Descending into the active crater of Kawah Ijen in East Java, I was confronted by one of Earth's most alien landscapes. The toxic sulfur gases create this otherworldly palette of yellows and greens while the acidic environment has bleached and corroded the volcanic rock into fantastic formations.

The small figures scattered across the crater floor provide crucial scale to this immense geological theater, reminding me of the incredible courage of the sulfur miners who work in these harsh conditions daily. Standing here required protective gear against the caustic fumes, yet local workers navigate this environment with remarkable resilience to harvest sulfur deposits.

What struck me most was the paradox of beauty and danger - this landscape is simultaneously spectacular and lethal. The colorful gas emissions that create such visual drama are the same toxic clouds that make prolonged exposure impossible without proper protection.

My intention was to document this extraordinary volcanic environment while paying respect to both the geological forces that created it and the human determination of those who work within it. Kawah Ijen represents nature at its most extreme, where the Earth's interior processes create conditions that challenge human endurance while producing landscapes of haunting, toxic beauty.

You, take me away

Past the clouds and into space

I day dream about that place

And if I'm lost,

I'm lost with you

Looking SW at this majestic peak from the Sunrise Rim trail.

Ascending to 14,410 feet above sea level, Mount Rainier stands as an icon in the Washington landscape. An active volcano, Mount Rainier is the most glaciated peak in the contiguous U.S.A., spawning six major rivers. Subalpine wildflower meadows ring the icy volcano while ancient forest cloaks Mount Rainier’s lower slopes.

Mount Rainier has a topographic prominence of 13,211 ft (4,027 m), which is greater than that of K2, the world's second-tallest mountain, at 13,179 ft (4,017 m). It is the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States.

Mt. Rainier is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. May she continue to slumber peacefully for a loooong time.

Thanks for taking a peek at this special peak.

A view of active venting from the volcano taken as were flying back from a visit to Mexico City. The brown haze is more the result of the city than the volcano!

I have not taken as many geologically-themed photos in recent years, so I want to dedicate this one to subarcticmike, the principal admin and powerhouse behind the Earth Science Teaching Resource group on Flickr [www.flickr.com/groups/earth_science_teaching_resource/].

Cheers Mike for all your hard work!

Looks like I now have a scheduled meeting with Volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland.

While I did plan my 2021 eruption visit, I was here by coincidence during the 2022 eruption and the 2023 one.

So what I thought was a once-in-a-lifetime event, turned out to be a thrice-in-a-lifetime one.

Mt ASO sits in the center of Japan's southern island of Kyushu. Aso's old crater rim stretches 128 km in circumference and is claimed by the Japanese to be the largest active volcano on earth. The raw beauty of the countryside combined with the rich bounty of the land has made the area a natural paradise. Enjoy my Slideshow on Japan

From the rim of Mt Ijen, one can see the most acidic lake that looks green, 800m down

From the rim of Mt Ijen, one can also see the hardship of the sulfur miners who have to walk up the challenging path, with heavy load of sulfur

From the rim of Mt Ijen as well, one can see the contrast of insignificant human beings and the great nature. How the latter constantly poses tough challenges, and how human beings, in this case, sulfur miners endure and overcome the challenges

Standing at the rim of Mt Ijen is like putting one in an amphitheater, to witness a great 'show'

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park/East Java/Indonesia (Mount Bromo is an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif. At 2,329 metres (7,641 ft) it is not the highest peak of the massif, but is the most well known. The name of Bromo derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god.

Mount Bromo sits in the middle of a plain called the "Sea of Sand", a protected nature reserve since 1919. The best view- point is on Mount Penanjakan (2,770 m or 9,088 ft)...).

This photo was taken at Marunuma Lake, which is located in Katashina Village, Gumma Prefecture, very near the borderline with Oku-Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. The lake, at the altitude of 1430 meters, is so-called dammed lake, which was formed by the volcanic eruption of Mt Nikko-Shirane, 2578 meters high and an active volcano. The lake is a part of Nikko National Park.

Many of Norris’ features release acidic water. Living organisms thrive even in the extreme environments of these acidic hot springs! The overflow channels of geysers and hot springs are often brightly colored with minerals and microscopic life forms. Hardy, microscopic, lime-green Cyanidium algae thrive in these warm acid waters. Orange cyanobacteria may be found in the runoff streams in Porcelain Basin. From a distance, these bacteria look like rusty, iron-rich mineral deposits.

