This is a great little secret tucked away on a corner where you wouldn't likely expect to find any commerce anymore. Some of the city's best BBQ pork bun and dim sum are available here from 8am to 4pm everyday but Sunday. For a Chinese breakfast or lunch, it's great, but as a convenience store, 8am-4pm are very inconvenient hours.
Whereas most commercial additions in Sacramento are concrete or cinderblock additions in front of victorians, bungalows, or other early 20th-century homes, this is one of the few commercial additions in Sac which seems to be of the same type of construction and siding as the house.

The latest addition to the SRPS at the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway, a class 84 electric locomotive on loan from the National Railway Museun. No truth in the rumour the B&KR is to get wired. Pity, we could then run this & the class 303 (ex SPT "Blue train"). Come & see it (& plenty more) at the Scottish Railway Museum at Bo'ness.

Steve Hanks is recognized as one of the best watercolor artists today. The detail, color and realism of Steve Hanks' paintings are unheard of in this difficult medium. A softly worn patterned quilt, the play of light on the thin veil of surf on sand, or the delicate expression of a child—-Steve Hanks captures these patterns of life better than anyone.
Steve Hanks was born into a military family in San Diego in 1949. His father was a highly decorated WWII Navy flyer. Hanks grew up playing tennis and surfing along the beaches of Southern California. “The ocean made a strong and lasting impression on me. It was good for the soul to be out in the water—surfing, swimming, or simply getting in touch with its mysterious power.”
The family was transferred to New Mexico when Steve was a junior. After high school he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in San Francisco, earning excellent marks in commercial art and figure drawing. He transferred to the California College of Arts and Crafts, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Steve Hanks took a job as a caretaker at a Campfire Girl’s camp near Cuba, New Mexico in 1976. The pay was minimal, but the rent was free, and all during the winter months his time was his own. For the next four and a half years Hanks experimented with many media: oils, watercolor, pencil, acrylics. “If I hadn’t spent so much time perfecting my drawing skills,” he comments, “I would not be the painter I am today.” His first romantic piece, “Daisies and Lace”, was a harbinger of his developing style—it featured a lacy dress and a serene sunlit setting.
Hanks calls his style ‘emotional realism’. He often leaves the faces of his figures obscured or turned away, not only to leave the face to the imagination of the viewer but also to allow the entire figure to express the emotion. Backlighting is also a signature element of his style. “Sunlight has become one of my favorite subjects. I’m fascinated by how it filters through things, how it floods a whole room with color. Often my paintings are really more about sunlight than anything else.”
His marriage to Laura and the arrival of three children provided new inspiration for the artist. Many lovingly rendered domestic scenes were added to the portfolio during those years.
Jurors, galleries and collectors have long recognized the stature of Steve Hanks’ achievements. He received the National Watercolor Society Merit Award and the National Academy of Western Art Gold Medal, in addition to consistently appearing in the list of top ten American artists compiled by U.S. Art Magazine. Art for the Parks has honored his work with many awards since 1989.
“I’ve tried to be responsible and put positive images out into the world,” says Hanks. “I hope that my work brings comfort, pleasure and insight into people’s lives.”

