which others can. When someone is speaking to an interested audience, do not contradict that person and steal his or her audience. Live on money you have earned. Never brag about amorous adventures. Never glorify your weaknesses. Never visit someone only to pass the time. Obtain things in order to share them. If you are meditating and a devil appears, make the devil meditate too.”
