Social documentary assignment. No photoshop except a crop. This was a view of Manchester canal / lock early on a Sunday morning. The ancient canal was clogged up with the modern day party rubbish - hen night balloons, halloween items and drink bottles. There was an interesting contrast of the dark canal and lock and the bright balloons.

I was playing around with the titles - nightclub fallout and the ballon about to fall. The word fallout is explosive like the sort of night it probably was.

Also canal lock and "lock up your daughters" -tied in with hen night writing on balloons.

This is not the first time I've shot this fence and it was the first thing I thought of for this assignment.

I really wanted to play with the focal point with a really shallow depth of field. The bokeh was a bonus :)

Another photo for the same school assignment as in "The Watcher". The photographer in this one was Kaj Fagerström.

Ok, I won't say that it is "on theme" but the theme did delay the footing from being poured. Had some rain the day before ("water in motion" from the sky - my theme leap) which delayed them from going in.

Things don't seem to go as planned but at least there is progress.

Workers at the Alta Gracia factory, set up as a "fair wage" factory recently by Knights Apparel, which is one of the largest suppliers of t-shirts and sweatshirts to colleges in the US. This factory is paying workers a living wage, about 3.5 times more than they are paid in other factories clothing factories in the DR.

The clothes are sold at a slightly higher price with tags explaining to customers that Alta Gracia (also the name of the clothing line) pays the workers more.

Let me introduce myself, my name is Jeremy Wall and I seem to have gotten a little stuck on 02 Assignment, the hardest part for me was selecting photographs to post. The photographs I have chosen are a reflection of how I see myself in this world. I find myself distant from this world of mass garbage, ill call it clutter. Right now in my life it is difficult for me to take photos of myself, people, places, and things without there being some sort of unwanted clutter in the background, like a garbage can next to a beautiful tree or a doorknob in the background, this is very frustrating. I am a dreamer and also a doer. In a lot of self portraits I take or when someone else takes a picture of me I always appear mad or upset it is just the way I look, I can’t help it. I am really a nice person and I love helping out other people, it makes me feel good. I love to laugh and if you were to hang out with me I will get you to laugh also, either with me or at me. In this waste land of garbage that seems to engulf everything that is pretty to me, I do my best. I really need to get out of this garbage dump but I am stuck. I adore the beach, but I can’t find anyone that wants to go. The only form of transportation I have is my beach cruiser and public transportation, my beach cruiser is too long for VTA busses. I need to get a tripod, park benches and stacking candles is not working for me. I also have a really hard time with computers, I will admit. I have a lot of love in my soul, nothing will ever ruin that.

This is my lame submission for this week assignment but I'm struggling this week to get something. :/

Assignment 52: Panning

This one struck me funny, with a close crop.

Persduaded my mother-in-law to sit in for this assignment. Thought it would lift her mood up a bit, she's been feeling rather blue these past few weeks - and it did! She got a big kick out the the "portrait with a finger raised" bit... ;)

Shot tethered, using a 131DD on top of a dollied tripod. Tethering made it easy for her to "click" when she took my shots.

Strobist info:

3 x 580EX II's in total, on manual. Close in, so I can keep f11 for decent depth-of-field.

Key is camera right, shot through a home-made beauty-dish, the 580EX II-adapted New Zealand equivalent to David X. Tejada's contraption - davidtejada.blogspot.com/2008/04/beauty-dish-for-sb-800.html

The background-light is gridded + 2xCTB, magic-armed to the rail at the back, one stop below key.

The edge/fill-light camera left is tightly gridded, two stops below key, just to bring out the shadow side a bit.

Set-up shot available in the Bootcamp II set.

Assignment 3 Abstract "Virah Varsaad no"

The way I decided to approach this assignment was to play with different camera angles/ lighting. I asked myself "How can I make simple everyday items appear more interesting?" I also captured a mess from a project I have been working on for senior portfolio. I wanted to focus on getting the depth while still keeping the focus on certain objects. I chose this space because it is my main living space. I am always working, eating, or getting ready in these spaces. I made my photographs simply by playing with camera angles. I want the viewer to see a simple space at more than the basic perspective.

Assignment 52: Cropping

I took this photo specifically for the assignment, & realized how carelessly composed it was, since I knew I'd be cropping it. Realized later that the dof wasn't good for so broad a scene. The sky was blown out, & some of the background bokeh unattractive. The cropping narrowed the photo to a few well-focused blooms, in a composition pleasing to my eye.

Assignments from an online class - Gesture Drawing at Schoolism - taught by Pixar Story Artist, Alex Woo.

Taken for Active Assignment Weekly for the week of August 18-25th.

The assignment:

This week I would like you to take an item from inside your house, which normally doesn’t leave your house, and photograph it outside.

Restriction: no chairs, tables or food implements because they can be used outside.

Dare: show us something really unusual and creative.

Importantly have fun and try not to break anything :-)

WIT: It was raining for a few days straight (which is no longer typical for Colorado) so I took this painting of a mediterranean seaside village and placed it out in my yard. I liked the contrast of what was going on in Denver and what is protrayed in the painting.

To get this angle my head was braced on the porch roof!! Standing on ladder with hubby holding ladder securely, second rung from the top...shaky legs!!!

my wanna be actress daughter was my model for this assignment.

Even though I might look like I know what I'm doing, I'm actually still relatively new to editing. An advanced beginner might be more fitting than just beginner since I already have some ideas on how to edit photography previously. So for this image, I used Pixlr. I used the crop tool and used the bushes on both sides as my guide on where to crop. I also covered the screen window with black brush to create less distraction. Then I used some adjustment to get better lighting in the photo. After all that, I feel like this edited photo looks more vivid and and a little bit more detailed than before.

Taken with a P&S on automatic with the flash against a very bright background, no composition and with various bits & pieces left on the benches. SOOC, no post processing.

I (left) asked a close friend (right) to help me out with this assignment. He couldn't manually focus well on the 50mm prime, so I slapped him upside the head and switched to an autofocus lens for my portrait. Although, to be fair, I couldn't nail the focus on the prime half the time. The orchids we had for lunch were delicious though.

I used Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo x2 to edit this picture. I've never used any photo editing program before so I found it to be challenging. I had posted the original of this in a previous assignment saying how I'd enhance it. Well, this is the final attempt. It was a very dull, washed out original photo so I adjusted the brightness by using curves. I mostly left the top alone but gave more saturation to the grass and water area. I also sharpened it some which really helps Mt. Hood to stand out. Lastly I cropped out part of the sky and that not-so-pleasing-to-the-eye concrete barrier on the bottom. I feel it helps capture how beautiful the PNW can be when it's not raining! That blue strip in the middle is a bit distracting and I was trying to tone it down but had no idea how to, unfortunately. Overall, I don't think it came out that terribly. (Unless you're comparing it to the other's photos on here. They are all amazing so far! You all are very talented.)
