St. George’s was built in the 16th century, with additions in the 18th and 19th. It was then replaced with a larger parish church, but remains consecrated, in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. This is the monument to Princess Charlotte, daughter of George IV and heir to the throne, who died in childbirth aged 18. Had she lived she would have become queen, and there would have been no Queen Victoria.
This is what Charles Harper had to say, in 1902 (not long after Victoria died).
The old church of Esher, long since disused and kept locked and given over to spiders and dust, has a Royal Pew, built for the use of the Princess Charlotte and the Claremont household in 1816. It is a huge structure, in comparison with the size of the little church, and designed in the worst possible classic taste ; wearing, indeed, more the appearance of an opera -box than anything else.
The authorities (whoever they may be) charge a shilling for viewing this derelict church. It is distinctly not worth the money, because the architecture is contemptible, and all the interesting monuments have been removed to the modern building, on a quite different site, across the road.
It cannot be too strongly insisted upon that the death of the Princess Charlotte in her eighteenth year made a vast difference in English history or, at least, English Court history. Had she survived, there would have been no William the Fourth, and Queen Victoria would never have been queen. Think of it ! No Victorian Era, no Victoria Station, no Victoria Embankment, no Victoria in Australia, no Victoria in Vancouver Island ; and, in short, none of those thousand things and places "Victoria" and "Victorian" we are surrounded with. None of those, and certainly no Albert Halls, memorials, streets, and places commemorative of that paragon of men.
I arrived just as a nice lady was locking up at the end of the day. However, she very kindly kept it open for quarter of an hour, gave me a quick tour, and showed me the best places to photograph. Things have improved since 1902.

Domeland Wilderness (BLM addition) is adjacent to the Sequoia National Forest portion of the original Domelands Wilderness and consists of pinyon-covered mountains along the eastern side of the Kern River's South Fork drainage. A long, narrow, sage-covered valley runs along the eastern edge of the wilderness. Rugged topography, perennial streams, variable terrain, and mixed vegetation offer outstanding opportunities for solitude and unconfined recreation. Hiking and horseback riding trails offer spectacular routes through this pristine wilderness.

Another view of this great Victorian house. Built - 1871. It sits directly behind the old Trinity Episcopal Church and as it turns out it was the Trinity Parish House. The structure was moved to this site to make room for the church building. The picturesquely massed frame house was built by Reuben Porter for local newspaperman Carroll Earll Smith. The multicolored tile roof with an elaborate ornate cornice, pointed-arch openings and Eastlake detailing distinguish the building. When the church was built Trinity Episcopal Church bought the building for use as a parish house. It looks as if additions were added on behind the house. The site is now owned by the Faith By Love Church. Located at 523 West Onondaga Street in Syracuse, NY. (behind the church building). (271)
In addition to Tom Mayo's putting me up while in England, John Randle was also incredibly generous throughout my trip.
Another view of Fountain Elms, the home of Helen Munson Williams and her husband James Watson Williams. The house was a gift from Helen's father, Alfred Munson. The simple Italianate design of Fountain Elms was selected in part because James and Helen Williams envisioned the possibility of making additions to the house. Three additions were constructed by members of the family and a fourth was made by the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in 1960. Recent renovations have helped preserve the building and return it to a close approximation of its appearance in the 1850s. A standing-seam copper roof was installed and the house's bricks were stripped of their many layers of old paint. The building was then repainted with sanded paint in the original colors of buff with the russet trim. This Victorian painting techinique was intended to protect the porous bricks from the elements and to fireproof the building. The sanded paint also served the aesthetic purpose of making the brick and wood look like stone. The front of the house is devoid of any paintings, in accordance with mid-19th-century customs. It was believed that foundation plantings would conflict with the harmonious blending of the exterior facade. Fountain Elms belongs to the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute. Located at 310 Genesee Street in Utica, NY. (38)

Key Bank Building. 1915, 1924 - Architects: Mobray and Uffinger, New York - Addition: 1928, T. Walter Gaggin, Syracuse - Renovation of interior: circa 1960, Hawley McFee, Syracuse -- Originally built in May of 1915 as the First National Bank. Within five years, a merger turned it into the old First Trust and Deposit Company, the name it kept until it turned into Key Bank in 1980. This Neo-classical Revival style building now serves as Key Bank's Central New York district headquarters. The bank's history goes back to 1832 because it regards the Bank of Salina as its ancestor. The building is of steel-frame construction and faced with granite, marble and terra cotta. The pedimented entrance is flanked by modified Corinthian columns. The Fluted pilasters articulate the facades and lions' heads embellish the attic level, which is faced with terra cotta tiles. The size of the building was doubled when additions were made to the south. In the early 1960s, interior renovations included the addition of a mezzanine, the covering of plaster columns (they are now encased in wood due to being damaged by a fire) and a fourth-floor remodeling. Key Bank has added a colorful new decorative LED lighting scheme to its exterior. It has at least 45 potential variations in color. Two of which are, orange and blue for when Syracuse University has a big game and red and green during the Christmas season. The lights will illuminate the detailed cornice -- replete with lion's heads -- atop all three walls that face city streets. The lights will also illuminate an entire eastern wall, visible from City Hall, Washington Street and from an adjacent parking lot where the old Yates Hotel once stood. Located at 201 South Warren Street in Syracuse, NY. (S3/64)

