Disassembly of Picardy French Canadian wheel. The flyer whorl, shaft and bobbin appear to be reused from an older wheel. The shaft is bent and needs straightening. The flyer is newer. It shows very light wear. Hooks on one side only. The maidens have been rotated. Wheel once had leather bearings to hold flyer. Saw marks on wheel base and wheel rim are smoothed down, but do not eliminate the saw marks. The leather bearings in wheel uprights need replacement. Wheel shows heavy wear. Built very sturdily. Two ply handspun wool yarn leader below 4 ply commercial worsted on bobbin. The bobbin holder thing base is satin smooth from wear and fits the table hole perfectly. No tension adjustment for wheel band. Unless the missing bearings were used for that. Flyer must jam on. The whorl jams on.

In the subject Forensic Science, Biometrics has been used since ancient times. The first textbook on the subject was written by Sir Francis Galton in 1892. The French policeman Bertillon developed a system of personal identification by bodily/physical measurements. It came to be known as the Bertillon system. From about 1910, the fingerprints became more broadly used, since it was easy to equate and stock in comparison to the Bertillon system where many measurements had to be taken from each body part, with many possible errors.

This computer analysis shows the CA in MerlinsMans' Looking for CA 8739 taken with the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. The CA has been amplified by ~6 dB (~2 f-stops). This enhance view of the CA should be used to identify regions of the original (full resolution) photo where you should look for the effects of CA. CA doesn't always result in a strong visible color tint in the original photo, but it often results in a general loss of sharpness and reduced resolution when a visible color shift isn't readily apparent.

Nikon D80

Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/400)

Aperture: f/10 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Note: Not much CA is expected at f/10.

Focal Length: 17 mm

ISO Speed: 200

Exposure Bias: 0/6 EV

Caveat: Be careful how you interpret this CA analysis. Some CA can masquerade as image content and can escape the digital filters. The digital filters will usually catch the edge of the CA, but may not capture the extent when it spans several pixels. The type of CA that slips past the digital filter is usually pretty easy to spot in the real image.

PS: This is a better example of the CA that this method can find.
