My wife and I own this entire collection. Here is one of 7 huge windows that we set up at Peoples Bank in Marietta, Ohio, each Christmas. The display pieces are animated and range from the 1940's to early 1970's.

Close-up (X10) of a patch of skin on an adult ocellated lizard. Skin colour patterns arise from microscopic interactions among coloured cells that obey equations discovered in 1952 by the great mathematician Alan Turing. We recently showed (Nature 544, 7649 : 173 ; 2017) that the skin colour patterning in ocellated lizard is at odd with that time- and space-continuous mechanism: the skin scales form spatially discrete units that are either green or black and switch colour depending on the colours of their neighbours. This corresponds to a cellular automaton (CA), a computational system invented in 1948 by John von Neumann. Using histology, numerical simulations and mathematical derivation, we identified that skin thickness variation generated by 3D morphogenesis restricts diffusion at the borders of scales and causes the Turing mechanism to transform into the von Neumann CA, allowing biology-driven research to link, for the first time, the work of these two mathematical giants.

Gary Owen on a Music Box with several instruments. Beautiful sound
Bells, drums and music.
from Wickipedia
The word garryowen is derived from Irish, the proper name Eóghan ("born of the yew tree") and the word for garden garrai – thus "Eóghan's Garden". The term refers to the area of Garryowen in the city of Limerick, Ireland.
This song emerged in the late 18th century, when it was a drinking song of rich young roisterers in Limerick. It obtained immediate popularity in the British Army through the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers.
Gary Owen in America
In early 1851 Irish citizens of New York City formed a militia regiment known locally as the Second Regiment of Irish Volunteers. The group selected "Garryowen" as their official regimental marching song. On 12 October 1851, the Regiment was officially accepted as part of the New York Militia and designated as 69th Infantry Regiment, New York Militia, (the famed "Fighting 69th" ). The regiment has served in the Civil War, Spanish–American War, the Mexican War, World War I, World War II and most recently Operation Iraqi Freedom II where it was attached to the 1st Cavalry Division as part of the 39th Separate Infantry Brigade. Today it is officially known as the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry (Mechanized) and is part of the 42nd Infantry Division.[2]

Once started the automaton runs through a cycle in which the whale can be seen to rise then dive three times. Look out for Captain Ahab on the third appearance of Moby Dick. He appears towards the right hand side of the screen, attached to the whale by the rope round his neck.

I was heavily inspired by this to make this. While my automaton is nowhere near the technical or aesthetic quality of Edulyoung's Pegasus, I am rather proud of it as a first try. This is probably my first MOC with any kind of real function (because doors on hinges don't quite count). I will most likely try my hand at another automaton soon again.
Enjoy! :)
Firefighting bot is only 17 inches tall but when it comes to putting out fires, he’s the fastest draw in town. And if a fire tries to sneak up from behind, his back is covered by an additional fire sprinkler head. Made from salvaged items.
Rock star roboticist, Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro was in Melbourne for the "Experimenta: Speak To Me" exhibition in September, 2012, and I had a chance to speak to him about his work. Professor Ishiguro is the Director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory at Osaka University in Japan.
This is the "Telenoid R1" robot, which is teleoperated from another room by the proverbial 'man behind the curtain' to interact with visitors. Its flexible skin contains nine dc motors as actuators and there are plans to market a commercial version of the 'bot.
It's deliberately stylized design may look a little startling, but I had no qualms about picking it up and holding it, finding the experience amusing as it squirmed in my arms rather than unsettling. I've done way too much work with prosthetics for a friendly little homunculus to wig me out.

Very creepy/cool automaton... the description says that the clown waves his wand and lifts his hat to reveal changing items beneath it.
