In the heart of fiery whispers
Where earth's pulse beats
A crater lake sleeps
Veiled in ethereal mists' sheets.
Where shadows dance on waters still
And whispers softly kiss
In this volcanic embrace
A realm of mystery and bliss.

On top of the Vesuvius. A walk around the Gran Cono. Panorama of the crater of the Vesuvius (1,281 m.).
The Vesuvius is famously known for its catastrophic eruption in AD 79 that buried the ancient cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii.
While visiting the Amalfi Coast, the weather promised to be very good for a visit to the top of the Vesuvius. It was a perfect day; sunny, no wind and nice temperature.
The summit of Vesuvius is open to visitors, and there is a small network of paths around the cone of the volcano. There is access by road to within 200 metres (660 ft) of the summit (measured vertically), but after that, access is on foot only. There is a spiral walkway around the volcano from the road to the crater.
Going up the path of the Gran Cono is a unique experience, for the thrill of walking along the crater of an active volcano and for the view of Campania and Lazio you can enjoy.
Mount Vesuvius is a somma–stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 km (5.6 mi) east of Naples and a short distance from the shore.
The night I spent into the active volcano Erta Ale was one of the most touching I’ve experienced in my life. I really couldn’t stop watching at the red magma boiling inside the caldera not more than 50 meters far below my feet, and smelling the intense, sulphuric steam in the air.

This really does need to be seen large and on black! Really!
Yes, I know it's a bit of an arty title, but then again, it's a bit of an arty shot!
This is actually a rarely taken scene from a hugely popular location - Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in Indonesia, containing Mount Bromo, a currently active volcano.
Sometimes, where there is a violent volcanic eruption, the ground left can collapse, leaving a massive crater knows as a caldera. In this particular one, the Tengger Caldera, it also left five smaller volcanoes in the middle of it; Mount Bromo being the most popular of these.
The land inside the caldera is mostly barren landscape, known as The Sea of Sand, the edges of which can rise up to 600 metres. It was on one of these high edges that I saw this wonderful scene.
Everyone was busy snapping away at the sunrise hitting Mount Bromo (and the other volcanoes) in the middle, whereas I had turned my back to see what was happening behind us.
The low, rising sun was streaming across this tree-filled plain on the lush ground surrounding the caldera. That, coupled with the low-lying clouds in the basin meant that the beams of light from between the trees became very prominent.
At the time when I took this shot, I knew I'd like it, but I wasn't too sure how to process it. I tried black and white first and bingo, that was the one. This is pretty much straight out of camera with just some monochroming, slight denoising, slight selective sharpening and some contrast work.
I think this shot is a love it or hate it shot, but I hope you love it as I do!

After living here for nearly a decade and a half, occasionally I still find places that take my breath away. This view of Sakurajima from high above Kagoshima Bay is one of them. Taken on an iPhone 12 Pro Max, processed with VSCO with t1 preset.

This is a color photograph of the (actively volcanic) islet called Nea Kammenē (aka Nea Kamenē in Greek: Νέα Καμμένη) as viewed from Fira (Phēra, Φηρά). The islet's area is 35,930 ft² (3.34 km²) and its peak is 417 ft (127 m) high; the islet lies to the West of Santorini (aka Thēra, Θήρα) Island, Greece. Thērasia Island is partly viewed in the background on the right. The smaller and older volcanic islet called Palaea Kammenē lies farther than Nea Kammenē (partly hidden behind the latter). Akrotēri or the southernmost tip of Santorini Isl. is seen on the left.
Nea Kammenē was formed by volcanic eruptions in the 1570s. Repeated volcanic activity occurred there again in 1707–1711, in 1866–1870, in 1925–1928, in 1939–1941 and in 1950. Mild volcanic activity has never ceased: the islet has been closely monitored by scientists as an active volcano and is usually daily visited by tourists in the summer.
The major volcanic eruption in the wider area probably took place on Thēra Isl. c.1615 BC according to radiocarbon dating; prior to the eruption the ancient island had been called “Strongylē” (Στρογγύλη meaning “Circular or Round one”) as well as “Kallistē” (Καλλίστη meaning “Most Beautiful”).
Mount ASO is an active volcano in the center of Kyushu. Its ancient caldera ranks among the world's largest, with a diameter of up to 25 kilometers and a circumference of over 100 kilometers. During times of heightened volcanic activity, the crater can be off-limits, the ropeway not operating, and the road and walking trail to the crater closed.

Massive Mutnovsky, (Мутновский) one of the most active volcanoes of southern Kamchatka, is formed of four coalescing stratovolcanoes of predominately basaltic composition. Multiple summit craters cap the volcanic complex.
