Brothers II
Theme: The Maple Leaf Rag - Scott Joplin (Vernian Process cover)

Setting back in their chairs after the automaton bartender serves their drinks, Luke and Ioh talk a bit. The rum is surprisingly smooth, to Ioh's amazement. Luke drinks his brandy casually. It would seem the tomcat tiger has been a patron to this particular saloon for some time.
"So tell me," Ioh finally asks, "How did you get here?"
Luke shrugs and says nonchalantly, "Through the rabbit hole. How else?"
Smirking, Ioh retorts, "Very funny, brother. Now tell me more frank, how did you really get here?"
Keeping the cool and calm posture and, after taking his time sipping his brandy, Luke replies,"I would suppose not too dissimilar to how you did, my dear brother. And, if you think about it, the rabbit hole shtick isn't so far from the truth." He smirks back, "And certainly not so far off that it merits a retort to a rather minor tort to the truth, of which it is, of sort."
Attempting to listen to Luke talk in riddles, Ioh murrs. He shakes his head and takes a swig of his rum. "Alright, Alice, what you trying to get at? And tell me straight up, before I get the nerve to pow ya to the moon!"
Tsking, Luke looks to his brother. "Ioh, Ioh, Ioh. And to think, you are the elder to me!" He sighs and thinks, Though apparently not the smarter, to which he gets a smug look and gleam in his eyes, knowing he has well-matched the wit with the leopard who once was more or less his mentor in another time, place, and dimension. "Alright then, consider how you got here. Now tell me that isn't like going into a 'rabbit's hole' of sorts!"
Ioh grumbles, "Look here, brother, what are you trying to say? That you tunneled your way here, thinking you were gonna get to China, or...." He pauses before his temper goes into full bore. Just then, he remembers the way that he got to this place. The epiphany of that makes him blink and sober his thoughts in his reply. "Oh. So you came through the that bunker thing as well?"
"Oh, brother!" chuckles Luke, "And that's it precisely. The rabbit's hole. Or, you can call it a bunker, a basement, a dungeon, or, if you want to be really morbid and cynical, a hell hole, or through Hades itself."
Ioh nods, thinking all those descriptions have certain merit in certain ways. He sighs, then returns his focus to the tom tiger. "Ok, so how long you been here, and what do you do here, not to mention, what is with all that tuxedo get up and top hat here?"
Luke bottoms out his brandy and sets the glass back down on the counter of the bar, then gives a sigh of refreshment. He continues his cool posturing as he straightens his tie and then pulls out a hanky to give a slight dab to dry any moisture of the drink from around his lips. Putting away the piece of cotton cloth, which was delicately embroidered in fancy stitching, and having the initials 'L.D.' on them, Luke finally responds. "That, dear brother, we must pause to speak on until we are in a destination that is more private."
Rolling his eyes at the metropolitan cat he calls his brother, Ioh murrs and downs his rum, clinking the ice as he puts down the glass in a not-so-genteel manner. "Alright then, let's go somewhere and talk."
Luke just nods and stands up, brushing off his trousers a bit, then straightening his coat then top hat. With his rather fancy cane, or large wand, he draws a gesture toward the exit and gives a slight bow toward Ioh. "After you, dear brother."
Standing up, Ioh takes the cue and heads for the exit. As the two depart, the automaton picks up the glasses and readies to clean them. It speaks out in a friendly, professional, and obviously canned (tin-canned, to be precise) voice, "Thank you, sirs for your patronage to the Forgotten City Saloon, may you come back soon!" Glasses clink and doors open and close as footsteps pad out and the two brothers set out to find some place in the city to continue their reunion conversation.

I was going for a steampunk domestic automaton but was told by my kids that I looked more like a steampunk transgender C3PO - either way this was HUGE fun! The eyes were made with Tea strainers and everything else was thrift store or found items. A child's toy lit up the inside with a pretty cool effect. First time to costume and had an amazing time!

Moby Dick, Captain Ahab, the waves and the whaling boat are all in motion. As you turn the handle the waves in the foreground rock from side to side, as does the whaling boat (though out of step with the waves). Suddenly Moby Dick surfaces then dives beneath the waves. This repeats twice more, but on the last occassion Captain Ahab also surfaces attached to the whale by the harpoon line.

I imagined a Victorian household, cold and austere parents buying this automaton for their only child. wind it up and it will be your little sister and hug you. ( created on iPhone 4 and iPad 1. Apps used Juxtaposer, Iris Photosuite, Colorsplash and Pictureshow)

This model, designed by Paul Spooner, combines a wonderful paper automaton with a magic trick. I was inspired to modify it in a magician with rabbit in hat.

I made this almost entirely from flotsam & jetsam found at the sea shore. When you turn the handle, the wings flap and the heart bobs up and down in flight. I've made lots of automaton over the years, and sold them or given them away. This is one of the few that I kept. 18cm x 10cm
Anyone who's read E.T.A. Hoffmann's 'The Sandman' might agree with me that Marianne is possibly the inspiration for Olympia, the automaton with whom the hero falls in love, mistaking her (!) for a real live girl...

This is the output of a Cellular automata system developed using a Spartan 3 Starter Kit FPGA board. The user could pause the automata, change the frame rate, apply 16 different rules (Conway's life, Brian's brain, parity, lichens, time tunnel, Greenberg, among others), seed it with a mouse-drawn pattern and choose among two color palettes.
Some features and numbers for the curious:
-Resolution: 320x240
-Inputs: 8 switches, 4 push buttons, PS/2 mouse
-Output: 3-bit VGA
-Colors: 27 (using temporal and spatial dithering)
-System clock: 30MHz max.
-Moore neighborhood.
-16 rules (limited only by the number of switches, more rules can be trivially added).
These pictures were obtained by photographing the CRT display that received the VGA signal.
More info here, and the rest of the pictures are on my photostream. If you are interested in the VHDL source code, please let me know. I will gladly share it with anyone.
Disclaimer: These pictures were edited using Photoshop to increase contrast and in some cases color inversion has been applied. Color inversion was not a feature of this system, but it can be trivially implemented.
