There is a Dental Assisting program at www.nait.ca and one of the things the student learn how to do is take bitewing xrays. This shows some screen captures of an interactive simulation that uses streaming video and interactive illustrations to teach some of the hard-to-explain aspects of the procedure.

i suspect i should not have swallowed those scrabble letters, but if I didn't take L, M and E my opponent was about to play lemonaide on a triple word score!

The picture on the slide is that of a very interesting brain xray.

unfortunately, a tough week is made even tougher with the news that eric has pneumonia. luckily, he appears to be responding well to treatment; supposedly, if you compare the x-ray on the left to the one on the right, you will notice less white haziness, which means less mucous. it's hard for me to see the difference, but the nicu staff all claimed that the x-ray on the right looks substantially better than the one on the left.

This setup consists of a HD-S (high speed green) phosphor screen, and a 90kV, 15 milliamp real X-ray tube with a 1.5 amp 12 volt hot cathode.
I took the photo running the tube at 60kV and around 2 milliamps.
The exposure took 30 seconds, and the green phosphor shadow was post-processed to turn it into the more recognisable negative cyan X-ray transparency.
I use an old 20D camera because X-rays DO in fact damage CCD's as I found an increasing number of hot pixels on my new camera when I first started making X-ray images.
This is taken one week after crashing on my mountain bike. The bones seem to be in a good position for healing. Two more weeks before the fracture consolidates

The little dude gave us a New Year's present, in his own distinct fashion. On December 29th he swallowed a metallic ball from a magnetic constructor that he has been playing with for well over a year. "Gimme magnetic stick to pull them out", he said. Well, that sucked, we thought. Having watched an ER episode in which a little boy has a very hard time after he swallowed a bunch of magnetic balls, we took him to the urgent care right away, when they took this X-ray.
"Oh, look! There are two of them!", said the technichian looking at the screen.
Shit.
Fortunately for everyone, the balls weren't magietic, and the doctor said that these things were probably the least harmful to swallow. They will pass in several days, he said. You just have to put on your rubber gloves and go through his, well, poop. To make sure, he said. If they aren't out in a week, come back.
So, being a diligen father, I put on my gloves that I didn't have, and waded through the dude's night vase every night. Result? The shot at hand.
And the fact that my dad refers to the Little Dude now only as "The Iron Man".
May the new year bring you something better than the last one.
So I think I'll finish this project at last. I debated with myself a lot whether I should start a brand new one or just stick to the old one, and decided to do the latter.

The small item in my cheak is the metal file. A 3mm metal file from a root canal. This tooth had a sliver of metal stuck in it for a year. Two root canals, an apicoectomy. Thousands spent and now it has to be pulled. I thought it made a good picture. Four years later and the tooth is still messed up. An implant is the next step. Funny how one tooth will end up costing me thousands. Nothing more painful then a hurting tooth. Tooth pulled April 28, 2016. Another 350 wasted. More like 5 years later pulled. I hate the fucking dentist!! The material used to fill the tooth looks like it has started to float up into my sinus now. Looks pretty strange.
The strange thing in the sinus is there for good. The Dr could not remove it. Not from lack of trying. I was awake the whole time too. I felt like slapping a lot of people.
The doctor failed to tell me I had a hole in my sinus, after the tooth was gone. I find out a week later.
