Nature, the original printmaker. The tannins in fallen leaves and stems have stained a short section of sidewalk in Emeryville, California.
By chance I stumbled upon the most lovely long stemmed roses at a local farmers market today. I felt they deserved a portrait session where they could really shine :)

at Hidcote garden. Most of this plant had been battered by wind, rain and the sheer weight of the blooms on their stalks. These blooms at the top still proudly looked up to the light.
While on our 3 week June trip from KC to California we spent 4 days near Yosemite for a wedding. The extended family visited the park a couple of times to take in the sights and for hikes. These youngsters were along one of the hikes. My wife and eldest let out a few awes while the youngest (13 years old) took a couple of photos including this one.
Yess, that's true! Finally the first descendant of third generation of my extended family of parrots is born! And, surprirse, someone could still remember the photos of a lutin baby cockatiel, called Albin that I shared last year... (Will put some thumbnails here below in the comment boxes). Well, Albin grew older, we discovered she's a female, she fell in love with Principessa, last child of the first brood of my couple of cockatiels Yuki and Tina, the smallest one, ancestral, so small that we thought it was a female, instead, he begun to sing and speak and kept actually very small. Principessa just weights 70 grams around, about 30/40 gr less than his siblings!
Principessa fell likewise in love with Albin and they decided to go live together and try to have children. They got some eggs last seasons and hatched them but no chicks were born. Finally this time they got one baby!
He is born on Sat. Sept. 17 2022, and, guess what, he is Lutin, almost identical as his Mom Albin, so for sure he is a male :-)
Today he is 3 weeks and I took his first official portrait just yesterday, arranging some daisies picked up from my backyard, remembering I also had photographed his Mom Albin among the daisies outside. It was kinda cold yesterday and didn't want to bring him outside in the garden, so I arranged the daisies in my studio.
Oh, the name... We called him PRIMO as he is the very first one of the 3rd generation! The heir !
Therefore, he made the parents of Principessa, Yuki and Tina, grandparents! Yeah!
Primo is as beautiful as his Mom Albin and very very hungry, always, he actually could keep eating with no rest!
He is light yellow with deep yellow/orange cheeks & crest and he has red eyes.

Lost in the spell of music. Anonymous in sound. Self-portrait.
Yes, yes, the giant umbrella would have been the go-to tool. When crouching on the floor, I'm roughly the same size.
But. I wanted sharp drop-off. Slivers of light. Lots of darkness to create a lost, darkened face. Like a husk of hair and contorted limbs will be what's left/come to mind when I'm dead. And after far too many years being beauty dish-less, it has triumphantly retuned; now I remember the obsession. Almost directly overhead on a boom, sock diffuser with a speed light inside. Second bare flash with teal gel CR angled at the background to create a streaky beam, underwater feel. Radio trigger.
Bit of .jpeg compression makes the whites in my hands look blown out, but they are indeed not blown out.

This sanctuary is a really great place to visit. This guy apparently took exception to my approach and paused long enough to issue a challenge.
Noise, energy, movement: these are some of the things that one would expect from an American parade. I came upon a town that was holding such a parade, the first since COVID hit. However, as three pageant women waited on a vintage car to enter the parade line, everything was unusually still, almost frozen in time. My intent was to capture the emotion between expectation and calm to provide a hypnotic sense of tension. These women are framed with two vehicles, the truck symbolizing their journey ahead and the camper representing shared adventure, friendship, and our social nature. Copyright 2022 Gwen Julia