"Mainz Cathedral or St. Martin's Cathedral (German: Mainzer Dom, Martinsdom or, officially, Der Hohe Dom zu Mainz) is located near the historical center and pedestrianized market square of the city of Mainz, Germany. This 1000-year-old Roman Catholic cathedral is the site of the episcopal see of the Bishop of Mainz.
Mainz Cathedral is predominantly Romanesque in style, but later exterior additions over many centuries have resulted in the appearance of various architectural influences seen today. It comprises three aisles and stands under the patronage of Saint Martin of Tours. The eastern quire is dedicated to Saint Stephen.
The interior of the cathedral houses tombs and funerary monuments of former powerful Electoral-prince-archbishops, or Kurfürst-Erzbischöfe, of the diocese and contains religious works of art spanning a millennium. The cathedral also has a central courtyard and statues of Saint Boniface and The Madonna on its grounds.
During the time of Mainz Archbishop Willigis (975–1011), the city of Mainz flourished economically, and Willigis became one of the most influential politicians of that time, ascending to regent of the empire between 991 and 994. In 975–976 shortly after his installation he ordered the construction of a new cathedral in the pre-Romanesque Ottonian architecture style. This new and impressive building was part of his vision of Mainz as the "second Rome".
This new cathedral was to take over the functions of two churches: the old cathedral and St. Alban's, which was the largest church in the area, belonging to a Benedictine abbey and serving as the burial ground for the bishops and other nobles, including Fastrada, a spouse of Charlemagne. Most of the synods and other important meetings were held at St. Alban's Abbey.
The new cathedral consisted of a double chancel with two transepts. The main hall was built in the typical triple-nave "cross" pattern. As was usual at that time no vault was included because of structural difficulties relating to the size of the building. Six towers rose from the church. A cloister was enclosed in the structure and a small freestanding church, St. Mary's Church, connected by a colonnade. This small church developed later into the collegiate church of St. Maria ad Gradus.
Sandstone was used as the primary building material for the cathedral. The inside was plastered white under the Archbishop Bardo, probably in the middle of the 11th century. During renovations ordered by Henry IV in the late 11th century, much of the outside was also plastered, but the cornices were left exposed in their original red and yellow. It is believed that the coloring of the cathedral was changed on a number of occasions, but no further documentation of the coloring is available until records of the Baroque works.
The cathedral suffered extensive damage from a fire on the day of its inauguration in 1009. Archbishop Bardo (Bardo of Oppershofen) presided over the completion of the cathedral begun under Willigis. By 1037 the main portions of the body of Mainz Cathedral were complete. Willigis was buried in the second church he had initiated, St. Stephan's, in 1011.
Mainz, previously known in English as Mentz or Mayence, is the capital and largest city of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Mainz is on the left bank of the Rhine, opposite the place where the Main joins the Rhine. Downstream of the confluence, the Rhine flows to the north-west, with Mainz on the left bank, and Wiesbaden, the capital of the neighbouring state Hesse, on the right bank.
Mainz is an independent city with a population of 219,501 and forms part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region.
Mainz was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC as a military fortress on the northernmost frontier of the empire and provincial capital of Germania Superior. Mainz became an important city in the 8th century AD as part of the Holy Roman Empire, capital of the Electorate of Mainz and seat of the Archbishop-Elector of Mainz, the Primate of Germany. Mainz is famous as the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of a movable-type printing press, who in the early 1450s manufactured his first books in the city, including the Gutenberg Bible. Mainz was heavily damaged in World War II; more than 30 air raids destroyed around half of the old town in the city centre, but many buildings were rebuilt post-war.
Mainz is notable as a transport hub, for wine production, and for its many rebuilt historic buildings. One of the ShUM-cities, Mainz and its Jewish cemetery is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Rheinhessen (in English often Rhine-Hesse or Rhenish Hesse) is the largest of 13 German wine regions (Weinanbaugebiete) for quality wines (QbA and Prädikatswein) with 26,758 hectares (66,120 acres) under cultivation in 2018. Named for the traditional region of Rhenish Hesse, it lies on the left bank of the Rhine between Worms and Bingen in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Despite its historic name it is currently no longer part of the federal-state of Hesse, this being the case since the end of World War II. There have been several unsuccessful attempts to legally reunite the former wine growing districts of Mainz on the Hessian side during the post-war area. Rheinhessen produces mostly white wine from a variety of grapes, particularly Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner, and is best known as the home of Liebfraumilch, although some previously underrated Rieslings are also made, increasingly in a powerful dry style.
The wine region is a member of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network.
The Rhine forms the eastern and northern boundary of the region, with the river Nahe to the west and the Haardt Mountains to the south. The Palatinate wine region lies to the south, the Rheingau lies across the Rhine to the north, and the Nahe wine region to the west. Known as the "land of the thousand hills", the terrain is undulating with vineyards mixed with orchards and other forms of farming. Its larger towns include: Mainz, Worms, Bingen, Alzey, Nieder-Olm and Ingelheim.
In general the wines are best nearest the Rhine, where the soils impart more complex flavours. The best known area for white wines is the so-called Rhine Terrace (Rheinterasse; sometimes Rhine Front, Rheinfront) between Oppenheim and Nackenheim, which by itself is bigger than the whole of the Rheingau. A part of the Rhine Terrace, between Nackenheim and Nierstein is known as the Red Slope (Roter Hang) because of the presence of red slate. The main red grape area is around Ingelheim, in the north of the region opposite the Rheingau.
Grapes have been grown in the region since Roman times, and viticulture was promoted by Charlemagne. The denomination Glöck is documented by a deed of donation from the year 742, it is the oldest appellation in Germany.
When the owners of Stadecken-Elsheim the Counts of Katzenelnbogen first cultivated Riesling in 1435 they called the wine from this part of their county the Wine from the Gau. At the Congress of Vienna in 1814/15, Louis I, Grand Duke of Hesse, was awarded with Rhenish Hesse as compensation for the loss of his Westphalian territories. As a result, he amended his title to "Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine" and the name of the region was created.
Liebfrauenmilch is named after the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in Worms, which also was the name of a good and famous vineyard. Later, Liebfrauenmilch was used as a name for a semi-sweet wine style produced in several German regions, and became responsible for much of the erosion of the German wines' reputation on the export market. The most famous Liebfraumilch brand, until they changed their classification, was Blue Nun which was created in 1921. Today, no quality-oriented top producer in Rheinhessen would dare to produce a Liebfrauenmilch for fear of losing their reputation." - info from Wikipedia.

