This fake, plastic fruit at our office often tricks people into grabbing it, expecting the real thing. Alas, no satisfaction for you!
Caribbean Pirates’, 2001-05. Performance, video, installation, colour photographs.
Paul McCarthy is known for his raw, visceral work. McCarthy's work often involves what looks like fecal matter, blood and mucus. He believes we're taught to be disgusted by ourbodily fluids. He sees our disgust as related to a fear of death. His use of body fluids is contrasted with the antiseptic fixation on hygiene that he ascribes to Walt Disney whom he sees as the ultra-right-wing creator of Disneyland. The project Caribbean Pirates’ is inspired by one of Disneyland’s most popular attractions – Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s this world of innocence in entertainment industry which meets the eye, only it’s not innocent any more. Caribbean Pirates’ deals with brutality, sexual perversity and degradation. Pirates (and soldiers?) rape, torture and plunder out of sight of the constructed, civilized society we believe we are. The amount of blood and the focus on brutality and violence draws endless parallels to the political world scene. Paul McCarthy's pirates, sows and filthy puppets are a parodic comment on art, film - and in a wider sense on empire-building in old as well as present day history.
The installation is almost unbearable, especially the videos. You have to keep in mind that it’s all mayonnaise and Heinz ketchup.
If you can take it and stay on to watch it, you’ll see the humour, black and grotesque admittedly, but still humour. Still, this show may be hard to deal with even when you muster all your intellectual and analytic skills and reminding yourself of Heinz ketchup.

A quick coffee chat at Revolver is one of Vancouver/Gastown’s tech scene’s favorite things to do. No idea why, it’s not like their coffee is fantasti–oh wait, yes it is. You should go here.

I nearly missed doing a photo for Ashley this week, the dreary damp days haven't been an incentive and I knew the shutter speed would be too low for action and I had no inspiration for an indoor shot. But this morning the sun was trying hard to get through the clouds so we went to the park with Wubba. Ashley loves it but as with all toys just wants to lay down and rip it apart. I really will have to find a 'thrower' to get these action shots, continually getting up and down is soooo hard for my old joints, *smile*
At Hamilton Island Yacht Club, Whitsundays, Queensland.
With over 90 islands stretching from Bowen in the north to the Repulse Islands in the south, the Whitsunday group is part of Australia’s largest offshore island chain, known as the Cumberland group. All the islands and their surrounding waters (collectively known as 'the Whitsundays') have international protection as part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. In addition, some islands have been declared national parks by the Queensland Government.

This pencil has spent many years in the pencil pot on the window sill in the sunlight.
The idea that the Russian Cosmonauts used pencils in their space programme is a myth, they used specially pressurised pens as did the American Astronauts.
You just have to check out who walked here before you and that is just what she's doing here.
We are having beautiful but pretty warm weather, so difficult to get a shot because she's not very active in the heat :) But sniffing is always possible.

[32/52] | returning to serralves...
i absolutely love serralves on sundays' mornings... it's a beautiful place with fabulous and peaceful gardens full of quiet and calm spots where you can just sit, read or listen to music or the birds and other animals...
this day i took two cameras: the nikon d90 (you can see more photos from this day in the serralves set) and the rolleiflex...
since i (still...) don't have a scanner i had this on film and i took a picture of it with the d90 against my imac bright all blank desktop acting as a light table... there is some noise (you can see the dots) so i will try to post a better version of this latter...
wish you all a fabulous week............... see you!

