This is a burst analysis of the first 1000 results of a search for "mesothelioma" in paper titles retrieved from MEDLINE via the Scholarly Database. It indicates that in 1932, the word "pleura" suddenly appeared with "mesothelioma" in paper titles more frequently than it had before, in a "burst" lasting until 1966. "Pericardium" did the same in 1956-1978.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the linings and coverings of many internal organs, including the pleura (lining of the lung cavity) and the pericardium (a sac surrounding the heart). Mesothelioma is usually caused by asbestos exposure, and symptoms appear 20-50 years after exposure with a peak at 30 years after exposure. Large-scale commercial asbestos use began in the late 19th century, which puts the beginning of the long "pleura" burst just after the ~30 yr latency period for mesothelioma to have developed as a result of that surge in asbestos popularity.

So one story here might be that the "pleura" burst beginning in the 1930s is a result of asbestos inhalation becoming much more common with the rise of commercial asbestos use around 1900 and the exposed individuals developing pleural mesothelioma. If the main mode of asbestos exposure is through inhalation, it follows that the lungs are the frontline of exposure and that it takes more prolonged or intense exposure or simply more time for sufficient quantities of asbestos to enter the bloodstream and travel to the pericardium to trigger mesothelioma there. That delay could explain why "pericardium" bursts later and more weakly than "pleura." Alternatively, pericardial mesothelioma may be the result of metastasis of pleural mesothelioma.
