There is nothing humdrum about afternoon tea spent in the company of a certain wooden boy that enjoys nothing more than telling made up stories a little too much for his own good…
This whole series of paintings - titled The Secret Life Of Toys - revolves around an imagined magical playroom, and is inspired by vintage toys, automatons and sweet memories of childhood. As a munchkin that loved dreaming up what my playthings were up to when I wasn't around, I am so happy to finally jot these flights of fancy down on canvas!
I created these for a 'painted editorial', featured in this month's La Petite Magazine (issue 6, pp. 58-63) , and after having ooh-ed and aah-ed for quite some time over their lovely publication, I was thrilled to be approached by them a while ago for a collaboration to be featured in their latest issue.I have been working on this project behind-the-scenes, and now that the magazine's current issue is released, I am so excited to be able to share this painted editorial with you!
This 'painted editorial' is now a fashion spread, and I must admit I had the loveliest of times working on this feature, especially since I got to style what each little cutie wears myself!

Just an experiment to see how big I could get the file. This is 10,000 by 10,000 pixels (about 2.5 meters square). Flickr wouldn't accept a 15,000 pixel square PNG.

We first read the The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick back in January, but when we found it at the library a couple of weeks ago, there was no hesitation about bringing it home.
This photo and the rest we have tagged with Hugo Cabret illustrate some of the many reasons why we recommend the book. Here's a list of some of those reasons:
1. It is a beautifully illustrated cross between a comic book and a novel.
2. At the beginning of the book there is a visual reference to Charles and Ray Eames Powers of Ten.
3. A large portion of the book takes place in a train station. We love trains.
4. There is an automaton (mechanical man) in the book.
5. In addition to the illustrations, the book contains many historical photographs and film stills including some from Le Voyage Dans La Lune (A Trip to the Moon) by Georges Méliès.
6. The author included a list of sources at the end for further investigation.

WildC.A.T.S./Aliens #1/$4.95 and 44 pages from Image and Dark Horse Comics/Warren Ellis: story; Chris Sprouse: pencils/sold in comics shops and by mail.
The alien bugs are back. Now the only question left is who will fight and exterminate them … again.
It seems a reasonable assumption just from the title and cover of WildC.A.T.S./Aliens,
this is the latest and obvious attempt to cash in on the popularity of the Aliens movies and the superhero genre.
It is a questionable assumption, and dead wrong.
Tightly plotted and precisely scripted, this comic book kicks as … er, aliens. Dialog and characterizations are believable. Even if you are unfamiliar with or uninterested in the superhero genre, you will still care about Grifter, Void, Warblade and cast.
They teleport to a quarantined space station circling Earth that has been infested by everyone’s favorite acid-spitting monsters. Their less than surprising mission is to bring everyone but those bugs out and back to Earth.
They do most of that surprisingly well with some good twists.
Much credit belongs to the artist and his supporting team on WildC.A.T.S./Aliens. They successfully bring an intensity and visual clarity to this story sadly missing from too many comics. In particular, the penciller’s clean, distinct style is dynamic without being overblown. Pyrotechnics are climatic only when they are not overused. Muscle boy poses get stale very quickly.
Despite its predictability, this is an intense, rip-roaring adventure. Easily one of the best comics in its genre for 1998, WildC.A.T.S./Aliens is highly recommended for everyone except preteens.
MINIVIEW: Automaton [Image/Flypaper Press]. Three NASA robots sent to Mars return to Earth possessed by gaseous Martians. When one goes berserk, a scientist, “SWAT’ team, and the remaining Martian automatons battle to stop his bloodfest. Mind candy, but fun stuff. Recommended.
MINIVIEW, TO: Silverstorm #1 [Silverline Comics]. An unusual hybrid of corporate and superhero intrigue set in New Orleans that is weakened by its art.

