Arty Smokes with his camera in Southend. I've had this film in my lomo coloursplash since last summer and have only just got it developed - had forgotten what was on it.

Picture taken on July 30th 2014.

Friday was a straightforward fine day, spectacular in fact.

The weather, the photographic opportunities and a brief visit to a small town that we had ignored for too long. We also found a couple of unique items in an up-market junk shop. Both were the classic discoveries in a dusty corner of a backroom, un-appreciated by the shop's owner. My wife knew what she had found immediately and we later confirmed it at home, astonishing. Nothing as spectacular for my find, just something appealing to my eye that will be used immediately.

We did not buy what we had gone out to buy ironically!

Returning to a much favoured in-camera technique after a long break from it.

This heavily post-processed version of one of my ink drawings radically changes its subject matter and impact. Yet both versions work well.

Most people add "best viewed large" to their photos but I was tempted to add "best viewed small" to this one. I would not normally upload such a soft picture but there was something arty and appealing about it (well, to me anyway). Added to that, Hawfinches are scarce, elusive birds in Britain, and most photos are from known stake-outs. I was driving down the lanes in South Cumbria when I chanced upon two Hawfinches flying up from the road. When I came back down the road several hours later they were there again. I returned early next morning and managed a couple of photographs but in appalling light, and in the rain. And this was the result. This was the male, showing a white tail-tip and the enormous bill capable of cracking cherry stones. Its scientific name Coccothraustes means kernel-cracker.

Jill's turn to be in the pictures..!
