Wittenberge is a town in northeast Brandenburg, halfway between Berlin and Hamburg, on the shore of the Elbe and the small river Stepenitz. Founded in the beginning of the 13th century, it took a rapid development from the middle of the 19th century due to the railway connection and the Elbe port. Major industrial companies settled down here, the most important being the Singer sewing machine plants in 1903 that, turned into a state owned company (but never formally expropriated) in the late 1940s, continued production under the label Veritas. Almost all major industries were closed after the German reunification leading to a considerable population drain. In 1980, Wittenberge had more than 30.000 inhabitants, little more than half of them are left: 17.000. This explains why so many houses are empty, why there are strange voids between houses even in the very centre. But new industries have come in the last years and the town seems to be recuperating. One example is the Heisterbusch Quarter, built between 1900 and 1914 with houses mainly in the Art Nouveau style and some others in that of historism. This quarter, degraded and neglected until recent years, has largely regained its former splendour.
