This is the output of a Cellular automata system developed using a Spartan 3 Starter Kit FPGA board. The user could pause the automata, change the frame rate, apply 16 different rules (Conway's life, Brian's brain, parity, lichens, time tunnel, Greenberg, among others), seed it with a mouse-drawn pattern and choose among two color palettes.
Some features and numbers for the curious:
-Resolution: 320x240
-Inputs: 8 switches, 4 push buttons, PS/2 mouse
-Output: 3-bit VGA
-Colors: 27 (using temporal and spatial dithering)
-System clock: 30MHz max.
-Moore neighborhood.
-16 rules (limited only by the number of switches, more rules can be trivially added).
These pictures were obtained by photographing the CRT display that received the VGA signal.
More info here, and the rest of the pictures are on my photostream. If you are interested in the VHDL source code, please let me know. I will gladly share it with anyone.
Disclaimer: These pictures were edited using Photoshop to increase contrast and in some cases color inversion has been applied. Color inversion was not a feature of this system, but it can be trivially implemented.

I found this interesting paper automaton for sale on Etsy.com. Designed by "Keisuke Saka" The model, built as a mini ball track, is attractive in function. It can be rotated left or right around. A hint from me: so that the balls do not fall out before reaching the upper ejection, I have attached a safety strip on the back of the kite on both sides!

Coin operated amusement machine at the Castle Museum, York - The Spiritualist Room, probably from 1930s but it's hard to find any info even on the museum's own website! When you put in your coin (converted to take a 20p these days) the furniture revolves, levitates and opens and ghosts pop out. Sadly their other amusement machines (fortune teller, The English Execution, fire brigade and more) were out of order behind a screen.

The children's book by Selma Lagerlof, "Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey through Sweden" has inspired me to assemble this model. The drive model "Crank / Cam mechanism", with the older model "Swan" from "Rob Ives" and the little boy of me, together make a beautiful ensemble.

Probably the most amazing object at the Bowes Museum is the Silver Swan.
The Swan was made in 1774, it is thought for the Emperor Qianlong of China, but he changed his mind before delivery. It was first recorded as a crowd puller in the Mechanical Museum of James Cox, a London jeweller and 18th century entrepreneur.
It appeared at various Paris exhibitions and was bought by John Bowes in 1972 for £200.
Unfortunately it wasn't working at the time of our visit.

The Bowes Museum is a rather eccentric and quite amazing museum in Barnard Castle in England.
The museum is the vision of a pioneering woman, Joséphine Bowes and her husband John.

The drawing behind the embroidery.
I don't really like the drawing -- too much going on. I prefer how the embroidery is more simple, not getting carried away with shading, etc. I am trying to get better about showing my process, however.

This paper automaton from "Keith Newstead" has already been designed in 1997.
Dieser Papierautomat von "Keith Newsteadt" ist bereits 1997 gestaltet worden.
This is the Automaton. No one knows where it came from, or how it became sentient, but they do know that it doesn't like high technology. It will attack most advanced technology on sight, and can actually win in some cases! It has been destroyed many times, but it always reappears again some time later...

The museum contains paintings by El Greco, Francisco Goya, Canaletto, Jean-Honoré Fragonard and François Boucher, together with a sizable collection of decorative art, ceramics, textiles, tapestries, clocks and costumes, as well as older items from local history. The early works of French glassmaker Émile Gallé were commissioned by Joséphine, wife of the founder John Bowes. A great attraction is the 18th century Silver Swan automaton, which periodically preens itself, looks round and appears to catch and swallow a fish

Zeus, fed up with Sisyphus' tricks and cunning as well as his hubris - believing he was more cunning than Zeus - punished him to eternally push a boulder uphill. However, as soon as he would reach the top of the hill, the boulder would roll off and Sisyphus had to push it back again.