Bekonscot in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, is the oldest original model village in the world. It portrays aspects of England mostly dating from the 1930s.
Bekonscot was first created by a Beaconsfield resident, accountant Roland Callingham (1881–1961), in the 1920s. He developed the master plan for his miniature empire as an addition to his large back garden, drawing in help from his staff: the gardener, cook, maid and chauffeur. Together they developed the model landscape portraying rural England at the time. The swimming pool became the first "sea" and the undulating rockeries were built up as hills. Bassett-Lowke, the large-scale model railway manufacturers, were commissioned to build an extensive Gauge 1 railway network for the project. Callingham named the village 'Bekonscot' after Beaconsfield and Ascot where he previously lived.
Bekonscot was not conceived as a commercial visitor attraction but as a plaything to entertain Callingham and his guests. It was only after 1930 that its existence became widely known, catching the imagination of the press and public alike. Frequent newsreels such as Pathé, international, and national newspaper coverage ensured a steady stream of visitors, all of whom were invited to make a donation to the Railway Benevolent Institution.
Bekonscot has been run by the Church Army since 1978 and donates large amounts of money to charity. It has raised the equivalent of almost £5,000,000 so far and has been visited by more than 14,000,000 visitors.
Legacy
Bekonscot is acknowledged to be the inspiration for many other model villages and miniature parks across the world, including Babbacombe, Southport, Tucktonia, Madurodam, Bourton-on-the-Water, Wimborne, Great Yarmouth, Clonakilty and Mini-Europe. As such, it is regarded as the "grandfather" of the model village and miniature park movement.
The village expanded in size throughout the first half of the 20th century. Callingham sold off much of the land surrounding the model village, all of which is now a housing estate. The village is now entirely surrounded by urban development so further expansion is impossible.
Bekonscot popularised the miniature park movement, put Beaconsfield on the map and has a continuing financial legacy in donations to charitable organisations both national and local.
Miniature landscape
The site is approximately two acres of which just over half is a miniature 1:12 landscape. Buildings are constructed in natural materials, concrete, or dense foamboard; many are originals from the 1920s.
There are six model villages set within the miniature landscape. These are entirely fictional towns, but many buildings within them are based on UK prototypes. Successive generations of modelmakers, gardeners and craftsmen have left their mark on their subjects, which display a wide range of vernacular architectural styles.
Currently there are 12 full-time staff who maintain the village throughout the year; during the open season a further 20 or so seasonal staff are employed.
Names of shops and other features include humorous puns, such as Lee Key Plumbers' Merchants ('Lee Key' = 'leaky'), Sam and Ella's Butchers ('salmonella') and the Mark Owney Wireless and Gramophone stores ('Marconi'). Other model villages have run with the playful nature of the miniature business names and it has become something of a model tradition.
Over the last year, an ongoing project to introduce more – smaller – moving models into the village has been underway. So far these have included a waving coal miner, a lady cleaning her window, a miniature children's play area, walking horses at a cider works, and even a painter falling from a ladder.

