Another hellebore starting to bloom. This one is a white or yellow color.
All the hellebores are really putting on new growth. Thriving! I think I'll get a lot more hellebores this year.
today another potted oriental tower lily flowered. it's the lily in the centre next to the bud on the left. yesterday's oriental lily that opened is on the right. definitely growing lilies next year and more of them :)
lilies that i planted in pots have flourished but most of those planted in the garden soil were eaten by slugs. next year all the lily bulbs will be in pots. the few that succeeded in the soil this year i'll leave in the soil but no fresh bulbs

for many years my garden was a shrubbery flic.kr/p/Lhv9ag which i loved. a picket fence covered in an ivy hedge coming down in a storm flic.kr/p/2gnCyih meant that over time changes had to happen flic.kr/p/2mn2x8a i'll be glad when the trellis is covered in honeysuckle and jasmine. that's the plan ...

Happy Wing Wednesday.

Another shot of the Prince of Wales Dock. The dock used to be an unloading area for coal ships which tied up where the houses are now situated. A friend of mine used to work in the holds of the ship cleaning up after the coal was unloaded. Hard work in those days. Sadly he is no longer with us.
My artwork and poem showed at EMERGENT, the beautiful gallery of Ilyra Chardin.
"I know this ancient darkness
gray rooms foggy lights
maze of earthy caves
Claustrophobic funicular buildings
and doors suspended in a leaden sky
Loneliness of old warehouses
and mysterious presences
Here I am back
night mirror of the day
but this is no longer my world
Now I live in the sun and wind
without the need for wings"

Thanks to all the friendly people that favour my picture.
'Ducks' are what I call all the water birds in our neighbourhood: there are too many varieties and I'm not an ornithologist :(
(I do know this one is a.. swan - but it's just a type of duck, isn't it? ;) ))
In the last of the evening's light, CP train #471 for the D&I hits the hill towards Galewood on Elgin Sub Main #1. The 3 EMD pedigrees sounded wonderful doing what they do best, and who knows for how much longer that may be. Galewood, IL.
Many thanks for your visits, faves and comments. Cheers.
Sacred Kingfisher
Scientific Name: Todiramphus sanctus
Description: The Sacred Kingfisher is a medium sized kingfisher. It has a turquoise back, turquoise blue rump and tail, buff-white underparts and a broad cream collar. There is a broad black eye stripe extending from bill to nape of neck. Both sexes are similar, although the female is generally lighter with duller upper parts. Young birds are similar to the female, but have varying amounts of rusty-brown edging to feathers on the collar and underparts, and buff edges on the wing coverts.
Distribution: The Sacred Kingfisher is common and familiar throughout the coastal regions of mainland Australia and less common throughout Tasmania. The species is also found on islands from Australasia to Indonesia and New Zealand.
Habitat: The Sacred Kingfisher inhabits woodlands, mangroves and paperbark forests, tall open eucalypt forest and melaleuca forest.
Seasonal movements: In Australia, Sacred Kingfishers spend the winter in the north of their range and return south in the spring to breed.
Feeding: Sacred Kingfishers forage mainly on the land, only occasionally capturing prey in the water. They feed on crustaceans, reptiles, insects and their larvae and, infrequently, fish. The birds perch on low exposed branch on the lookout for prey. Once prey is located, the Sacred Kingfisher swoops down and grasps it in its bill, returning to the perch to eat it.
Breeding: For most of the year Sacred Kingfishers are mainly solitary, pairing only for the breeding season. Usually two clutches are laid in a season. Both sexes excavate the nest, which is normally a burrow in a termite mound, hollow branch or river bank. The nest chamber is unlined and can be up to 20m above the ground. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young.
Calls: The voice of the Sacred Kingfisher is a loud "ek ek ek ek" repeated continuously throughout breeding season. Birds also give a "kee kee kee" in excitement and a series of chirring, scolding notes when alarmed.
Minimum Size: 19cm
Maximum Size: 24cm
Average size: 21cm
Average weight: 45g
Breeding season: September to December; occasionally extended to March, if conditions are favourable.
Clutch Size: 3 to 6
Incubation: 18 days
Nestling Period: 26 days

Narrow leaf cotton bush ( Gomphocarpus fruticosis) was introduced to Australia as a garden plant from South Africa and is now a common weed in bushland throughout the country.
A touch of blur added in post to counter this iPhone's exaggerated sharpness.
