Summer Movies

Nothing like the early weeks of May as the Summer Movie Season kicks off. That means "BLOCKBUSTERS"! This May looks like a good one with Iron Man kicking off this week and Indiana Jones later on. Not to mention that we get Dark Knight, Hancock, Wall E, Kung Fu Panda and more.

I know that with quick turnarounds on DVD releases and torrents, movies can be had at home for little or no cost. But, I'm a fan of a good movie experience. Nothing like big crowds, the smell of popcorn permeating the hallways and a the great picture and sounds.

As a youngster, we'd surely spend our summer days visiting some local theater be it the $1 show running B-grade 3D films, the Capitol Drive-In, and the upscale Winchester Century Domes.

It's a bit funny how things cycle. We have a couple of monster plexs nearby. Literally, 36 screens within 5 minutes of the house. But, we find ourselves heading to the Domes more and more. Smaller crowds but still a quality experience. I've been told that the Domes were very, very upscale in the 60s. It was considered far more than a casual drop in. People would get fancied up to go there and the candy was served from fancy platters and not just giant tubs.

It's not that way anymore but those theaters still maintain a bit of the ambiance. But, it'll change eventually because that property could easily be turned into 100 Plex if they wanted. Someone will realize that the are only running 6 screens and turn it into some extension of Santana Row.

In the meantime, we'll enjoy our popcorn. And Slurpees.

A new age for me starts now.

I searched for a digital reflex camera since month and yesterday I bought this baby :) - a Canon EOS 500D.

First I wanted to buy the 450D because there was a special bargain. But then I gave some thoughts to the future and decided to invest only 50 Euro more.

This week I was on the way to get some documents which I need for my apartment hunting.

On saturday evening I met Andrea, a Flickr friend, who visited Berlin. She wants to move to Berlin and so she was here to get an idea of the different districts of Berlin. She also do '365 days', so take a look at her stream ;-)

ICM or Intentional camera Movement is something new to me or is it, many a photograph I took years ago on an old zenith camera came out like this !!

Anyway I gave it a go and these are the results..

Some of you may remember my shot from week 30 when we were house sitting.

While he wasn't in the shot, he is the dog that everyone aside from Rigby, was looking at out of frame.

Funnily enough, Rigby was really the only one that paid any attention to the decrepit old dog.

Dino was the reason that we were house-sitting that week. His owner feared that he may die in her absence, so she opted out of boarding.

He was fine with us during that week. Came on the occasional walk with us, ate his food no problem.

Last week he lost the use of his legs entirely. He couldn't move at all. His owner decided that this was the best course of action for her elderly Yorkie. We will be holding a memorial for him sometime in the coming weeks.

Rest In Peace Dino, you will be missed by many.

Today is week 40 and no signs of baby yet?

Last two times the babies waited until week 42 to come in to the world, but we hope not this time. This are hoping that this weekend the magic will happen!!!!!

Excuse the hair, it was humid this morning ;) This is pregnant me, at 17 weeks, 3 days. Yay for pregnancy shorts... so comfy!

#3 - I was challenged by Courtney Wright for the International Black & White Challenge

This weekend scholars took part in "Get Your Feet Wet," a single class that allows them to try out a subject they have little experience in. Topics they could choose from included Sushi Making, Shibori Tie-Dye, and Oreo Stacking.

A little early this week but today at the NDHQ concourse, a frank discussion on mental health was conducted. The panelists discussed mental health issues from a leadership and personal points of view. Let's end the stigma surrounding mental health issues and make mental health as important as physical health.

I was completely unprepared for how emotionally taxing potty training has been. It’s the first time I have no control over Olive’s success or actions. And it’s the first time we’ve experienced failure together.

I almost wish that potty training was difficult right from the get-go because her early success left me caught off balance for the challenges to come. If I had to use one word to sum up the root of all of our potty problems, it would be poop.

