First bud/bloom of the 2023 season from another one of our David Austin roses, The Ancient Mariner. It is blooming 6 weeks earlier than it did last year! One of my favourites!!

The name of this rose was inspired by Samuel Coleridge’s epic poem

“The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”

The blooms are a beautiful glowing mid pink at the centre paling towards the edges which produce a strong myrrh fragrances.

It is now in its sixth year in our garden here in Houston ,Texas (Zone9A) with numerous buds to follow.

I took this image last February on a lovely road trip that took me through Glencoe up to Isle of Skye. Having never visited this area before, I was struck by the beauty that was all around. I was hoping for a bit of snow on the peaks, and when I first entered the valley and got the conditions I had envisioned, I couldn't be happier. This was the first shot I took when getting there.

A breathtaking photograph of a towering redwood tree in Muir Woods National Monument captures the majesty of nature in its purest form. The immense trunk, rich in deep reddish-brown hues, stands tall among its ancient companions, reaching toward the sky. The surrounding forest, bathed in soft, dappled light filtering through the canopy, creates a serene and almost mystical atmosphere. The towering trees create a cathedral-like effect, with their branches intertwining above, casting gentle shadows on the lush, green forest floor. This image beautifully encapsulates the timeless, awe-inspiring presence of these ancient redwoods, a living testament to the natural beauty of California’s coastal wilderness.

Not much cloud in the sky but always worth a visit to the beach.

The ancient forest was covered in peat before eventually being swallowed by the sea.

Legends say trees and nearby township were flooded after a priestess neglected a magical well.

Conditions inside the peat, devoid of oxygen and slightly alkaline, have meant the stumps survived.
