Ernest-Louis-Aquilas Christophe
(b Loches, Indre-et-Loire, 15 Jan 1827; d Paris, 14 Jan 1892). French sculptor. He studied under Francois Rude, whom he assisted in the execution of the tomb of Godefroy de Cavaignac (1845-7; Paris, Montmartre Cemetery). In a relatively small number of works, which often took many years to complete, Christophe rendered in sculpture literary conceits usually derived from contemporary poets. In his turn he provided subjects for Le Masque and Danse macabre from Charles Baudelaire's Fleurs du mal, the former being inspired by Christophe's allegorical statue The Human Comedy or The Mask (c. 1859; marble, exh. Salon 1876; Paris, Mus. d'Orsay). The effect of this statue changes according to viewpoint, a smiling mask concealing from certain angles the figure's own anguished head. It was followed by a more conventional piece, Fate (bronze; Bagneres-de-Luchon, Jard. Pub.), first conceived around 1875 and exhibited at the Salon of 1890; this anachronistic-looking allegory, whose iconography was taken from verses by Charles-Marie-Rene Leconte de Lisle, was intended as a reflection on Darwin's theory of evolution. Christophe's last work, The Sphinx or The Supreme Kiss (marble; Le Mans, Mus. B.-A.), exhibited posthumously at the Salon of 1892, shows a young man in a terminal embrace with a sphinx or chimera. Christophe's own grave in the Batignolles Cemetery is marked by a reduced version of his massive figure of Grief, which had been shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1855.
God created the world out of nothing; this is the teaching of the Semitic theologies, and by it they answer the following difficulty: if God had made the world out of a preexisting substance, that substance must be either itself created, or else Divine. The creation is not God, it cannot therefore emanate from Him; there is an unbridgeable hiatus between God and the world, neither can become the other; the orders of magnitude or of reality, or of perfection, are incommensurable.
The main concern of this reasoning is not a disinterested perception of the nature of things, but the safeguarding of a simple and unalterable notion of God, while making allowance for a mentality that is more active than contemplative. The aim is therefore to provide, not a metaphysical statement that does not engage the will or does not appear to do so, but a key notion calculated to win over souls rooted in willing and acting rather than in knowing and contemplating; the metaphysical limitation is here a consequence of the priority accorded to what is effective for the governing and saving of souls. That being so, one is justified in saying that Semitic religious thought is by force of circumstances a kind of dynamic thought with moral overtones, and not a static thought in the style of the Greek or Hindu wisdom.
From the point of view of the latter, the idea of emanation, in place of creatio ex nihilo, in no way compromises either the transcendence or the immutability of God; between the world and God there is at once discontinuity and continuity, depending on whether our conception of the Universe is based on a scheme of concentric circles or on one of radii extending outward from the center to the periphery: according to the first mode of vision, which proceeds from the created to the Uncreated, there is no common measure between the contingent and the Absolute; according to the second mode of vision, which proceeds from the Principle to its manifestation, there is but one Real, which includes everything and excludes only nothingness, precisely because the latter has no reality whatsoever. The world is either a production drawn from the void and totally other than God, or else it is a manifestation "freely necessary" and "necessarily free" of Divinity or of Its Infinitude, liberty as well as necessity being Divine perfections.
As tor the contention that the creationist concept is superior to the so-called emanationist or pantheistic concepts because it is Biblical and Christ-given, and that the Platonic doctrine cannot be right because Plato cannot be superior either to Christ or the Bible, this has the fault of leaving on one side the real fundamentals of the problem.
First, what is rightly or wrongly called "emanationism" is not an invention of Plato, it can be found in the most diverse sacred texts; second, Christ, while being traditionally at one with the creationist thesis, nevertheless did not teach it explicitly and did not deny the apparently opposed thesis. The message of Christ, like that of the Bible, is not a priori a teaching of metaphysical science; it is above all a message of salvation, but one that necessarily contains, in an indirect way and under cover of an appropriate symbolism, metaphysics in its entirety. The opposition between the Divine Bible and human philosophy, or between Christ and Plato, therefore has no meaning so far as the metaphysical truths in question are concerned; that the Platonic perspective should go farther than the Biblical perspective brings no discredit on the Bible, which teaches what is useful or indispensable from the point of view of the moral or spiritual good of a particular humanity, nor does it confer any human superiority on the Platonists, who may be mere thinkers just as they may be saints, according to how much they assimilate of the Truth they proclaim.
