Zanesville sent a steamer pumper, two hand pumpers, 1,200 feet of hose and thirty-six men. Local residents furnished 136 meals to the Zanesville fire fighters alone during the three days which elapsed before the inferno finally was controlled.
Among properties destroyed at this time were the warehouse and wool room of William Rainey, Burgess tin shop, and the residence of C. C. McIlyar, D. M. Jenkins, Fred Williams, Mrs. John Cook, Patrick Cain, along with the old Bonnell home. A new two story brick house where the Denny Brothers Shop stood, also was destroyed.
The total amount of insurance on the buildings destroyed was one thousand dollars and insurance agents soon were plastering their company heralds on the still smoldering ruins. The result of the fire was the construction of better buildings and the organization of the Cambridge Fire Department.
THE FIRST FIRE DEPARTMENT
After the great fire of 1873 the people of Cambridge were aroused and demanded better fire protection under an organized command. On July 21, 1873, Council authorized purchase of a new Silsby steam fire engine, along with a hook and ladder wagon, two hose reels and 600 feet of fire hose. City Council also authorized the construction of cisterns for the water supply to fight fires, all to be bought with bonds amounting to nine thousand dollars.
On August 12, 1873, construction of four cisterns to be built by P. Greer Company got underway, the largest one was located southeast of the monument in front of the Courthouse, with a capacity of eighty thousand gallons of water, the others were located at Fourth Street and Steubenville Avenue, Eleventh and Steubenville Avenue, and Tenth Street and Wheeling Avenue.
These cisterns were of the greatest importance, because these were the days before fire hydrants and a water system, and the fire department depended upon these for their water supply in fighting fires.
When there was a major fire or a need for water the department would pull the steam engine close to the cistern and with the use of a four inch hard rubber hose, draft the water needed and pump it directly to the fire or to a hand pumper closer to the fire.
FIRE OF 1891
At two o'clock Saturday afternoon, November 21, 1891, fire broke out in the Taylor block adjoining the old Berwick Hotel, Flames were pouring out of the attic over the C&M Railroad Offices, and the furniture store of McDonald and McCullum, and firemen soon exhausted cisterns and wells near the fire. A hose was stretched from the fire to a 1,000 barrel cistern at the Courthouse but this burst causing a delay. Following this fire in 1891 a movement was started for a system of water mains in Cambridge, and better fire fighting equipment but it would take another confraguration before this would come about.
