It was clear that most of the people showing at the festival have a tremendous affection for and pride in their animals.
[Unfortunately I had a very slow shutter speed for some reason so it's a bit blurry. The metadata says I was in Tv mode which I rarely use and certainly not for a shot like this. So maybe the dial got bumped accidently. Too bad, I really like the shot otherwise. ]
Every table had one of these special frames on it. Then there was a larger frame, used as a key, for place settings. So creative! I sat at the 'Fondness Table' :]

This is a Haleakala sunrise, at 5:38 a.m.
Through this little excursion, I discovered two things:
1) Sunrises are a daily occurrence, but a once-in-a-lifetime sort of thing to experience.
2) I am not a morning person.
Upon seeing this photo again, and the sun and moon present there, it reminded me of a bit of The Notebook that I'd read today:
"Dusk, I realized then, is just an illusion, because the sun is either above the horizon or below it. And that means that day and night are linked in a way that few things are; there cannot be one without the other, yet they cannot exist at the same time. How would it feel, I remember wondering, to be always together, yet forever apart?"
8 August 1904. The affection felt by Tolkien for Father Francis is shown in this ingenious pictorial code-letter in which the twelve-year old schoolboy invites 'M-eye deer owl-d France-hiss' to come and visit him. His preoccupation with languages, rhymes and pictures is already apparent and the letter ends with a limerick: There was an old priest naméd Francis Who was so fond of "cheefongy" dances That he sat up too late And worried his pate Arranging these Frenchified Prances
This is a copy of one of the deed transfers, back in the 1890s. Of special interest is the consideration: $1 and "the love and affection which the party of the first part bears for the party of the second part."
Argent usually stays upstairs in her box sleeping most of the day (she's just about 17 years old now). Sometimes she comes down in search of affection, as she did here.
... "In the Victorian era in Europe, orchids were largely seen as a symbol of luxury and elegance, and not so much as a symbol of fertility and virility, although the ancient beliefs still held strong is some places. Today, the pink orchid is commonly designated as the 14th wedding anniversary flower, symbolizing affection and love."