Cornelius Cruser House (1722, additions 1770 and 1836)
1262 Richmond Terr.
Livingston
West New Brighton, Staten Island
The original one-room cottage (at the extreme left) was built for Cornelius Van Santvoord (1696–1752) , a Dutch Reformed minister. He had recently married Annetje Staats (1700–40) in 1721. They sold the house and moved to Schenectady around 1740–42.
Cornelius Cruser (1708–86) bought the property in 1751 and built the central addition. His wife was Belitje de Groot (1727–1815). Later his son John Cruser and his wife Mary Tooker owned the house.
Loyalist General Cortlandt Skinner (1727–99) used the house as his headquarters during the Revolutionary War. The Crusers and their in-laws were divided between revolutionary and loyalist sympathies.
Daniel Pelton (1788–1867) bought the house in 1835. He married Catherine Cortelyou van Arsdale (1788–1862) in 1813. He built the brick addition in 1836. He was an abolitionist and may have used the house as part of the Underground Railroad.

A semi-new addition to the gardens is this small side garden called the Ottoman Garden. Wonderful mosaic tile work and a quiet fountain adorn this garden. The entrance here is very inviting so I couldn't help but set up the tripod. Tomorrow we head inside to see what we find. Enjoy!

History
Today's Prague Central Railway Station was founded in 1871 on the route of the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Bahn which was extended from Vienna via Budweis to the north and was initially called the Kaiser Franz Joseph Railway Station (Nádraží císaře Františka Josefa). In the years 1901-1909 - besides the technical extensions - the handling facilities were converted to the today's magnificent Art Nouveau building according to the design of the important architect Josef Fanta. After the First World War, the station was renamed after the American President Woodrow Wilson into Wilson station (Wilsonovo nádraží). Both under the German occupation (1939-1945) and from 1953 it was listending to the name of Hlavní nádraží (Central Station) and it kept this name also after 1989, although the renaming in Wilsonovo nádraží was discussed.
Renovation and modernization
In connection with the construction of the Prague subway, the central station around 1970 received a new, two-part, partially built into the slope entrance hall. Since then, the station is accessible from the street Washingtonova. In the first part of the hall are the accesses to the platforms of the line C which was put into operation in 1974, behind are the ticket counters. Stairs lead to the second part of the hall, this one primarily used as a waiting area. From here you can reach the train platforms via the pedestrian tunnel. The roof surfaces of the entrance hall are used as parking areas for motor vehicles, moreover, the expressway Wilsonova is leading above there.
In 1994 three other platforms with the numbers 5 to 7 were put into operation outside the hall.
Around a century after the construction, also the reception building of the main station urgently had to be renovated. In December 2006 the reconstruction began, based on the proposals of the Czech architect Patrik Kotas. The total cost is estimated to be about 1.6 billion Czech crowns (about 66 million euro). The Italian company Grandi Stazioni, a subsidiary of the Italian national railways, which is provided the station building for 30 years, manages and finances the conversion. The building is to be restored in the secession style and comprehensively modernized. The station will largely turn into a shopping center.
In addition to the modernization of the building, the direct access routes from north and north east have also been newly built since 2004. With the project of the New Connection (Nové spojení), the main station was connected directly to Holešovice station, bypassing Masarykovo nádraží station.
Geschichte

The beautiful new Post Office and Federal Building makes an impressive addition to the Civic Center of Los Angeles. All the United States District Courts, Post Office and Federal Departments are in this building.
MANUFACTURED BY LONGSHAW CARD CO., LOS ANGELES, CALIF.
Postmarked July 6, 1951, at Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California; addressed to (I think) Mrs. W. J. Cargel at 59 Midday St. in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts.
I can’t quite figure out how this postcard was used. It’s clear that it was first mailed on October 21, 1950, by Mrs. Helmer Swanson at 1332 West 29th Street in L.A., to someone named Mary somewhere in Missouri.
The next summer someone in Cardiff-by-the-Sea remailed the card with new postage, confusingly using a Parcel Post return-address label for the destination address (presumably) and including no message except for the largely obscured one from the previous year. At first, I wondered if this *was* meant to be a return address, that maybe the whole thing was affixed to the top-left corner of a package being sent via parcel post. But there’s no evidence it was glued or taped to anything, and the two ½¢ Ben Franklin prexies would be unnecessary.
Please feel free to post any ideas you might have in the comments.

Prior to the opening of Ringaskiddy Ferry Port, car ferries sailed from here; now, the Ro-Ro ramp is used by companies importing cars into Ireland. In addition to the ferry terminal, Ringaskiddy has a deep water port.
