Active Assignment Weekly, February 14-21: Portraits
Portrait in the loosest sense of the word. Candid or posed, this week's assignment should be a portrait of a child or adult, male or female. Just remember to keep it family friendly.
Restriction: No studio shots. Must be taken outdoors. *amended
Dare: Make it of someone you don't know before you take the shot.
Without my DSLR for a while longer, so here goes...
WIT: Borrowed the P/S while at dinner (didn't do the dare; this is our son), on Program mode because I'm still learning what this camera can do. CS4 conversion to black and white (green filter), curves for getting the semi- 'high key' effect, minor cloning out blemishes, sharpened, resized, added the border.
On assignment for Canned Creative, capturing images for a corporate website. The challenge here, was that although the unit is beautiful, with great finishes, the home has been simply furnished and was not dressed for photography. It was agreed that in future a unit will be dressed, so that the dream can be captured adequately.
Journal spread prompted by assignment #2 over at Wreck This Journal -- I drew on the left-hand page with a white crayon, then blotted a tea-bag on the page a few times to give the page some color. Then, I drew/collaged on top of it. There's a secret picture drawn in crayon under there....can you see it?

The Assignment: Minimal natural color: Color is beautiful, but photos with a minimum of color can be fascinating as well. The assignment this week is to take a photograph with minimal color; to let the composition control the scene– the votes will be the judge on how well you did.
Restriction: No desaturation in post-processing. You must find the minimal color in the subject.
Dare: Don’t rely on concrete to be the majority of the photograph.
WIT: Hand-held shot of duct work found in the house. F/2.8, 1/60 sec, ISO 1000. Needed the flash (on camera) to keep the metal grain in focus(-2 EV with a piece of paper held against it). CS4 rotated, cropped, curves for contrast, sharpened, resize.

History
This little area of my bookshelf has most of the textbooks, books, and notebooks from school and I always love looking back on it. It reminds me of moments I had in class and all the times I struggled but also all the fun moments I had with classmates. Sometimes when I'm struggling with classes I look at this and remember that if I made it through some of these classes, I can always keep pushing on.
