Screeched to a halt for this weird weather phenomenon! It created a surreal effect, even better in the flesh.
If you visit the Farne Islands to see the puffins you have to first of all walk the gauntlet of the artic terns which nest right up to and occasionally on the pathway.
They are very protective and attack with vicious pecks to the head. I was fortunate to have been forewarned by my good friend and ornithologist Sudi of Newcastle CC..
Forewarned is forearmed as they say and being in the trade I donned a builders hard hat that served me well as I suffered numerous attacks without damage.
June is the time to visit as it coincides with the breeding season.
