Trees are people too, only too slow for us to witness their writhings. -- from a poem by Russ Allison Loar.

We shot this on the first day of the year, at the same time "After the Party" was shot. It's taken me a while to figure out what to do with the image. It's a good example of what happens when you don't have a clear concept in mind. In such a case, it's much harder to create an image with a clear message and story if I don't have a good idea of the outcome I want when I'm shooting. Still, it was too pretty not to use, and I hoped to at least capture and pass on some of the winter bleakness that I felt when editing this photo.

A single tree stands tall by the roadside in Niittykumpu, Espoo, Finland. Stripped bare for the winter, holding space between the traffic and the fields. Spring will come, but for now, the cold remains.
On the snowy hill above Frensham Little Pond - burnt trees sticking out through the snow. At sunset.

Winter longing, falling free
