“You don’t learn to walk by following the rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.” – Richard Branson
If we were so afraid of falling down that we never learned to walk, where would life take us? The first step is always the scariest because we are moving towards something new. When we try something for the first time we never know if we are going to fall flat on our face. And if that fear overtakes us, then we never get anywhere.
It’s probably hard for most of us to think back, to recollect what it felt like to take our first steps. But I bet if we could, we would realize that we weren’t so much afraid of falling, as we were afraid of never being able to walk.
Trying something new is always scary but that’s how we know we are doing something good, that we are going after something worthwhile. The scariest thing in life, whether we want to admit it or not, it just standing still, is just staying in our comfort zone.
We can read about all the best techniques on how to walk, we can even watch others and learn about what walking looks like. But until we attempt to put one foot in front of the next, until we take that chance, we don’t know what it feels like. Until we attempt to break the rules of gravity, we will always be held back, we will always be pushed down.
The same holds true for trying to tackle anything new in life. It will always be scary at first, but it is not actually whether we are able to walk that defines us. It is in trying. Because in doing so, we realize that we can. We realize that falling over isn’t really that bad, because when you fall on your face, you are still moving forward.
If everyone followed the rules, did as everyone had done before them, nothing new would ever be created. It is our responsibility as human beings to push the boundaries of what other people think is acceptable, of what other people think is possible.
Everyday we piece together the knowledge that we have attained from other people. But that does not mean that we need to follow exactly in the footsteps of those who came before us. We owe it to our predecessors to make a new path, to try even when we know we may be doing it alone.
What legacy do you want to create? Do you want to be remembered as someone who just followed the easy-to-navigate path of others? Or do you want to be remembered as the individual who broke new ground in the pursuit of greatness?
It’s not whether we succeed that matters, it’s the fact when we try, we show others that they can do the same. The first step is always the scariest but it is the one that takes us where we never thought we’d be able to go, that takes us where we always wanted to be.
But that first step will be made much easier when we realize that we are taking it not just for ourself, but for those who come after us. It is when our driving force is larger than ourselves that we must take those steps, no matter how many times we may fall along the way.
It may appear to be darkness that we are stepping into, but by doing so, we shine a light so that others can see.

sometimes in the middle of the night
you hear the strangest things
like broken hearts, fallen tears,
an angels broken wings.
sometimes around the middle day
you see amazing sights
two people falling down from
what were such great heights.
sometimes at the sunset time
you feel a little strange
inside your heart is bursting out
and you feel your insides change.

I wonder sometimes if you think about me as often as I think about you. And I wonder if when you're holding her you think about all the times you held me and promised you'd never let go.
Then I realize you're making all the same promises to someone else, all the same promises you never kept and you'll break when you've had enough of her.
"I think its funny to see people making the same promises that they couldn't keep before except to different people, all the while knowing that it'll only make things worse in the end."