Flagstaff, AZ (Coconino County)
The city of Flagstaff is located on the high Coconino Plateau of northern Arizona at an altitude of 6,905 feet. Surrounded by the Ponderosa pines of the Coconino National Forest, the city is situated between Mars Hill, a low mesa to the west, and Mount Elden, a 9,280 foot promontory to the northeast. Directly to the north, the San Francisco Peaks rise to 12,611 feet, the highest point in Arizona.
The Railroad Addition encompasses the commercial core of the city of Flagstaff. Architecturally, it is a grouping of Victorian-era commercial blocks, many constructed of local tufa stone. The scale is predominantly one story, punctuated with large public buildings.
To spur commercial activity, the community undertook two major projects made possible by the designation of the Grand Canyon as a National Park in 1918. First, a competition was held for the design of a new railroad depot (FHR 150) which was subsequently constructed at the foot of Leroux Street. (1)

"Mainz Cathedral or St. Martin's Cathedral (German: Mainzer Dom, Martinsdom or, officially, Der Hohe Dom zu Mainz) is located near the historical center and pedestrianized market square of the city of Mainz, Germany. This 1000-year-old Roman Catholic cathedral is the site of the episcopal see of the Bishop of Mainz.
Mainz Cathedral is predominantly Romanesque in style, but later exterior additions over many centuries have resulted in the appearance of various architectural influences seen today. It comprises three aisles and stands under the patronage of Saint Martin of Tours. The eastern quire is dedicated to Saint Stephen.
The interior of the cathedral houses tombs and funerary monuments of former powerful Electoral-prince-archbishops, or Kurfürst-Erzbischöfe, of the diocese and contains religious works of art spanning a millennium. The cathedral also has a central courtyard and statues of Saint Boniface and The Madonna on its grounds.
During the time of Mainz Archbishop Willigis (975–1011), the city of Mainz flourished economically, and Willigis became one of the most influential politicians of that time, ascending to regent of the empire between 991 and 994. In 975–976 shortly after his installation he ordered the construction of a new cathedral in the pre-Romanesque Ottonian architecture style. This new and impressive building was part of his vision of Mainz as the "second Rome".
This new cathedral was to take over the functions of two churches: the old cathedral and St. Alban's, which was the largest church in the area, belonging to a Benedictine abbey and serving as the burial ground for the bishops and other nobles, including Fastrada, a spouse of Charlemagne. Most of the synods and other important meetings were held at St. Alban's Abbey.
The new cathedral consisted of a double chancel with two transepts. The main hall was built in the typical triple-nave "cross" pattern. As was usual at that time no vault was included because of structural difficulties relating to the size of the building. Six towers rose from the church. A cloister was enclosed in the structure and a small freestanding church, St. Mary's Church, connected by a colonnade. This small church developed later into the collegiate church of St. Maria ad Gradus.
Sandstone was used as the primary building material for the cathedral. The inside was plastered white under the Archbishop Bardo, probably in the middle of the 11th century. During renovations ordered by Henry IV in the late 11th century, much of the outside was also plastered, but the cornices were left exposed in their original red and yellow. It is believed that the coloring of the cathedral was changed on a number of occasions, but no further documentation of the coloring is available until records of the Baroque works.
The cathedral suffered extensive damage from a fire on the day of its inauguration in 1009. Archbishop Bardo (Bardo of Oppershofen) presided over the completion of the cathedral begun under Willigis. By 1037 the main portions of the body of Mainz Cathedral were complete. Willigis was buried in the second church he had initiated, St. Stephan's, in 1011.
Mainz, previously known in English as Mentz or Mayence, is the capital and largest city of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Mainz is on the left bank of the Rhine, opposite the place where the Main joins the Rhine. Downstream of the confluence, the Rhine flows to the north-west, with Mainz on the left bank, and Wiesbaden, the capital of the neighbouring state Hesse, on the right bank.
Mainz is an independent city with a population of 219,501 and forms part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region.
Mainz was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC as a military fortress on the northernmost frontier of the empire and provincial capital of Germania Superior. Mainz became an important city in the 8th century AD as part of the Holy Roman Empire, capital of the Electorate of Mainz and seat of the Archbishop-Elector of Mainz, the Primate of Germany. Mainz is famous as the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of a movable-type printing press, who in the early 1450s manufactured his first books in the city, including the Gutenberg Bible. Mainz was heavily damaged in World War II; more than 30 air raids destroyed around half of the old town in the city centre, but many buildings were rebuilt post-war.
Mainz is notable as a transport hub, for wine production, and for its many rebuilt historic buildings. One of the ShUM-cities, Mainz and its Jewish cemetery is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Rheinhessen (in English often Rhine-Hesse or Rhenish Hesse) is the largest of 13 German wine regions (Weinanbaugebiete) for quality wines (QbA and Prädikatswein) with 26,758 hectares (66,120 acres) under cultivation in 2018. Named for the traditional region of Rhenish Hesse, it lies on the left bank of the Rhine between Worms and Bingen in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Despite its historic name it is currently no longer part of the federal-state of Hesse, this being the case since the end of World War II. There have been several unsuccessful attempts to legally reunite the former wine growing districts of Mainz on the Hessian side during the post-war area. Rheinhessen produces mostly white wine from a variety of grapes, particularly Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner, and is best known as the home of Liebfraumilch, although some previously underrated Rieslings are also made, increasingly in a powerful dry style.
The wine region is a member of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network.
The Rhine forms the eastern and northern boundary of the region, with the river Nahe to the west and the Haardt Mountains to the south. The Palatinate wine region lies to the south, the Rheingau lies across the Rhine to the north, and the Nahe wine region to the west. Known as the "land of the thousand hills", the terrain is undulating with vineyards mixed with orchards and other forms of farming. Its larger towns include: Mainz, Worms, Bingen, Alzey, Nieder-Olm and Ingelheim.
In general the wines are best nearest the Rhine, where the soils impart more complex flavours. The best known area for white wines is the so-called Rhine Terrace (Rheinterasse; sometimes Rhine Front, Rheinfront) between Oppenheim and Nackenheim, which by itself is bigger than the whole of the Rheingau. A part of the Rhine Terrace, between Nackenheim and Nierstein is known as the Red Slope (Roter Hang) because of the presence of red slate. The main red grape area is around Ingelheim, in the north of the region opposite the Rheingau.
Grapes have been grown in the region since Roman times, and viticulture was promoted by Charlemagne. The denomination Glöck is documented by a deed of donation from the year 742, it is the oldest appellation in Germany.
When the owners of Stadecken-Elsheim the Counts of Katzenelnbogen first cultivated Riesling in 1435 they called the wine from this part of their county the Wine from the Gau. At the Congress of Vienna in 1814/15, Louis I, Grand Duke of Hesse, was awarded with Rhenish Hesse as compensation for the loss of his Westphalian territories. As a result, he amended his title to "Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine" and the name of the region was created.
Liebfrauenmilch is named after the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in Worms, which also was the name of a good and famous vineyard. Later, Liebfrauenmilch was used as a name for a semi-sweet wine style produced in several German regions, and became responsible for much of the erosion of the German wines' reputation on the export market. The most famous Liebfraumilch brand, until they changed their classification, was Blue Nun which was created in 1921. Today, no quality-oriented top producer in Rheinhessen would dare to produce a Liebfrauenmilch for fear of losing their reputation." - info from Wikipedia.
Summer 2019 I did a solo cycling tour across Europe through 12 countries over the course of 3 months. I began my adventure in Edinburgh, Scotland and finished in Florence, Italy cycling 8,816 km. During my trip I took 47,000 photos.