For the Platonists it is perfectly logical that the world should be the necessary manifestation of God and that it should be without origin; if the monotheistic Semites believe in a creation out of nothing and in time, it is evidently not, as some have suggested, because they think that they have the right or the privilege of accepting a "supralogical" thesis that is humanly absurd; for the idea of creation appears to them on the contrary as being the only one that is reasonable and therefore the only one that is capable oflogical demonstration, as is proved precisely by tlfe method of argumentation used in theology.
Starting from the axiom that God created the worldout of nothing, the Semites reason thus, grosso modo: since God alone has Being, the world could not share it with Him; there had there fore to be a time when the world did not exist; it is God alone who could give it existence. On the religious plane, which so far as cosmology is concerned demands no more than the minimum necessary or useful for salvation, this idea of creation is fully sufficient, and the logical considerations which support it are perfectly plausible within the framework of their limitation; for they at least convey a key truth that allows a fuller understanding of the nature of God, as it is pleased to reveal itself in the monotheistic religions.
More than once we have had occasion to mention the following erroneous argument: if God creates the world in response to an inward necessity, as is affirmed by the Platonists, this must mean that He is obliged to create it, and that therefore He is not free; since this is impossible, the creation can only be a gratuitous act. One might as well say that if God is One, or if He is a Trinity, or if He is all-powerful, or if He is good, He must be obliged to be so, and His nature is thus the result of a constraint, quod absit.
It is always a case of the same incapacity to conceive of antinomic realities, and to understand that if liberty, the absence of constraint, is a perfection, necessity, the absence of arbitrariness, is another.
If, in opposition to the Pythagorean-Platonic perspective, the concept is put forward of an Absolute which is threefold in its very essence, therefore devoid of the degrees of reality that alone can explain the hypostatic polarizations - an Absolute which creates without metaphysical necessity and which in addition acts without cause or motive - and if at the same time the right is claimed to a sacred illogicality in the name of an exclusive "Christian supernaturalism'', then an explanation is due of what logic is and what human reason is; for if our intelligence, in its very structure, is foreign or even opposed to Divine Truth, what then is it, and why did God give it to
us? Or to put it the other way round, what sort of Divine message is it that is opposed to the laws of an intelligence to which it is essentially addressed, and what does it signify that man was created "in the image of God"?

Now according to one Father of the Church, the sexes are not made in the image of God; only the features that are identical in the two sexes resemble God, for the simple reason that God is neither man nor woman. This reasoning is fallacious because, although it is evident that God is not in Himself a duality, He necessarily comprises the principia! Duality in His Unity, exactly as He comprises the Trinity or the Quaternity; and how can one refuse to admit that the Holy Virgin has a prototype in God not only as regards her humanity but also as regards her femininity?]
And what motive could induce us to accept a message that was contrary, not to our earthly materialism or to our passion, but to the very substance of our spirit? For the "wisdom according to the flesh" of Saint Paul does not embrace every form of metaphysics that does not know the Gospels, nor is it logic as such, for the Apostle was logical; what it denotes is the reasonings whereby worldly men seek to prop up their passions and their pride, such as Sophism and Epicureanism and, in our days, the current philosophy of the world. "Wisdom according to the flesh" is also the gratuitous philosophy that does not lead us inwards and which contains no door opening on to spiritual realization; it is philosophy of the type of"art for art's sake” which commits one to nothing and is vain and pernicious for that very reason.
The incomprehension by theologians of Platonic and Oriental emanationism arises from the fact that monotheism puts in parenthesis the notion, essential metaphysically, of Divine Relativity or Maya; 3 it is this parenthesis, or in practice this ignorance, which inhibits an understanding of the fact that there is no incompatability whatever between the "absolute Absolute", Beyond-Being, and the "relative Absolute", creative Being, and that this distinction is even crucial.
The Divine Maya, Relativity, is the necessary consequence of the very Infinitude of the Principle: it is because God is infinite that He comprises the dimension of relativity, and it is because He comprises that dimension that He manifests the world. To which it should be added: it is because the world is manifestation and not Principle that relativity, which at first was only determination, limitation and manifestation, gives rise to that particular modality constituting "evil". It is neither in the existence of evil things that evil lies nor in their existential properties nor in their faculties of sensation and of action, if it be a question of animate beings, nor even in the act insofar as it is the manifestation of a power; evil resides only in whatever is privative or negative with respect to good, and its function is to manifest in the world its aspect of separation from the Principle, and to play its part in an equilibrium and a rhythm necessitated by the economy of the created Universe.
In this way evil, wholly evil though it be when looked at in isolation, attaches itself to a good and is dissolved qua evil when one looks at it in its cosmic context and in its universal function.
