Mexico-Nuevo Leon, 100-200m., in very restricted area.
A remarkable instance in cacti of geophytism coupled with the elongation of the tubercles (podaria) to serve as succulent 'leaves', parallleled in a less stiking way in Ariocarpus agavoides and by Leuchtenbergia principis, (The New Cactus Lexicon, 2006). This species was in the genus Digitostigma formerly.

2019-07 [8 cm pot] blooming for the first time
This plant was bought from KU (2015-04). Allegedly, a thornless form of Astrohytum capricorne, though it is said that some thorns may appear as the plant grows old. Mine already as a few. Now dead.

This was part of the private collection of cacti and succulents at Manor Nursery, Angmering, West Sussex. The collection was started in 1948. The nursery is now gone. The collection has been dispersed to various new locations.