Another old shot from one of our earlier trips to beautiful northern California. Mt Shasta and the nearby areas are some of our favorite spots in California and this area has everything a for a landscape photographer. There are massive mountain peaks of Shasta and Lassen, numerous waterfalls including some of the biggest on the west coast etc. During this visit, a huge winter storm passed by the area and we experienced rain on almost every day.

I have learned that rainstorms are not all doom and gloom but provide some unique opportunities to photographers. One of the best after effect of rain is mini lakes that they create everywhere. I took this shot by the highway near Shasta airport which is usually an unremarkable spot you pass by on Rt 5. But on this morning the rain relented a bit and the puddle provided me with excellent reflections. Unfortunately, the storm outlasted our time there and I was not able to witness my other favorite opportunity of winter storms, the clearing storm.

Mount ASO is an active volcano in the center of Kyushu. Its ancient caldera ranks among the world's largest, with a diameter of up to 25 kilometers and a circumference of over 100 kilometers. During times of heightened volcanic activity, the crater can be off-limits, the ropeway not operating, and the road and walking trail to the crater closed.

The mighty, the sacred, the eternally mysterious - central to the identity of Japan and her people.

For me, a pilgrimage of sorts; to finally stand before this most beautiful of natural wonders, a deeply moving 24 hours in my life. Fuji-san leaves one breathless and bewildered. Parting earth and sky with remarkable symmetry, its beauty beyond description in text or letter, no poem powerful enough to create the emotion in one's heart and mind upon seeing for the first time, in person and close at hand.

I arose the second morning at 5am to witness first light falling on the sleeping giant, and the sunrise upon Lake Kawaguchiko before me. This wonderful view was enjoyed from our balcony with its own private onsen, at the hotel Kukuna. Highly recommended.

Caught this early morning sunrise on my way to visit my brother-in-law. Mount Ruapehu is an active stratovolcano at the southern end of the Taupo Volcanic Zone in New Zealand. It is the largest active volcano in New Zealand, is the highest point in the North Island and has three major peaks: Tahurangi (2,797 m), Te Heuheu (2,755 m) and Paretetaitonga (2,751 m).

This lighting only lasted for a couple of minutes after I set up my tripod, then the sun went behind the clouds.

Got to open my eyes to everything

You can't just leave me

Breathe into me and make me real

((Etna Protocol – Southern Slope, November 2193)

At dawn, the crater reveals its true form.

What the night kept hidden, the light slowly unveils: a mineral amphitheatre, where matter seems to speak through subtle, barely hinted tones.

That red, that ochre—unexpected chromatic nuances emerge like veins across the dark surface.

A contrast that no longer seems to belong to this world, now silent, abandoned by humankind.

The large boulder in the center appears like an ancient heart—foreign, yet inevitably bound to the landscape.

The wind is still, but something breathes beneath our feet.

The feeling that every step we take is being welcomed, recorded, and perhaps remembered, is palpable.

In these visible layers, we read the volcano’s memory—a silent chronicle of events that predate all human civilization.

Nothing moves, and yet everything feels alive, waiting.

Perhaps time itself, here, has paused to listen.

We’ve decided to stay a little longer.

The probe is active and records almost imperceptible frequencies—testimony of a world that, while seemingly motionless, has never ceased to change.

Something tells us that what we came to find is not far now.

- Gustav Mahler.

Another shot from our northern California road trip. After driving straight up 9 hours we reached Dunsimuir, CA around the evening just to see an approaching storm completely engulf the whole area in low rain clouds. And incessant rain long with thick cloud cover completely blocked Mt Shasta and ruined any chance of a sunset shot. We were dreading the whole weekend as our weather apps suddenly changes their forecast from partially cloudy to full-fledged storm.

I still woke up before sunrise and forced my very reluctant wife to join me in the wet morning hoping against hope to see some sunrise light. We didn’t get the sunrise shot we hoped but we met with Bubba Suess of hikemtshasta.com (which by the way has a wealth of info, if you are ever in the area), who gave us some absolutely awesome locations to shoot Mt Shasta. He told us about the temporary pools that form near the exit close to Weed airport that gives a good reflection of the 14,000ft mountain. So we headed there when we got some cloud clear and the view was totally amazing. As I was waiting for clouds to clear a bit, I noticed a small airplane approaching the run way right into my frame and I didn’t wait any time framing this shot. Which is totally unbelievable for me as I am not usually anywhere close to this lucky. Hope everyone likes this shot, thanks for visiting.
