The Postcard
A postally unused postcard bearing no publisher's name. The card, which has a divided back, was printed in Great Britain.

Sky Fire 2010 in Canberra. Apparently there were around 160,000 people who made the trip in to the show. It was definitely worth the effort.
Colour, colour & more colour!
Many years ago, as a school child, to find some answers to questions I had about old street lighting, I wrote to Stanton plc as Stanton Ironworks had become. Stanton Ironworks, near Nottingham, had become one of the UK's main manufacturers of street lighting columns - not in steel as may have been expected but in the new 1930s technology of spun concrete street lighting columns and brackets. They continued in business with a variety of styles and designs up into the 1980s when concrete standards went 'out of fashion'. This was largely due to the fact that when hit, concrete columns do not deflect and so inflict damage to vehicles and occupants - as this catalogue shows but making a point here about the fact their columns would stand such a passing blow.
Concrete lamp standards became popular due to several factors; initial cost and a seeming lack of maintenance was one as unlike steel columns these did not require painting on a regular basis. Another was architectural fashion and design; concrete could be moulded into so many shapes and forms and some eraly bracket designs were fanciful to the point of becoming ridiculed in the world of industrial design. This afflicted Stanton less than their great rival, Concrete Utilities of Ware, whose early works were quite something to behold! By the 1950s design had swung back to simplicity and utilty and Stanton's designs, like others, would mirror this shift. In addition the technology of production was better understood and so manufacturing became more economical in terms of materials. These were the inner steel wire and sections used to tension or stress the column with the concrete centrifugally spun around the 'outline' of the column in a mold.
In response to my childhood letter some kindly soul at Stanton photocopied pages from this earlier catalogue dating to around 1950; there are mentions of wartime damage to installations and the designs are before the early/mid 1950s simplification of columns and brackets that would be marketed as Stanton 8's and 9's. These are scans of photocopies and so can be a bit blurry but I think they are of enough interest to post here.
I have posted some single pages from this catalogue earlier and may now delete these older scans. These pages show an installation of Type 1 columns for side street (type B) lighting. The column could be fitted with a metal bracket from another manufacturer (such as Revo seen here with one of their lanterns) or with the Stanton 7A bracket. This was a very popular style of installtion and the one seen here newr Nottingham is lighting a footpath outside some post-war 'prefab' houses by the look of it.

The explaination is very simple.
Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.
ShareAlike ā anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
