Depth of field assignment - B

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND - August 27: Old Boys football match at Scots College August 27, 2016 in Wellington, New Zealand. (Photo by Mark Tantrum/ www.scotscollege.school.nz/)

OK, so I'm doing this course on photography, hoping to take things back to basics and hopefully learn something. This is my image for assignment 2, which asks you to take an image of something from around your house in an artistic way. Not sure about how arty this is, but I like it. If you're interested, this is one of the ornamental elephants from the Elephant Parade charity.

Active Assignment Weekly: Liquid in Motion

The Assignment:

For those of you who don’t like set-up, this will challenge you a bit, but I promise it’ll be fun and hopefully a good learning experience that will stretch your photography journey. I first learned about the relationship between lighting conditions, flash, aperture, and shutter speed when trying to shoot my son’s baseball games. Those learnings then extended to shooting water movement whether it was a water fight or shooting one of those cool water splash shots.

The Assignment : Shoot a picture that captures liquid of any type frozen in motion. It can be taken indoors or outdoors. The liquid amount can be a drop or a wave-full and the movement can be accompanied by any object or living being. Depending on the speed of your lens (i.e. shutter speed at a given aperture or vice versa) and availability of flash, you may consider taking the shot in outdoor lighting. Using a tripod will help immensely.

Restrictions: None, except no fabrication of liquid movement in post processing.

Dare: If you have not tried a water splash type shot before, I dare you to get that under your belt.

WIT: After reading of the hours you folks had spent on yours, the heckling neighbors, the broken flashes, even the wife driving full speed at the photographer, I decided to play it safe and go with what I knew. So, after assuring that the toilet was exceedingly clean, I flushed. I did use a tripod and shot in shutter priority...both outside of my norm. I also learned how to perform continuous burst shooting and played around with a halogen work light to adjust lighting. Then in PSE, I played with levels (on color...also new to me) and chrome filters, blue filters, and finally, a violet filter. The norm: adjust contrast, sharpness, and saturation. I applaud you splashers! It's been fun to see what you all presented! Maybe next time for me!

Assignment 52: Cropping

I took this photo specifically for the assignment, & realized how carelessly composed it was, since I knew I'd be cropping it. Realized later that the dof wasn't good for so broad a scene. The sky was blown out, & some of the background bokeh unattractive. The cropping narrowed the photo to a few well-focused blooms, in a composition pleasing to my eye.

Assignment-3

porch stories ( @don hill station )

First assignment in my digital photography class. We had to try and mimic William Eggleston's style.

Space exploration represents humanity's boundless curiosity, testing both technological limits and the resilience of the human spirit. To venture beyond Earth, astronauts face rigorous physical, mental, and emotional boundaries. The vast unknown demands a readiness to endure isolation, confront fears, and navigate the risk of the unknown—all in pursuit of discovery. These explorers push the boundaries of endurance, continually expanding what we believe possible. Every mission reflects our collective determination to seek knowledge, explore further, and redefine human potential. Each launch embodies the spirit of crossing boundaries, striving for a future where the stars feel within reach.

Active Assignment Weekly: 21-28 May 2018: In One Place

Spec: PIck a spot, and shoot 25 pictures (not in burst mode). You cannot move your feet once you've chosen your spot, but you can crouch, stretch, or move your body on any way to get the shot. It's a photographer's version of the game Twister, so I guess yoga experts may have an advantage here, haha! Try to shoot different subjects, or use different angles or lenses to shoot. Once you have your 25 shots, pick the best 2 and upload for the assignment. Restrictions: None, except as noted in the assignment. Dare: Pick a place indoors to take your pictures.

WIT: There is a nice Poinsettia tree in the grounds of our office base. Cropped and a small contrast tweak. One view up and one view of the ground with dead Poinsettia leaves.

Swarali Photo Assignment (November, 2015)

This photo fills the requirements for the assignment of portraits. After a lot of trial-and-error, I finally was able to get a nicely done portrait. This picture was modeled after a photo I had previously seen. It's fairly simple but it turned out nicely. When I took this picture I had my sister sit down so I could angle the camera above her. Before editing, it had a very blue tint to it. So I tried to make it look warmer. I also attempted to clean up face because it was changing colors due to the cold weather. I like this picture but if I could change it, I would have warmed it up a little more and made her eyes brighter. Overall, I think the photo is very nice.

Me, also processed in Lightroom and CS2 to get a decent B&W.

Assignment: Shutter Speed: For this picture, I used a fast shutter speed so the photo would be in focus. Then I had to turn up my ISO so the picture would be brighter.

Assignment 52: Cropping

This is a pedestrian-bicycle bridge, & I originally took the photo while waiting for a bicycle to come by, the week of the Bicycle Assignment. Had hoped to duplicate for the Sunburst Assignment, but the lighting conditions weren't amenable. So am recycling now, taking advantage of Max's indulgence to work on cropping an older photo.

I cropped the clutter of foliage & dark space on the right & some of the foliage underneath the bridge, tilting the image to emphasize the diagonal.

The brief for PwDP Assignment Five is, apparently, oriented towards photojournalism - photograph an event and market the results to relevant publications. This series is my own response. The background is in my blog, here - stansocapwdp.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Assignment Five.

It relates to a major sporting 'event' of the summer - The Ashes Test Series of cricket matches between England & Australia - but also to my research of contemporary still life photography for Assignment Four; questions around the way photographers might respond to image-saturation in the digital/internet world; and maybe questions around the 'truth' of photographic images. The intended outcome is a series of large prints but, hopefully, these digital versions provide some sense of what is intended.

Oriental Magpie Robin

Mosaic of images I submitted to the Color week group.

Gold was the color chosen for Sunday; as you can see, I got a little carried away.

It was fun being on assignment!

Your assignment is to capture the essence of fire and not damage your house like Redgum did when he did a similar assignment four years ago.

Restriction:Fire must be a part of the image..No smoke and mirrors..

WIT

Straight out of the camera. dark rainy night and a pyro fireman eager to volunteer :)

Assignment 52 -- Bokeh, & how to use it as an element in composition, with out of focus background appearing where & how we want, supporting the main subject without overpowering it.

I took a number of shots from different angles, mindful of where the yellow & purple asters were behind the poppy.

And of course, I couldn't resist taking some shots of my favorite subject with bokeh:

Assignment 52 - Vanishing point

This cemetery is well-known for the graves of Emma Goldman & other political activists on "Anarchists' Row." I'd hoped to use those for this assignment, but true to their reputation, their graves don't line up neatly in parallel rows. So this was taken elsewhere in the cemetery.

My tearsheet assignment inspiration pages. My inspiration shot that got me thinking and ultimately made is the lemon picture in the bottom right.