Platonists feel no need whatever to try to fill the gap which might seem to exist between the pure Absolute and the determination and creative Absolute; it is precisely because they are aware of relativity in divinis and of the Divine cause of that relativity that they are emanationists.
In other words, the Hellenists, if they did not have a word to express it, nevertheless possessed in their own way the concept of Maya, and it is their doctrine of emanation that proves it ...

So, I have turned 42 on the 42nd day of the year.
The significance of this means nothing unless you're a fan of the works of Douglas Adams. Look him up. You'll thank me later.
Suffice it to say that at this particular juncture some sort of revelation should have come to me about Life, The Universe and Everything.
Zip. Zero. The stillness of the Void.
In my youth I never thought that I would reach this age and if I did I was certain that I would be standing on another planet holding the keys to a flying car.
Later in my life I envisioned my life at this age as something far different than it actually is. I have answered none of the big questions, about my life, my future or even the things that troubled me in my 20s.
42 is as good an answer as anything I've found. That and the truism 'Kid, there's a lot of assholes out there.' Thanks to my news-writing professor in journalism school for that pearl of wisdom.
I'll leave this day with this bit of dialog from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy:

Why do some people seem unable to catch COVID? Scientists are looking for answers.
One of the lingering mysteries of the COVID-19 pandemic is why some people get infected without getting sick and others don't get infected at all, despite exposure.
Beyond a few known risk factors, it's mostly dumb luck that determines how someone will fare if they are exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19, a handful of researchers said.
But they're still trying for more scientific answers by studying people who are intentionally exposed to the virus and those who escape its effects.
People like Faith Paine.
Paine, 26, of London, volunteered for a "challenge trial" – meaning researchers dribbled the virus that causes COVID-19 up her nose, intending to get her sick.
For 17 days last year, she had to stay in a single room in London's Royal Free Hospital, unable to leave, exercise or see anyone who wasn't encased in a hazmat suit. The food was the worst part, she said, ordered ahead for her entire stay and more appropriate for an airplane ride than a regular diet.
Between all the poking and prodding, she was allowed to go to bed only after 11:30 p.m., and was awakened by 6:30 a.m. She felt awful the whole time, but she wasn't sure whether it was because of the lack of sleep and mediocre food, or because she had COVID-19.
She didn't.
Like half of the 36 U.K. residents paid about $6,500 to be willingly exposed to COVID-19, she never developed an infection and never shed virus.
Dr. Andrew Catchpole, who helped lead the research, said he didn't expect everyone to get sick. He runs regular challenge trials for infections like the flu and always aims for about 50% to 70% to fall ill, to ensure he is giving enough, but not an unsafe amount of virus.
But it didn't take much virus to give those 18 people COVID-19, and though data is still being analyzed, they have yet to identify a clear reason why the others didn't catch it, or why some of those who did never reported significant symptoms.
"(That's) the great unknown – the X factor that has yet to be discovered," said Catchpole, chief scientific officer of Open Orphan, the company that ran the study.
Infection – or lack of one – mainly has to do with chance combination of multiple factors, he and others said.
Many ingredients are in the mix, including amount of exposure, genetics, and immunity – "all factors which we are not aware of going on in our bodies and the environment which affect all these things," Catchpole said.
For Paine, all the poking and prodding she went through – and the fact that she was chosen for the trial out of 26,000 people who raised their hands – was a happy reminder that she's among the healthiest of humans.
"It's quite nice to know everything is ticking along quite nicely," she said, and it helped take away some of her fear of getting infected with COVID-19.
It never crossed her mind to quit the study early.
"If this is the two and a half weeks I have to give up to provide research to shorten the time we all have to live with this, that's absolutely nothing," she said.
Exposure and genetics
For someone who is vaccinated, exposure likely plays a role in whether they get sick, said Florian Krammer, a virologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.
That's why "social distancing" from sick people and mask wearing reduces the likelihood of getting sick.
"It's really just a question of not getting exposed in the right amount," Krammer said.
With infectious diseases like HIV, malaria and the stomach bug, rare individuals have a genetic gift that allows them to avoid falling ill.
And just as studying those outliers can offer insights into those diseases and potentially lead to treatments, Dr. András Spaan, a microbiologist at The Rockefeller University in New York City, hopes to learn more about COVID-19 by studying people who don't get it.
Spaan and his colleagues have already shown that genes can make COVID-19 worse. About 10% of patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia share a genetic fluke, they found in a paper last fall.
No one knows how many people have such natural resistance to COVID-19.
"It might be super, super rare," Spaan said.