Sentient combat automaton built to deal as much damage as it takes. Sentinel's kinetic shields channel the energy of incoming attacks into its two rapid fire cannons, increasing the force behind each blast. While it lacks speed, Sentinel's impressive defensive and offensive capabilities should not be underestimated.
Build notes: I had so much fun building Zelus Maestro that I decided to build another automaton in the same style. I've really been wanting to use those vehicle base pieces for a while, and I'm glad I finally found a spot for them on a build. The horns on the head and shell-like armor plating reminded me of a stag beetle, hence the "lucanus" part of the name. Not intentionally ripping off the Plague Mech series, but we're starting to head that way.

“Absolut Quartet” was inspired by the tradition of musical automatons. This six-meter-long installation made a name for itself with an appearance in a commercial for Absolut Vodka. “Absolut Quartet” consists of three robotic musical instruments; completing the foursome is an installation visitor, who prescribes the musical motif. Software developed in collaboration with composers uses this sequence as a point of departure for the computation of a three-minute piece. Here, the user-input sounds don’t serve as a melody; instead, they’re interpreted as a set of rules. Finally, the piece is performed by a robot orchestra. A marimba is played by firing balls with incredible accuracy from several meters away at the instrument’s five-centimeter-wide wooden bars; 42 robot arms and a hundred rubber balls keep the sounds coming. Harmonies are provided by a wineglass organ whose 35 hand-made glasses are played by high-tech robot fingers covered by rawhide tips soaked in a special solution that displays the same properties as water but doesn’t evaporate.

STARS (written without hesitation!)
She had not been sure what she had expected of the automaton until she had so decidedly not gotten it. At first it had only been the disappointment of injured rationality; then, as her sisters collected ILL HEALTH, OLD AGE, CHILDBIRTH, the feeling gave way to a sharper disappointment, that their town could not even be visited by a talented charlatan.
It was said that Napoleon had drawn VICTORY, to great fanfare. She thought it said more of him that he had drawn a card at all. At least there was this: he was not immortal. No more than she was, with her wried "STARS." It was worse than the disappointment, that Catherine would not give her peace about it. If there were anything to it, why could it not be so honest with her as it was with sickly Alice? Or so straightforwardly impossible, as with Anna, who may have been plain and forty but did not deserve the cruelty of her WEDDING NIGHT?
"Perhaps," she siad to TOby, asleep at her feet, "it was being literary."
She pushed open the gate, the mud wetting her feet as she stepped down to the river. She was wearing her best shoes for the occasion, which meant her most useless. Well, it did not signify, any more than the tale she would make of the innocent footpath.
"If it were being literary," she said sofly, and thought of Cassius. Oh, damn, damn, damn the thing. It was right, it would have all the satisfaction. Even though she would be the only one to know it. The fault was in the stars that she was an underling. And in herself, of course, running as deep as the current before her, but that mattered even less than the shoes. She really swore, then, at the thought of its metal certainty, and of the thought perhaps of Anna's being right as well.
It was almost enough to stop her.

The true legionary of the Roman army, these huge automatons stormed the country side and defeated Rome's enemies as far as Germania.
Unfortunately for the empire the strange mechanisms were distrusted by the new Christian religion and when the religion became widespread the people called for the machines to be destroyed. Aided by the plague that ravaged the army engineers, these huge soldiers soon fell into disrepair.

The golfer takes a chip shot and the ball drops into the hole. The handle on the right has to be turned to move the mechanisms. The tricky bit in designing this was to get a sequence of events to happen (in effect it is programmed but by mechanical means).

The Bowes Museum, a nationally renowned art collection, was purpose-built as a public art gallery for John Bowes, the illegitimate son of John Bowes the 10th Earl of Strathmore, and Kinghorne, and his wife Joséphine Chevalier, Countess of Montalbo, who both died before it opened in 1892. The gallery was built as a grand French style chateau.
This musical automaton is the icon of The Bowes Museum. The Silver Swan dates from 1773 and was first recorded in 1774 as a crowd puller in the Mechanical Museum of James Cox, a London showman and dealer. The internal mechanism is by John Joseph Merlin, a famous inventor of the time.
