Taken for Active Assignment Weekly: Clouds
First of all, let me thank gfpeck for coming up with this assignment idea. I would have to say that prior to Saturday morning when it had either been completely overcasted or completely clear skys that I was not very happy with this assignment.
Saturday morning, however, turned into one of my best picture taking learning experiences ever. Bare with me, this is going to get a little wordy, but hpping you can relate to it as a fellow picture taker.
It all started at 6:30am. Went out in hopes of catching some interesting clouds only to see blankets of cloud overhead. Not hopeful. At around 6:45am, I noticed that the wind picked up to around 30 miles per hour which started to stir the clouds a bit. At the same time, I could tell that the sunrise was trying to fight it's way through the think sheets of clouds. Before I knew it, the wind started to break up the clouds significantly causing the scenery to change all around me. On the one hand, the sun rays were beaming through the clouds, on the other hand, the clouds behind and to the side of me were receiving pinkish light from the sunrise. We had our share of dark clouds too. It became a cloud wonderland.
I had my tripod set up (for a change) and found myself turning everywhich way to catch a picture. I'm learning about RAW images and exposure, so with every scene, I experimented with different shutter speeds and just thoroughly enjoyed how the results differed with every exposure change. With the wind blowing hard, the scenery, lighting, and colors, even changed between exposure adjustments. Nothing stayed still for me to shoot for more than a minute (crazy, but fun). In under 60 minutes, I got to watch the clouds dance between the sun and the light that it produced. Magnificent.
I couldn't believe I ended up snapping over 250 shots in raw (luckily I have a large memory card). I struggled with which 2 pictures to submit. There were other pictures that I took which were more focused on light. I ended up submitting to AAW pictures that emphsized the clouds. I've posted a mosaic of those pictures to share here (if interested).

WIT: Converted from RAW to Jpeg. Increased "black" and contrast to intensify gradient effect.
The brief for PwDP Assignment Five is, apparently, oriented towards photojournalism - photograph an event and market the results to relevant publications. This series is my own response. The background is in my blog, here - stansocapwdp.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Assignment Five.
It relates to a major sporting 'event' of the summer - The Ashes Test Series of cricket matches between England & Australia - but also to my research of contemporary still life photography for Assignment Four; questions around the way photographers might respond to image-saturation in the digital/internet world; and maybe questions around the 'truth' of photographic images. The intended outcome is a series of large prints but, hopefully, these digital versions provide some sense of what is intended.
Just putzing with camera...to see how well I can hand hold.....cannot say it was going well...then I saw this!
Italian Treasures. Took a photo of a Sardinian beer that we loved when living in Italy, and chose one of the ink drawings we picked up in Rome as the background to the beer. I like the red contrast on the cap.

OK, so I'm doing this course on photography, hoping to take things back to basics and hopefully learn something. This is my image for assignment 2, which asks you to take an image of something from around your house in an artistic way. Not sure about how arty this is, but I like it. If you're interested, this is one of the ornamental elephants from the Elephant Parade charity.
the assignment was to take 3 photos with the same theme. I don't like the other 2 much so this is all you get, the theme was Decay.

This week we were asked to shoot a person in really low-light situations using a high ISO. Things get pretty noisy, especially with a D40. My friend Alex and I went to a few different locations looking for interesting lights, and this is what we came up with. Let me know what you think!
After a long and hard two weeks, I am getting my head back on straight after dealing with several family emergencies. I'm late but I am catching up and plan to be ahead from here on out! I saw in the last tutorial where the compositions are put together that you did the zig zag, the wiggle, and the circle, but I also rendered out and uploaded the animating text on a path, and animating text as shape layers as well. Thank you for everything! flic.kr/s/aHsmWArBoM
Assignment 52: Cropping
I took this photo specifically for the assignment, & realized how carelessly composed it was, since I knew I'd be cropping it. Realized later that the dof wasn't good for so broad a scene. The sky was blown out, & some of the background bokeh unattractive. The cropping narrowed the photo to a few well-focused blooms, in a composition pleasing to my eye.
Active Assignment Weekly: 21-28 May 2018: In One Place
Spec: PIck a spot, and shoot 25 pictures (not in burst mode). You cannot move your feet once you've chosen your spot, but you can crouch, stretch, or move your body on any way to get the shot. It's a photographer's version of the game Twister, so I guess yoga experts may have an advantage here, haha! Try to shoot different subjects, or use different angles or lenses to shoot. Once you have your 25 shots, pick the best 2 and upload for the assignment. Restrictions: None, except as noted in the assignment. Dare: Pick a place indoors to take your pictures.
WIT: There is a nice Poinsettia tree in the grounds of our office base. Cropped and a small contrast tweak. One view up and one view of the ground with dead Poinsettia leaves.

Active Assignment Weekly: July 4 - July 11: Hit the gym
Time to get active! Your assignment is to photograph people (or a person) exercising. Running, lifting weights, swimming ... there are many great ways to work out, so pick your favorite.
Dare: Get an unusual perspective on your subject ... try to show something unique about the activity that you love.
Restrictions (2): Photos must be submitted in black and white. Photos should portray someone in the act of exercising, not just posing and "looking fit."
wit: a humid ride in Kolopore Forest, nearly (or maybe) breaking my leg, and some pals. for some reason exif data didnt import, 50mm, f2, iso 1600, de-saturated in gimp, uploaded to Flikr, frozen peas on my leg.
Assignment: Shutter Speed: For this picture, I used a fast shutter speed so the photo would be in focus. Then I had to turn up my ISO so the picture would be brighter.
04 Concerned Photography
My subject is concern about wasting of plastic bags. Everybody knows plastic bag. It costs only a little money and makes our lives much easier. When the photographer Alexander Parkes did the experiment with collodium in his dark room, he could never imagine how big the changes he would bring to the world. That’s the invention of plastic, an accidental found during a experiment in the dark room. On the other hand, I believe he could not imagine how people abuse this great invention now either.
Plastic bags do bring us many conveniences. However, before we use it we should realize how many plastic bags we are wasting everyday and how much negative influence it would be. In the states, there are about 400 plastic bags used per second. Only 1 percent to 3 percent are ever recycled. According to Californians Against Waste, “an estimated 33 million to 103 million dollars is spent each year to manage plastic bag litter in our state.” It supposed to be reusable, but people seldom really reuse it. Because it takes 100 years for the plastic bags to be decomposed completely, plastic bags can pose a serious danger to our nature. They spoil the landscape, danger to birds and animals because they often think they are food. It becomes one of the most challenging to the environmental protection.
The only people who can save us are ourselves. Stop wasting plastic bags. Begin to use recycle bags. And make our environment better.

Active Assignment Weekly Jan 3-Jan 10: Wheels
Assignment:
Wheels make the world go ‘round. For this assignment you are to capture the essence of this wonder of invention and seek out the wheels that make your world turn.
Restriction: To add some challenge, NO wheels that are intended to carry vehicles (cars, trucks, bikes, wagons, trains, etc.) are allowed.
WIT: camera on the tripod , staged the mouse on my kitchen table with a book behind to add a background, SB600 on the right splashed off the wall. A bit of balancing in gimp
I think we take the mouse scroll wheel for granted, imagine a world without it....
Assignment 52 - Vanishing point
This cemetery is well-known for the graves of Emma Goldman & other political activists on "Anarchists' Row." I'd hoped to use those for this assignment, but true to their reputation, their graves don't line up neatly in parallel rows. So this was taken elsewhere in the cemetery.