When Spaan and his colleagues published their first paper on the subject back in the fall, they were inundated with 7,000 emails from people all over the world offering to participate in their research.
So far, he said, the group, which now includes 150 partners, has enrolled 700 volunteers, analyzing their DNA and experiences with COVID-19.
It's unclear whether immunity to the virus that causes COVID-19 would translate to protection against other viral illnesses, such as the flu. Spaan thinks the luck is probably specific to COVID-19 and maybe even individual variants of the virus.
And very often, there's a price to pay for genetic resistance to disease, which is why it tends to be biologically limited, he said. Genes that confer resistance to malaria, for example, also increase risk for sickle cell disease, a lethal and extremely painful blood disorder.
Still, Spaan said, it's crucial to study these individuals.
"By studying how human genetics works against COVID, there may be evidence for therapeutics," he said.
Immune factors
The human immune system has evolved a number of layers of protection, some of which have been around since our ancestors were single-celled organisms and others that arrived more recently, said Dr. Christopher Chiu, an infectious diseases physician and immunologist at Imperial College London.
One of these layers includes antibodies, which can recognize viruses, bind and neutralize them. Some of these antibodies can be found in the nose and begin attacking viruses like SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, before they have a chance to enter the body.
"(If) the virus in the droplets or aerosols that you breath in are at relatively small amounts, having the antibody right there may well block infection completely," said Chiu, who was chief investigator of the British challenge trial for COVID-19.
But it's hard to measure levels of antibody in the nose, so it's unclear whether someone has enough antibodies there to protect against infection.
The immune system's T cells can also recognize virus-infected cells and clear them before the virus can grow too much or spread around the body. Again, these are tough to measure, Chiu said.
And very little is known, he said, about the ancient protective mechanisms, like viral-killing proteins in the mucus. These have been around nearly as long as viruses, so pathogens have learned ways to evade them. "It's really difficult to establish whether they have a big effect or not," Chiu said.
Other than getting vaccinated and taking care of yourself, there's not much people can do to build an immune system SARS-CoV-2 can't penetrate. Krammer chuckled at the idea that some people didn't have to worry about COVID-19 because they have a "strong" immune system.
But some people might have an immune system that responds so quickly to infection that the virus doesn't have time to replicate much before it gets knocked out. This is why children generally – though not always – have a mild response to a COVID-19 infection, Krammer said.
Some people might be less vulnerable to infection because they were recently infected with different viruses, for example common cold viruses, Krammer said. This, and other infections as well, can activate part of the immune system, providing short-term protection from other viruses including SARS-CoV-2. That protection fades fast.
But having antibodies that recently fought off a similar virus might, at least for a few days, save someone from a severe case of COVID-19, Krammer said.
Past infection
Previous infection with COVID-19 seems to provide protection for about 20 months, according to a study published Thursday.
The immunity from infection is better than vaccination alone, whose protection wanes, said Peter Nordstrom, an author on the study and a professor of pediatric medicine at Umeå University in Sweden.
After six months, protection from vaccination was only about half as good as it was shortly after the shots, while "a previous infection, if you survive it, provides very good protection," he said, warning that it would be dangerous to try to get infected.
Mutations and the rise of different variants can also weaken the immunity provided by infection, he said. "Perhaps an infection from the alpha strain does not protect against the omicron."
And people can still get infected even if they've been vaccinated or infected before.
"Protection against severe disease seems to last longer than protection against testing positive," Nordstrom said.
Mysteries remain
Initially, it seemed that some people had natural immunity to the virus – maybe because of a previous infection or an immune system quirk. But as time has passed and the virus has evolved, it seems COVID-19 is likely inevitable for nearly everyone who isn't vaccinated, said Prabhat Jha, an epidemiologist at the University of Toronto and St. Michael's Hospital.
"Very few people seem to generally escape infection," he said. "It's just a matter of time and the strain variation."
In addition, there are clearly risk factors that make people more vulnerable to getting sicker if infected, including pregnancy, diabetes, obesity and advanced age.
These risk factors may partially explain why many countries in Africa have seen less devastation from COVID-19 than was initially feared. The median age across the continent is just under 20, while it tops 38 in North America.
Africans are also less likely to obese or have risk factors like diabetes.
"If you have a younger, slimmer population with less diabetes, it's going to be less likely that they get sickened if infected by the virus," Jha said.
Jha is currently studying COVID-19 infections with researchers in Sierra Leone, a west African nation that was devastated by the Ebola epidemic of 2014-2016. They are trying to understand why there have been relatively few deaths from COVID-19 in that country, despite widespread infections, little use of masks, no vaccines and little ability to maintain social distance.
