Dr. Challifour is a mathematical physicist (he told us that his first teaching job after he received his doctorate from Cambridge was in Princeton... before it went coed) who taught me vector calculus and real analysis. After marking and returning a particularly disappointing set of exams (mean: 57%, I, luckily, did very well), he spent a little bit of the class talking about how badly math is taught in America. This was one of the funnier moments.

LA CASA DEI VETTII riapre al pubblico dopo 20 anni: grande bellezza e triviale realtà nella casa simbolo di Pompei - Riapre la casa simbolo di Pompei, la casa dei Vettii, che non manca in nessuna guida del sito UNESCO campano e in nessun manuale sull’arte antica, grazie ai suoi straordinari affreschi e alle sculture che adornavano il suo ampio giardino.
Viene restituita al pubblico una domus che per la prima volta, dopo 20 anni di chiusura e una parziale riapertura nel 2016 - relativa all’ambiente di ingresso dell’atrio e a quelli circostanti- si può finalmente ammirare in tutta la sua articolazione e complessità architettonica, grazie ai recenti interventi.
Il nuovo progetto di restauro, intrapreso nel 2016 sotto la direzione di Massimo Osanna, si è avvalso della collaborazione di professionalità tra le più varie, tra archeologi, architetti, restauratori, ingegneri, strutturisti e esperti di giardinaggio, profilandosi come uno dei cantieri più complessi nel panorama dei beni archeologici degli ultimi decenni.

Goodwyn Mills Cawood (as MKA) designed the renovation of five existing buildings and two new buildings on the west side of campus. The project required an in depth analysis of the prevalent architectural styles and existing building components that have accumulated over the years, in order to update the five existing buildings that were constructed between 1935 and 1938. The project not only consists of updating HVAC, existing circulation, improving living conditions, and rectifying different architectural styles, it also created the challenge of designing two new dormitories that actively contribute to the Historic Complex. The renovations returned the existing buildings to their original appearance and removed non-characteristic 1960’s additions. The residential quadrangle was reinforced with the insertion of the two new buildings and linkages to major campus paths were strengthened.
This area houses students who are members of various fraternities and sororities in mostly double occupancy rooms and some private rooms. It offers “house-style” living and amenities for each organization including kitchen and dining, and study lounges.
The severe grades on site were utilized to create a monumental stair between the two newer buildings at the end of the quad creating one entry point at the high end of the site. A connecting piece with an open gateway through the ground floor of the longer building provides a second gateway into the quad space. These entry points into the quad create a unique experience for the residents and other Greek members who use the quad as a hub for Greek life activities. Our firm worked in association with Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas on this project.

Not exactly 'a rose by any other name' sort of proposition, is it?
But we do pay an inordinate amount of attention to brand names and designer labels. And no, Brand R is most assuredly NOT '130 times better' than Brand T. Indeed, if the prime function of the watch is to keep accurate time, Brand T might even do a better job of it. A new top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz is not going to get me to my destination any more effectively than my humble VW Jetta (for that matter, a 20-year-old Pontiac could probably accomplish the same objective). And if I could replace the VW logo in my car's grille with a 3-pointed star, would it really accomplish anything? Those with the means are willing to pay a lot to stand out from the common herd-----everybody knows that. Still, what kind of neurotic schlepp is going to notice-----much less care about-----the timepiece on somebody else's wrist? Unfortunately, however, this happens-----and it's what drives the 'value' of these high-end brands. If nobody noticed or cared (and ideally nobody SHOULD notice or care; why feed this self-important jerk's already outsized ego) then these status symbols would lose all their perceived value immediately. If I see an antique car coming along the road I'll turn my head to look at it. I categorically refuse to do the same for any ostentatious vehicle, the driver of which is constantly scanning the sidewalks for pedestrians displaying signs of envy.
