Sveti Naum, Macedonia

The Monastery of Saint Naum is an Eastern Orthodox monastery in the Republic of Macedonia, named after the medieval Saint Naum who founded it. It is situated along Lake Ohrid, 29 kilometres (18 mi) south of the city of Ohrid.

The Lake Ohrid area, including St Naum, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Macedonia.

The monastery was established in the Bulgarian Empire in 905 by St Naum of Ohrid himself. St Naum is also buried in the church.

Since the 16th century, a Greek school had functioned in the monastery. The area where the monastery of St Naum (Albanian: Shën Naum) lies belonged to Albania for a short period from 1912 until June 28, 1925, when Zog of Albania ceded it to Yugoslavia as a result of negotiations between Albania and Yugoslavia and as a gesture of goodwill

View from the hill on ruins of the old city. Here, when now you can see many small stone walls, in old times were residential houses :)

Kamiros or Camirus was a city of ancient Rhodes, in the Dodecanese, Greece. Its site is on the northwest coast of the island. The ancient city was built on three levels. At the top of the hill was the acropolis, with the temple complex of Athena Kameiras and the stoa. The stoa consisted of two rows of Doric columns with rooms for shops or lodgings in the rear. From the top of the acropolis, there is a beautiful view of the sea and the island. The main settlement was on the middle terrace, consisting of a grid of parallel streets and residential blocks. On the lower terrace are found a Doric temple, probably to Apollo; the Fountain House, with the Agora in front of it; and Peribolos of the Altars, which contained dedications to various deities. During the prehistoric period the area was inhabited by Mycenaean Greeks. The city itself was founded by the Dorians. The temple foundations were begun at least as early as the eighth century BC. The earthquake of 226 BC destroyed the city and the temple. The earthquake of 142 AD destroyed the city for the second time. The Acropolis was excavated by Alfred Biliotti and Auguste Salzmann between 1852 and 1864. Many of the finds from their digs are now kept in the British Museum in London. In 1928 the Italian Archaeological School began a systematic excavation of the area together with restoration work which continued until the end of the Second World War.

Dawne miasteczko odkopano i odnaleziono w 1859 roku.

a digital art depiction of the Ancient Roman Colosseum in the era around 75 BC as it would of looked back in the day (digital art by B. Bouley)

Perhaps the monument most symbolic of ancient Rome, the Colosseum is one of the city’s most fascinating—and popular—tourist attractions. The Emperor Vespasian commissioned it around AD 70–72 and his son Titus officially opened it in AD 80 with 100 days of games, including wild animal fights and gladiatorial combat. It was the largest amphitheater in the Roman world, with seating for 50,000 people, until it was abandoned and later used as a quarry for projects like the Basilica di San Pietro and San Giovanni in Laterano. It underwent a restoration in 2016 courtesy of Tod’s CEO Diego della Valle.

The massive ramparts of Eggardon Hill Fort near Bridport, Dorset command an amazing view over western Dorset and the Jurassic Coast. They also command a special place in my memory too as they have provided such a natural playground for both my children and grandchildren. Running and rolling up and down these ancient defences, preferably avoiding the cow pats, is such a joyous thing to do. Thank you ancient ancestors for the unintended consequences of your labours.
