A hapless Australian pelican, Pelecanus conspicillatus had got out of the water onto a mudflat to preen itself. Its toilette got interrupted by a swooping Australian magpie, Gymnorhina tibicen.
Australian magpies often swoop and attack people and other animals during the breeding season. Cyclists and joggers are at particular risk from aggressive magpies. I had seen a magpie in nearby small park chase off two wood ducks but I had never seen the magpie on the mudflat let alone harassing a pelican. What surprised me too is that I often spend time in the small park and magpies will come within a metre of me and show no aggression.

Massive Attack - Daydreaming
I really love modern art and I enjoy going to art galleries and looking at art that was made in my own lifetime especially and, even more so, in the last decade. But, after spending about 3 -4 hours in an art gallery, I start to feel a little overwhelmed because there is just a lot of emotions and processing for me around art and that's when I usually clutch my chest and tell my partner, "I think I'm having an Art Attack!"
An Art Attack is a little less serious than a heart attack but it's just as visceral in terms of the way your heart rate speeds up, you start sweating, and feeling that panic that comes from taking in too much of the world all at once.
Anyway, in Rome it was proper hot and we needed air conditioning so visiting The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporane (also known as La Galleria Nazionale) was a welcome adjustment to body temperature and, as I said before on a different photo, I really enjoyed their Time is Out of Joint exhibit. But, I happened to notice this woman in the distance who was having an Art Attack.
After about twenty minutes of her head in her hands, she recovered enough to keep going but I think we should all learn to take symptoms of an Art Attack more seriously. Don't avoid going to art galleries because of this possibility but perhaps pace yourself! Art holds ideas and emotions and purpose. One's heart can only take so much!

It was another exciting morning out with the Short-eared Owls. When the Harrier came in too close the Owl attacked. It is so interesting to observe their behavior. I believe the Owl Is overwintering in the area for a few months and this is probably the Harrier's normal territory. But it looks like the SE Owl is the aggressor.
The Australian magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) is a medium-sized black and white passerine bird native to Australia and southern New Guinea. Although once considered to be three separate species, it is now considered to be one, with nine recognised subspecies. A member of the Artamidae, the Australian magpie is placed in its own genus and is most closely related to the black butcherbird (Melloria quoyi). Currawongs have yellow eyes, whereas Magpies have red-brown eyes and Butcherbirds have very dark brown, almost black eyes. It is not, however, closely related to the European magpie, which is a corvid. The adult Australian magpie is a fairly robust bird ranging from 37 to 43 cm in length, with distinctive black and white plumage, gold brown eyes and a solid wedge-shaped bluish-white and black bill. The male and female are similar in appearance, and can be distinguished by differences in back markings. The male has pure white feathers on the back of the head and the female has white blending to grey feathers on the back of the head. With its long legs, the Australian magpie walks rather than waddles or hops and spends much time on the ground. Described as one of Australia's most accomplished songbirds, the Australian magpie has an array of complex vocalisations. It is omnivorous, with the bulk of its varied diet made up of invertebrates. It is generally sedentary and territorial throughout its range. Common and widespread, it has adapted well to human habitation and is a familiar bird of parks, gardens and farmland in Australia and New Guinea. This species is commonly fed by households around the country, but in spring (and occasionally in autumn) a small minority of breeding magpies (almost always males) become aggressive and swoop and attack those who approach their nests. This is a Southern Crested Caracara, also known as Carancho, attacking a Black-collared Fishing Hawk that had just caught a nice meal. The hawk dropped the fish which I believe got away. This was a grab shot as I was following the hawk with the camera when the Caracara came out of nowhere.
My husband and I drove into a parking lot near a hiking trail and this yellow warbler showed up. It came closer so I took some pictures of it while sitting in the car. It then started to attack our car. Maybe there was a nest near by or he saw his reflection in the car because he would attack the windows and side mirrors. We decided to move the car a bit but he continued to follow it. Finally we parked on the other side of the street and away a bit.

In the half-light we can breathe,
barefoot on cold sand,
as mountains beckon,
and pull us from land,
into cold embrace,
to live free with pounding hearts,
souls at play,
on the turbulent face.

My mum was savagely attacked by these cute little birds. I couldn’t do anything but take photos of her whilst being ferociously assailed by sweet parakeets.…lol. She had a wonderful time feeding them.
"Hey guys. is that the bloke with the big camera who was insulting us - called us a bunch of galahs?"
"Yeah, that's the fella......let's get him!"
"But, we are actual galahs."
"Yeah, but I didn't like the way he said it.....let's get him anyway!"
"Attack!!!!!"

( For flickr followers outside of Australia, the term galah is often used as a light hearted insult, basically meaning fool or idiot. )
At least I don't have a bullet hole in me. The other person does. I survived.

“Tomorrow” Pose
I've seen Snowy Egrets be aggressive with one another, but it usually was all bluster. Yesterday, I witnessed one physically attack another one.
If you look at this photo in the largest size, you should be able to see the top Snowy with its beak trapping the other Snowy's beak, holding the beak tightly together with its foot.! This is all happening mid-air!
The shot was taken at quite a distance. Fortunately, I had my 500mm lens with my 1.4 teleconverter. It's really a beast to handhold - the teleconverter throws off the weight distribution for me, but I'm so glad I had it to get this shot.

savute plains, a leopard is trying to approach a kudu .
those big cats have a slow approach technique during which a minimal error makes the hunting fail.
a leopard must approach about 10/15 meters from the prey to have a good chance..it then makes a brief and an explosive charge(uo to 60kmh) ,pounching on its prey and dispatching it with bite to the neck.leopards do not have the aptitude to chase their quarry over any kind of distance.many of their preys are faster and can be caught only with an ambush.despite what we think, researchers believe that each individual leopard accounts for 20/40 kills a year.
of course if preys are small or stolen from hyenas and lions they have to hunt much more.
the leopard intraspecific natural enemies are baboons (one of the leopard favorite meal too) ,hyenas and wild dogs can steal them the preys.
but only the male lions can catch and kill easily an adult leopard.
the lion females are used to attack leopards but usually with the purpose to intimidate them.lion females are more tolerant towards other animals not considered as food.
the lion males instead have an instinct that brings them to kill all the possible competitors and they do it.
in savute there are notorius lion prides and leopards must stay always on alert.
anyway the leopard remain maybe the most beautiful african predator ,a deadly form of perfection.