This was fun. Got to use my fancy tripod in some new ways for once and play around with some records. Colored vinyl is fun to look and and listen to. CCWelcome
Over the weekend, we were at Fresno, California (200 miles away from home) watching Lain and her team participate in the Post Season USTA Section Championships.
Lain was recruited to play with the high school summer league back in June. All summer, they played against various teams throughout the bay area. They ended up undefeated (collectively, they played over 300 matches and lost less than 99 games - I do not have the official stats). Because of this awesome feat, the team participated in the post season Section Championships where they played against the best teams in their division. It's kinda cool watching twelve year old Lain play with and against 14-17 year old kids. They all smack these balls with power, strategy, and conviction! They ended up getting second place in the championships!
With that said, it has been a busy week and didn't make the time to work on an actual multiple exposure shot (I did one for last year's 52 Week - does that count?) ;)
This is a (handheld) 5 exposure HDR of the main tennis court at the Copper River Country Club in Fresno, CA. In a way, this is kind of like a multiple exposure photograph right? :p
The tournament was held in an upscale country club/neighborhood. Driving towards the country club, we were presented with gorgeous mansions. I am surprised that they didn't kick me out!
The last few days been warm and sunny; now we have a bit of late-season snow. These Snow Drops will be just fine even if it does accumulate.
I am not sure if I am happier to see spring flowers or snow. Spring is wonderful, but so is snow.

Description:
Quite often we 'dream' about certain abstract happenings, happenings which are beyond the "norms" that bind us in 'reality'. We may be flying in our dreams just to wake up to the disappointing 'reality' that we cannot fly. But this world as we know it...is it "real" or are we really 'living' when we sleep? Are flowers really beautiful?... Does gravity exist? Is fire really "fire?" or are we just perceiving it wrong? It seems we are stuck in a paradox.
A great man once said...
"Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one"
- Albert Einstein
I took my mate Mary and Charlie for a long walk today out on Tealham moor...it was grey and windy...lots of ball play and chasing about. Later we sat in Mary's magical garden drinking tea and the sun returned...it was hot and sheltered from the wind..not a cloud in the sky. Charlie checked out every nook and cranny, found and ate the cat food, and then rolled over at Mary's feet...he got a good old rub all over...but especially behind the ears...One very happy little dog!

The POOP sign arrived! I was a little confused and forgot that I bought it to warn people about the doggie doos and mistook it for a command.
The good news, the tomatoes are enormous.
The bad news, they taste a little funny.

When you open that door you'll find in addition to the interior of a car, history, and enjoy those times. Best of all, still attracting attention.

This weeks 52 Weeks theme is "Against the Light / Flare"..
I had to get up a bit earlier than normal this morning as I had to attend a 7:30am Board Meeting, and as I got ready to leave the house I noticed the light outside - I walked out on my balcony to see this gorgeous sunrise over the harbour.
I still had my macro lens on the camera from yesterday, but as I was already running late - and I was scared the light would change I just quickly fired off a few frames with the macro...
Yesterday, Lewis was working on his school project .... all done and a good job done! A bit of a mess but that was expected ~ all back to normal now!!

Sometimes luck and good timing comes to you and this morning I think capturing this photo certainly was a bit of luck. I went out looking for something entirely different and this is what I found. I was very lucky that I put the 55-300 mm lens on the camera before I went out as well. This hawk would have been long gone if I'd had to have gone back inside and changed lenses.
Thanks everyone for your kind comments/faves. I do appreciate them all.

I met up with a model who also somewhat of a nerd and gamer, so we thought it would be fun to do a gamer girl oriented shoot. The owner of the local arcade, 1984, was happy to let us shoot inside, which was awesome.

On Saturday, my husband and I took a spur-of-the-moment trip to Door County hoping to catch a few metrors from the Perseid peak a few nights before.
Knowing we would want to be out late, we sought out a place to stay (yeah, we've slept in our Highlander)! A friend introduced us to Pam and Dave Ely and they welcomed us into their beautiful DC home! This gave us the opportunity to scout locations in the afternoon, set up for a few hours Satuday night, and swim like normal tourists on Sunday!
Unfortunately...the moon did not set until 2:20am and while I was game to stay out all night, my poor hubby was just wiped. I was amazed at the amount of light thrown out by the setting moon...the clouds were glowing, the beach lit up like dusk, and the sky was almost daytime blue!!
I took over 350 images (which included the north star) and I DID see about 9 meteors. Unfortunately, they were so faint within the images it's like trying to find Waldo to see them. The camera DID capture the flash of a satellite flare (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_flare). This shot is about 60 images which include the satellite. You can see the line of travel and then the brightness as the satellite reflects the sun's lite back to earth.
We most certainly want to go back--to swim at our secret beach, to shoot stars, and of course, to visit our friends Pam and Dave!
