314/366: Lost Among The Trees | Aspen + Pine
Another version of my ‘Lost Among The Trees’ series this time featuring the Aspen Trees and Pine Trees in Colorado during the fall season. I love in this photo how the trees share the land, they share the resources, they share the good and the bad – they are cohesive in their journey for happiness and kindness. They don’t judge and they don’t hate – they choose to live together, peacefully and in friendship. Shading each other from the pain, from the negative and from the heat. They choose to shine in their differences and thrive in harmony with Mother Earth.

An aspen tree trunk in the mountains of Colorado. I've always found the textures, colors, and cracks on aspen trees to be aesthetically pleasing and unique.

Shooting aspens in full sunlight can be a challenge. This one needed some processing, and I discovered that reducing the clarity and bumping the contrast....and tonemapping from from there works well with these aspen shots...all IMO of course;-) This shot is from a family trip to Tahoe a few weeks ago. The Taylor Creek area, although fairly crowded, is a beautiful place to visit in October. Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think!
I went back and looked at some of the images I shot last month up in the Bishop area. This is actually one of the earliest ones. It's a blend of two long exposures. There actually was some color on the shore -- I was able to bring it out with the shorter of the two exposures, 15 seconds and 8 seconds. I had a third exposure -- 11 seconds, but I didn't use it in the blend.
The dark spot in the corner is from the way I had the ND grad situated in front of the lens. I think it was a 3-stop, which was probably a stop too dark.
Anyway, I've whined enough about not finding any color on the trip to Eastern Sierra. It was definitely there.
I know its winter, but still getting around to my Colorado photos from couple months back. I'm from the East (NJ), so our autumns are full of many different colors. Beautiful to see. But when i saw the Colorado Aspens in autumn for the first time 3yrs ago, I was blown away. An amazing sight to see. Was driving along the highway heading somewheres (think we were heading towards Pikes Peak area from Boulder), when we came across this huge patch of Gold/Orange/Yellow that went on and on.....There must have been at least another 50cars pulled over doing the same thing....
Photo just does not do it any justice. Not even close............
This was my first visit to the Boulder Brook area of Rock Mountain National Park and I'm already excited to go back! I love the scene of a neatly confined bustling creek flowing through the middle of the forest. In fact, I think I'm going back tomorrow morning. I'm trying to get out there and explore a little more of Rock Mountain NP while there is still some good weather to be had.
More photos from RMNP can be found here. Thanks for viewing!

How cool that just as I snapped this a breeze blew a bunch of Aspen leaves down from the tree tops!
The hike on West Chicago Creek travels through a dense Aspen and Lodge Pole Pine forest. The Lodge Pole's are the very straight and tall, skinny pines. The lower portion of the trail is relatively easy, but the terrain gets very rocky and steep as you progress. At the summit is an area called Hell's Hole, where you can see mountain peaks and valleys surrounding you. It's quite breathtaking! But it
sure is **** to get there!

And this is why John Muir called it the "range of light." Once in a great, great while, everything comes together for a shot--this was one of those rare evenings. Golden aspens? Check. Sierra granite crags with snowfields? Check. Fiery sunset sky? Check. I've wanted a shot like this for a long time.
This is near the road to Lake Sabrina, not too far past Aspendell. Incredibly, my SO and I were the only ones in this area shooting this scene. You can see one of his shots (from a slightly different perspective) here.
209/366: Williams Creek Reservoir Colorado – Panorama
A panoramic view of Williams Creek Reservoir in Colorado. This is a 4 stitch photograph. While the family ate lunch up at the picnic tables, I went on a small adventure down closer to the lake and found this fantastic view. The wooden fence on the left of the photograph brings the viewer right into the majestic San Juan mountain range. As you follow the mountains you will find Williams Creek Reservoir. The sky was brilliantly blue and I was blessed with the rolling white puffy clouds flowing off the mountain range. The valley grasslands shined with a vibrant green so soft on your toes it tickled to walk through.
This photo was shot with my Lee Filters circular polarizer.

Thanks to all who viewed, commented and faved, I appreciate it.
While making the front page briefly, I'm not sure what position it achieved and can only attest to the highest known position from BigHugeLabs Scout. Many thanks to rev_adan for the news and the screenshot he added to the comment section below.

During the return walk from Crater Lake I had to stop for this view overlooking Maroon Bells with the morning light highlighting all the aspens in their autumn splendor. In the distance is Highland Peak at 12,326 ft.
This was the only morning of this short Colorado trip with bright sunlight . . . but what a morning it was!
This panorama is a stitch of multiple images.

Sticking with the monochromatic theme here. I may re-process this one in color. I am open to suggestions. Thanks!

Going back through some photos from September, I found this one from Aspen that I had missed. I kinda like it :)
Near Oxbow Bend, Grand Teton National Park, WY
It was day 3 of our photo tour and we thought to pay Oxbow Bend another visit in the hope of getting some reflections and a clear view of Mount Moran. On the way there we briefly stopped before reaching the bend to shoot Mount Moran with the Aspen Trees in the foreground - at least I think those are Aspens.
This is a pano of two shots stitched together. I have to get a new stitching program as mine can't even handle two files taken with the 5D Mark II. Last year I thought it's the computer, but I don't think so - Win 7, 64-bit i7 processor and 8GB RAM should do the trick.

Location - Aspen, Colorado
Discovered this little tarn while exploring some of the back roads with vix227. It was a beautiful scene with the golden aspen trees and mountains reflecting in the tarn.

I love fall, if you've seen the rest of my collection you'd know that immediately, but my second favorite aspen tree season is SPRING! Seeing those unmistakable bright, yellow-green leaves, always seems to make me smile. There were beautiful springtime aspens as far down this road as you wanted to go, around every bend and deep into the forest. I went as far as I could; walking miles and miles down this road called Aspen Loop in the San Juan National Forest near Mancos, Colorado.

Moods of Autumn
I always feel so fortunate when the fall weather provides clouds, fog and snow. Here is just a sample of what I experienced in the Southern Colorado San Juan mountains.
