You know how T.S. Elliot said the world will end not with a bang, but with a whimper, in The Hollow Men? I disagree. I think it’s a bang and a mushroom cloud, but let’s not dwell on that too much. I suppose the life forms that remain – whatever they might be like – would always be surprised and fascinated when they encounter each other. Or so I’d rather believe. Is that a flying electro-fish skeleton? Why yes, and it’s just as curious as the automaton it’s come across, in a rather elegant underground sewer somewhere where the water is not fluorescent but the fish might just be.
I think this is about 30 seconds before he booped the fish and got an unpleasant surprise, by the way. Metallic parts and a zap-happy creature tend to not get along, or is it that they get along too well? Depends on how you look at it. At best, there’s gonna be a lot of profanity echoing there. At worst, there’s gonna be a steep drop from letting go of the ladder, and even more profanity at being bent out of shape. Literally.

Work on the church began around 1230. The church contains the statue of Notre-Dame de Bon-Espoir, formerly called the Black Madonna. The church's decorations also include two symbols of Dijon: the jacquemart (bell-striking automaton) and the owl. The church was classified as a Monument Historique in the List of historic monuments of 1840. The chapel of the Assumption, the sacristy, and the gallery that links them have been listed as Monuments Historiques since 5 July 2002.

Greg the Jolly Gardener lives in this Old Penny Arcade machine. You put an old one penny piece in the slot and for a short time, he becomes animated and laughing.
It's really a version of the Laughing Sailor, an automaton often found in the remaining arcades on UK seaside piers.
Frankly, I find Greg deeply sinister (especially in black and white) and can't help thinking he's just buried his mother-in-law under the patio. Greg the Guilty Gardener, perhaps.

The Cathedral at Beauvais has many things to enjoy in its interior however the Astronomical clock created by Auguste Vérité is a thing of wonder. Both in terms of its extraordinary engineering and also its aesthetic beauty
The Clock is 12 metres high, and 6 metres wide and was built between 1865 and 1868. it contains 90,000 components, including 68 clockwork automatons, and its numerous faces indicate time, tides and the movement of stars.
The 52 dials display the times of the rising and setting sun and moon, the position of the planets, the current time in 18 cities around the world, and the tidal times. The clock also displays the golden number used in calculating the date of Easter.
The hours and minutes are shown in the large central face which depicts Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles.
An 1886 edition of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine remarks that: "In the eyes of the neighbourhood the chief wonder of Beauvais is not the cathedral, but the astronomical clock...The mechanical part is admirable. It tells everything which any one can wish to know."

Rod made this automaton, inspired by a photo Di took while sitting on our boat a few years back, watching these boats racing towards us. Falmouth Working Boats are traditional craft, originally built for oyster dredging. They can be seen every weekend during the summer, racing in and around the Fal Estuary in Cornwall. They are very fast and competitive!