"What that is pointing to? The truth is we don't know," Jha said. "This is where the detective story starts."

Two Chinese mRNA Covid Vaccines Move Toward Clinical Trials
A Chinese company said it’s received approval to start clinical trials of a Covid-19 vaccine based on mRNA technology, while local media reported that another domestic company has applied to start a similar trial.
CSPC Pharmaceutical Group Ltd. has been approved by China’s medical product regulator to begin a trial of an COVID-19 vaccine named “SYS6006,” it said in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange.
The company said pre-clinical studies demonstrated the vaccine can help neutralize against the omicron variant of coronavirus. It does not need to be stored at below-freezing temperatures, the company said.
China has inoculated the majority of its population using domestically-made coronavirus vaccines based on older inactivated virus technology, but authorities have not approved any based on mRNA outside the cities of Hong Kong and Macau.
China is battling its worst coronavirus outbreak since early 2020 as the more infectious omicron variant spreads in large cities including Shanghai.
Separately, Shanghai-based Stemirna Therapeutics has applied to Chinese regulators to conduct a clinical trial of its mRNA Covid-19 vaccine, state-media reported.
The company has built production facilities capable of producing 400 million doses a year, the Cailian financial news service reported.
A Chinese mRNA vaccine developed by Walvax Biotechnology Co., Suzhou Abogen Biosciences Co. and the Chinese military has already entered clinical trials.
But that vaccine may fall short of the benefits generated by shots from Pfizer Inc., BioNTech SE and Moderna Inc., a study published in January showed.
China National Pharmaceutical Group Co., better known as Sinopharm, said Sunday its second-generation recombinant protein Covid-19 vaccine has received approval from Beijing for clinical trials. The improved vaccine has already been approved by the United Arab Emirates as a booster shot and enhances immune response to the coronavirus, the company said in December.

On my way into the Hospital I was answering a call so I saw these alluring screen prints and I dared not engage with them. On my way out with less rush in my steps I wanted to leave as expediently as possible, so I felt guilty taking these pictures, fortunately the corridor was empty of people and full of, “Evening at Calanais,” by Frances Walker. The images here are quick mobile pictures that are not sharp, not colour balanced and not good representations of the originals that are provided through a scheme to bring art into NHS spaces, “Tonic Arts Programme creatively enhances environments and enriches experiences at NHS Lothian.” I have no links to the artist, or the programme. I will post links to them below, I may not have found the best links as I am not functioning at all well. Please do look at and support the artist and the programme. In total admiration I wanted to share the pulling and the plucking at my megalithic loving heart strings that felt rich resounding sounds from the stones as I looked at these pictures that gave me the inspiration to share the love of circled stones that here in screen prints sang songs in expressive pictures to me when I needed to hear such songs.
I am sharing these bad mobile phone images to show the powerful works of the artist with only the intention of showing the seeds that sprouted in me. The original works are superb, these are quickly taken phone pictures produced whilst moving along a corridor. The original screen prints that I saw are on show in Hospital and not easily seen by Calanais lovers and Megalith Minded People so I hope that sharing these pictures and the links to the artist Frances Walker and the Tonic Arts Programme is beneficial.
My visit to the hospital was shocking, heart breaking and healing. I have praise galore for those that work to keep us well. I hope that the seeds of love sprout around you and through you when you need them. I hope, hope, hope that you find the love that calls to you in health and in struggle and that there is love for us all to create, to find and to share.
Getting these images together has been a distant healing and soul soothing experience that has work me out for now. I will carry many things of this caring and sharing into my dreams. These images have helped me and I feel sure that there are others somewhere who will benefit from these as pictures from a hospital wall set there to help those who can see them and engage with them. These pictures have been in my mind and heart over a week now, I hope that they connect with you in ways that heal us all.

A quick cheeky snap while checking out tethered shooting with my camera. Taken in dark conditions hand held, so ISO was pushed up to 6400! But to be honest I quite like the atmosphere this has produced :-)

I think the original power supply was just a multi-tapped transformer. However, a transformer with the right taps is not a standard item, and the transformer kits to wind your own transformers are difficult to find now. So I used 2 standard mains transformers, suitably wired.
To make the power supply I also needed the Bulgin input and output connectors, fuseholders (a panel mounting one for the mains input, 3 chassis mounting ones for the outputs) and a neon indicator. These will be fitted to the lid of a die-cast box, which I have drilled suitably.
Anyone can give this a whirl if they want to!