The fact that Olive would have a hard time with this part of potty training wasn’t a complete surprise. Earlier in the year, she pooped in both the shower and the tub in the same week and then refused to take a bath or shower for almost a month. And during that month she suffered a bout of constipation, so I’ve seen her battle her body before.

But this time was much worse and for much longer. I can’t tell you how many tears have been shed over poop. Watching Olive go through this and work her way through fear and control issues has been the hardest thing I’ve done as a parent.

All I can do is be there for her, talk her through it and help her with her diet as much as I can. She can’t articulate what the bigger issues are so all we hear from her is a sad “I don’t want to.” It’s been heartbreaking.

We’ve tried everything to help her. We offered her diapers but she refused. We told her it was okay to go in her pull up at nap or bed time but she never did. We even gave her tons of naked time hoping that she would find a little private spot to do her business.

Things are slowly, incrementally improving. Some days it feels like we’ve rounded a corner and other days feel as bleak as the first. The hard part is not knowing when it will get better. It might be a slow process like it is for many. Or she could, in a typical fashion, decide to stop fighting it and everything will fall into place.

There have been some big wins for her. She’s gone a month at school wearing just trainers and only had one accident and that was directly related to poop. And she wakes up dry from 85% of her naps now.

Potty training has brought on a lot of fears that I am going to have to try my best not to get the better of us as I raise her. She’s started biting her nails, a definite reaction to stress. This makes a pattern for her, as she started (and has since stopped) twirling her hair into knots when she started preschool.

I see her chewing away at her nails and I think of her at six when a friend excludes her on the playground. And at nine when the popular girls aren’t nice to her. I see her at 12 when the boy she likes doesn’t like her back. I see her stressing over an exam. Worried about a presentation. In knots over early acceptance.

Her personality is really beginning to crystallize. I hear often that she’s very laid back but she’s also watchful and observant. She’s going to be a sensitive child. Already loud noises bother her. She still watches almost no television because even the relative calm chaos of Sesame Street disturbs her.

But. She’s also joyful. Quick to laugh and quick to make conversation with her classmates. She likes to be silly and make up silly songs and silly words. She tackles challenges with bravery.

Her teachers, always such great coaches to the parents too, have been quick to remind me through this ordeal not to paint her into a corner. That labeling her as sensitive or nervous or anxious will only mold her forming personality.

So we’ve stopped talking about it unless she brings it up. She’s started to announce to me in the car that she’s chewing her nails and I acknowledge her but I don’t probe on why she’s doing it. There’s no lecture to give. I know from the hair twirling that she’ll stop doing it one day and we probably won’t even notice.

I’m trying to see all of this in a different light. It’s early preparation for bigger struggles and it’s taught me a lot about how to handle Olive and her feelings.

If you find yourself in the middle of potty training and you’re feeling emotional beyond the normal frustration. Shoot me a message. I get it. No one tells you all the other stuff that can come wrapped up in underwear and princess potty seats. I might not be able to offer you advice, but you’ll definitely have my sympathy.

This Weeks 52 Weeks Theme is "Waiting"..... of which I did quite a bit this week :-)

After a wonderful 3 week holiday in South Africa it was time to hit the long road home - 36 hours from when I left Johannesburg to eventually arriving back to my home in New Zealand...with a 18 hour transit stop in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia....

The main photo is the "waiting area" at the gates in Terminal C of the Kuala Lumpur airport.

Below is the international arrivals area at Oliver Tambo Airport in Johannesburg, and below that is some fantastic "waiting" seats at KL airport (with the impressive rainforest in the background)

I love the Aiport in KL - it is one of the few airports where I do not actually mind having to spend time in between flights, as they have a lot of the "little things" that travellers need ......Free WiFi, decent eateries, great shopping, very nice Transit Hotel, Transit Lounge for $50 for 2 hours etc....

Looking for adventure!

Oops - I missed Week 3. But hopefully that won't become a regular thing!
