I don't know what to do about the stupid flickr sharpening :(. Makes me want to strangle somebody.
Oh well. The first theme of this year is "new". I was thinking about what to do for a while and in the end I decided to try and somehow depict what happens after Christmas holidays. At least in the western hemisphere. It is kind of scary how right after the, initially religious, tradition that we've managed to turn into a merciless hunt for gifts, all the stores begin the new year with massive sales and people are actually willing to spend their free time greedily hoarding more useless shit. Mayan prophecy or not, we're doomed.
Of course the photo doesn't look anything like what I imagined but at least I made a spectacular show for all the neighbours - dragging a chair to the field and standing there in the wind and drizzle, holding the dresses out like a maniac. (Actually, hehe, that would be my brother, with a cast on his hand to make things more ridiculous. It was really lovely of him to come out and help me :).
And yay, I actually did the theme! :)

We also visited the World Wetland Trust on Saturday which is across the road from Swanbourne Lake. This red breasted goose took umbrage to me being on his path and decided to let me know by 'attacking' my boots.

It took me 2.5 rounds of the Ridgefield auto-route and finally spotted the pair of Bald Eagles. Here are six shots of one of them on 1/15/12 in the field between posts 10 and 11. It is interesting to see the position of the legs in each succeeding shot.

Robin
Robins are one of the only UK birds to be heard singing in the garden on Christmas day. This is because they hold their territories all year round, warning off intruders with song. Males may hold the same territory throughout their lives, and will even attack a bundle of red feathers or their own reflection if they mistake it for another individual.
Their melodious voices, along with their cheeky attitudes, have endeared robin red breasts to the British public, and in 1960 they were crowned the UK's national bird.

I was feeding and photographing some mallards when I heard a hissing sound on my right. I turned to the right and realized that I was just about to get attacked by this Swan.

What a great day. Someones left two pizza's just lying here on the ground. Totally bodacious! This is my take on Baxter - mid transformation (loosely based on the late 80's /early 90's toy)
In 2010 we visited Northumberland for the first time and spend two very enjoyable weeks in May staying near Seahouses. We enjoyed the break so much we visited again in July of that year.
I left with the feeling that I had spent a bit too much time trying to capture images of puffins and overlooked the fantastic terns. With this in mind I was determinted to try and caputure an image that in some way conveys what you are faced with as you walk the path through the tern nesting area. I got a few cuts to the head for my efforts as well as other "gifts" from the terns in taking this shot. I used a wide angled lens to caputure as much activity as possible, this was taken at 24mm on a full frame camera so they were close to the lens.
They are very aggresive birds and fiercly protect the nest site but I must say it does appear to me that they rather enjoy the sport of attacking tourists. It may seem a bit cruel but it seems that the tern chicks stand a better chance of survival if they are reared near the path as they are less likely to be attacked by gulls so perhaps we humans do some good after all.
In one aspect, this is an homage to my new favorite actor, Bruce Campbell. We've recently watched Bubba Ho-tep, Man with the Screaming Brain, and Alien Apocolypse. This weekend we started in on the Evil Dead Trilogy: Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, and Army of Darkness. What can I say, I'm in love and inspired :)
If you love cheesy sci-fi B movies (MST3K fodder), his are spot on! I don't know if they're all meant to be funny, but we find them hilarious :)
In a different light, of course, this could also be taken as an homage to what I awoke to six years ago. I'll take zombies over terrorist attacks anyday...at least the former is only fictional.