Abydos dates back to the dawn of Ancient Egyptian civilisation when it was established as the cult centre of the god of the Netherworld Osiris and the burial site for a number of the earliest kings. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abydos,_Egypt
Over the centuries several temples were constructed at the site on the edge of the desert, the Great Osiris Temple being at the heart of the god's cult but little remains of this structure. What visitors come to Abydos to see today are the far more substantial remains of the New Kingdom temples built by Seti I and his son Ramesses II.
Some distance to the north of the Temple of Seti I lies the much smaller temple of his son Ramesses II (who decided to add his own temple in addition to finishing his father's). This is much less well preserved than the main temple, with the walls only standing up to around three metres high, but much of the relief decoration of these lower courses remains, and much of the vivid colouring is beautifully preserved.
The temple is reached by exiting the main temple at the rear where the Osireon sits and turning right, walking a short distance across desert. An armed escort led the way for us, which was also helpful as the low-lying ruins are hidden from view by sand dunes until one is almost upon them.
A caretaker unlocked the gates and left us free to wander inside and enjoy the remaining relief decoration. Many of the scenes are tragically incomplete, with the upper parts (often including the heads of larger figures and further scenes above) missing, but what remains gives a good impression of the former richness of this smaller temple, and the surviving colour is extraordinarily rich. Most of this is concentrated in the sequence of chambers towards the rear of the temple.
Abydos is one of Egypt's most important sites, both historically and artistically and will richly reward the visitor.
