Steel wool can do some awesome things.

These jumpers are called Fish 'N' Chip jumpers, because African babies were being sent home from hospital wrapped in newspaper (like a fish & chip parcel). A young girl in Auckland, NZ, decided to make suitable clothing for these babies and had a goal of collecting 1000 jumpers. I did my bit and made these two from a pattern supplied to me. They were to be made in darkish colours (for obvious reasons) and this pattern design allows the jumpers to be worn for a few years!

VINYA is a very chunky yarn plied form 32 individual strands of incredibly high quality merino wool. The spinning was done for us by a family mill in Japan. We do the dyework ourselves in Northern California.

Here's what we say about it on our website (www.artfibers.com):

100% fine merino wool

12 stitches X 17 rows = 4"/10cm on US #11 needles

1.00 yards per gram

69.00 yards required for one square foot (knit to gauge in stockinette)

This chunky yarn is ideal for pattern stitches. Its distictive texture as a fabric is very reminiscent of basketry, the kind made from sturdy but pliable vines. Hence the name, VINYA, Catalan for vineyard, where vines assume any form that you can imagine, and also nourish the imagination.

VINYA is custom plied for us from 32 individual threads of extremely fine merino wool. As we dye them the threads fuse into a supple mega-strand, incredibly cushiony and resilient.

Price per yard dyed: $0.15

Price per yard undyed: $0.13

Artfibers sells all of its yarns by the yard, on cones. buy as much or as little as you actually need. To purchase, just send an email to yarn@artfibers.com. We'll send you an invoice, you can pay online. Easy!

my new favorite winter colorway: mint, crimson, electric blue, and white.

Gorgeous BFL(wool)/Silk fibre I spun. Wonderful to work with and I'm reasonably happy with the result. I'm more consistant now than when I did this but I don't mind the varied look.
