Doll: Mythdoll Leroi

Steampunk automaton mod; concept and photos by me, paint and extras sculpted by my friend, Angela P.

This large automaton clock was built by Englishman James Cox and acquired by Catherine The Great in the late 1700 hundreds. It is one of the most popular attractions in the museum and probably the only working example of 18th century large scale robotics. The clock is only in operation on certain days.

David Tobias “Papa” Bamberg (1843-1914) was a fourth-generation performer in a dynasty of Dutch-Jewish magicians that extended as far back as the mid-1700s. Swing by the galleries to see “Papa” Bamberg's actual “Mephistopheles” automaton, along with pix of him surrounded by an astounding assortment of Victorian-era stage apparatus.

Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum is a fantastic little place located in a strip mall outside of Detroit. Where it differs from Chuck E. Cheese is that the machines are obviously a labor of love for Marvin. There are many from the early 20th century, some from Brighton Beach in England, and some automaton created by new artists in the craft. There are the usual pinball type machines, but they are from several decades. I loved the hokey ones that just moved, talked, or scared the crap of me. The little kids wanted the ones that gave out tickets for their skills.

Zombie, "Bounty of the Roadside" Lucky find on

junk night in Palatine Illinois. Some assembly required.

I was coming home from a Model Engineering Meeting on the usual 1st Monday of the month, when driving down a side street, I spied couch in the distance. Driving closer, There was someone sitting on it. As I passed it turned out to be a Zombie, propped up with a can of beer in his hand.

This was too good and cool to pass up. I have sworn off junking, but for a Zombie, I decided to make an exception.

I pulled the pick up over and Mr. Zombie was quickly in the back for a nice comfy ride to his new home. (I left the couch)

The Zombie is well made, He moans and groans, the arms wave, the head rotates and torso vibrates. It is voice and motion activated, so when you come near, he springs into action. The circuit board needs repair, some switches replaced and wiring repair.

For all the stuff I can fix, I never thought I would be doing Zombie Repair.

The motorcycles, clocks, wind up Victrola, machines and cannons must be moved over, there is a Zombie moving in.

On the website of designer Rob Ives ours is manufactured in plywood as "laser cut" for free download. www.robives.com/blog/cupid

I have no way these templates to cut out with a laser. This has inspired me to build this variant as Paper Model.

The girl is also designed by Rob Ives and can be found on the "Creativ-Center Brother" site.

Antique automaton from Paris. Circa 1880

After a long long hiatus I am back into the world of LEGO MOCs. I sold a lot of bricks to pay medical bills and make ends meet but have held on to a good number. Here is the first of many MOCs I've been working on during my quarantine. What do you think?

Finally got to go out & airbrush the Koi (thanks to the break in the rain!)

Think he looks pretty good, might add a few little details, but pretty much done.

This curious character working on a clock is part of a storefront sign for one of Madrid's oldest shop, the Antigua Relojeria, a clockmaker founded in 1880. The figure is partly automated: every 30 minutes the bells behind him play a little song, with the man occasionally moving as well. It was created by artist Antonio Mingote in 2010 and lies close to Plaza Mayor.

Another view of the sheep in different positions.

This wonderful Paper Automaton, designed by Rob Ives is three little sheep that 'hop' up and down as you turn the handle. It is cut out and glued together from a card net.

Three different shaped cams rotate on the central axle, pushing the sheep up and down at different times, with the little sheep hopping up and down three times as fast as the other two! :)

If you would like to make this Automaton, it can be found in Paper Automata - Rob Ives a Tarquin Publications book, also available to order from most bookstores.
